Nah, raytracing (the meme that it is), hasn't proliferated enough into the gaming space. Which means that not only is it not implemented widely yet, it's still just a toe-dip into what's possible.
Just think of the difference between 360 games when the console just came out, compared to the shit they were doing with it at the end of its lifespan.
Unfortunately, raytracing will probably live or die based on console implementation, so unless it's adopted by the new consoles, it'll probably fall flat.

Don't get me wrong, raytracing is a hell of a meme and for now is pretty shit, but it's the best "next leap" in graphics we got.
Most likely it'll be pretty shit and gimmicky in this first iteration, but I think things should start to be pretty good looking after studios have some practice with it. Especially since it's "easy mode".
Just set up your materials, throw in your lights, and to quote a wise man, "it just works".

This is speaking from experience as a /3/ fag who's been doing this shit professionally for years.

It's technically less work but right now, with it not being the norm, it's actually more work because you still need proper lighting, SSR and whatever else you're using for when raytracing is disabled.

Graphics through semi-realistic art direction peaked back around 2005, give or take a year, and still looks good. The needless realism boom has been a downward slope that leaves every game looking awfully dated a couple years later.

I could see the next console gen use some wek implementation of raytracing at 30fps, they sale consoles based on gimmick like that even if it tanks the framerate, it's only image quality that matters for them.
But AMD has to get their shit together because right now it's only Nvidia that provides an easy to use library of tools to implement raytracing.

AO is okay if it's tuned right, but honestly it's just a band-aid for good lighting.
I've used it from time to time on stuff and it's pretty useful for boosing the detail of normal maps and stuff (especially if you're using lower res lamps/shadows), but it's pretty easy to go overboard with.

I think the future is gonna be about making the technology easier for talent to work with on a smaller budget.
Instead of having one game with 10,000 workers, they could have 100 games with 100 workers. Kinda like the old days.

That'll probably be what happens, then later on when the tech gets cheaper and better do another "Pro" version. Who knows though, maybe they've got some secret sauce now to upscale and use low samples or some shit. Intel has some good de-noising tools right now.

In any case, having it and having people exposed to it (even at shitty framerates) is better than not having it.
I think AMD coming out with a card is going to be one of those things that finally get things going. They always have a habit of making things cheaper, and early adopters will probably grab it.

Once again, I said it's a band-aid solution to bad lighting. If you know how to light a scene, then chances are you won't need it. If you bake your lighting, you won't need it. There are times however, where having AO is better than not having it. Notably, games with global illumination. You can only get places so dark and have so much contrast with GI, AO helps get those areas darker and provides contrast.
There's a lot more to making a good image than throwing shit at it and seeing what sticks.

All I was doing was giving a place where it can be used and why. Scenes with GI look washed out in games without something to darken places. Consoles can't handle having high shadow-map sizes, so AO is the quick and dirty solution right now to darken those places cheaply. It's bad form, but sometimes you can't just bake lighting into everything.

Most likely the post effects aren't on it because of the order shit is done in, or there's some fuckery going on with the raytracing, like not being able to isolate it or something.

I really hate that Capcom unleashed this on us, but it's more on devs for being shitters who do nothing but copy paste what's selling without working on good gameplay. Control isn't that bad, but the majority of them really are.

I don't know how vidyas are implementing raytracing, but if it's something like sending out rays into the room and having the information stored in a cache or something for a few frames or something (using some temporal filters over the top for denoising), then I could see why they'd opt not to do post effects on it. It'd probably look pretty fucky with the projector's video moving on top with the added effects since they'd be lagged behind.

Not to mention it's probably pretty hard to do post effects on raytraced results anyway. Since you're not using the same information that you would from regular vidya lighting. Reflections and stuff would be hard to use in a post result unless you specifically specify another layer just for reflections, but that'd mean more sampling/rendering. And things are already pushing it with how little samples these cards are putting out for barely serviceable framerates.

With raytracing, samples (rays) are sent out from the camera. They hit a spot in the scene, and depending on the parameters of the shader and other texture info (normal maps, roughness maps, etc.) send that information to the renderer as an output. Those rays also bounce off of the object, and hit other objects (indirect lighting). Which means you'll get colored objects transmitting their color onto nearby objects, and also lighting up areas around them based on the light that's interacting with the scene.
So it's geometry, but there's a bit more to it than that.

Honestly I think my description was a bit off in some places, but Disney of all things has a pretty simple and decent explanation of how raytracing works on Youtube.

I was asking about those raytraced reflections specifically, because a scene that's outside the frame doesn't have any post effects, but if the reflection itself is geometry and not just a 2D image, then post effects can maybe be applied to it, does that make sense?

Yeah I don't know about games, but the way you'd do it in regular 3d renders is to isolate different channels so you can do post work on them. I'll be honest I haven't really messed around with projections, but I'll do my best to explain probably how it's done, though it may be wrong.
So you've got stuff like diffuse/albedo, reflections/specular/glossy, emissions, transmissions, and other stuff. Then you'd also have a pass that isolates your different objects with different colors for masking (kind of like a green screen, but everything is a different color that you could pick from).
So for the projector projecting on the wall, you'd probably just use the emission pass (and maybe the color pass). Then it should be pretty easy to isolate it and apply post effects onto it.
Reflections are weird though, and would be kind of hard to isolate, because you're not just reflecting the projector, you're reflecting everything in the room. It's pretty hard to isolate reflected objects, because shit like the Object/Material ID passes (the color green screen thing) don't get reflected. So you'd have to do a lot of weird workarounds to get just what you want out of it. So it's easier just to not do it and process the rest of the image instead.

Again, I haven't really fucked around with projected images/light textures so that could be wrong, and I don't know how video games do it or even if they use the different passes.

Yeah Gears of War / Xbox360 caused this because Xbox controller always been a bad design and not good for shooters. RE4 was really tame even though it was designed for the Gamecube controller and had low FoV. Gears of War and all these other retarded over-the-shoulder games have huge FoV and still can't be assed to center the character on the screen.

Claustrophobic FoV = Dynamic over-the-shoulder (swaps shoulder depending where you aim).
Little/No Restrictions = Center/Dynamic camera.

If you want to create compositions with light, make sure the player can't control the camera. This, like all of this. The combat is so fucking satisfying and I haven't even gotten flight yet. Sprinting around and ripping parts of the walls out to batter my enemies with and then using their broken shattered bodies to finish their friends. Or bowling them over with a desk and while they're reeling from the attack I sprint up and shotgun them with a wall of rocks from the shield ability. This games combat gets my dick hard, and as someone who plays a lot of shooters, both third person and first, nothing has come really close to it lately.

You can have a clear shot at the enemy, but your gravity gun will hit a wall because for some reason your character is holding the object on the right side of the screen instead of in front of self. Go through your folder and ask yourself "will this picture still look good if I turn the camera 90 degrees to the right/left". So far the answer is no for every one of your bullshots. It only looks good when you pick the right camera angle, during gameplay it looks like shit.

Literally never had this problem, in fact in most cases it feels like the object you're hurling will ignore parts of the terrain to hit the intended target. It feels like it will through over small walls or through grates when it shouldn't just to hit what you're aiming at. Feels a little cheap I guess, but it's satisfying as fuck to use.

Majority of the time the object you're throwing should never get near you. You flick stuff in front of you/beside you directly at the target, the second it levitates off the ground you can launch it from where the ITEM is, not where you are.

You can tell this because it is far more detailed than the rest of the objects in the room in the reflection, when in reality it should have the same sample count as the rest of the room.

It's a neat trick, but it's just a trick, and it's a trick that slows down the entire rendering pipeline because the RT cores on the RTX cards aren't actually asynchronous, they're concurrent (both run on the GPU at the same time, but concurrent running stalls the rendering pipeline every sync while asynchronous execution is truly parallel)
