She's... fine. She's a bit of an angsty teenager but she isn't an unlikeable cold-hearted cunt like people say she is. There's a good plot reason why all the characters in XIII are on the edge and that's because they're in a shitty no-win situation.
I know a lot of people simply can't stand controlling characters that are imperfect, un-heroic, or maybe even unlikeable, but I'd argue those are more interesting.
That said she's totally awful in the sequels, monologuing into distance about random bullshit.

XIII is a painful experience, but you will need to play it if you want to understand the other games. The combat is one of the best turn based combats ever made, but in the beginning is extremely barebones, and the game hold options hostage until literally 80% of it's playtrough. The biggest problem though is how autistically made the story is. It's like they crafted it in a way you could never understand the world, everytime you start to understand something they jump to something else as to left the feeling of confusion hanging till the end. It is the one case where being spoiled actually makes something more enjoyable, and the story actually gets good in the second playtrough.

XIII-2 is how XIII should have been. The combat is fully open from the beginning, it's extremely non-linear, and give opportunity for exploration. It is also the best time heist game around. The story pays a lot of homage to the first though, and the gameplay already assumes you are familiarized, so you can't just jump to this.

Lightning Returns is a fun action-RPG game with a lot of customization options. It's way more video gamey than the others, and the story suffers from this, but is also way more pleasant to play.

Come on, I have a terrible PC and I can play it with no problems.

The worst part of it though, is how it doesn't accept DirecInput controls configuration and neither X360ce, and without an original Xbox controller the buttons get messy. I played with keyboard and mouse until I discovered that Xoutput can solve the deal.

I'm replaying XIII right now and it's not confusing at all. They basically spell it out for you. Gods want to suicide-by-cop killing enough souls in the process to have Maker-senpai notice them and the game is about how some ragtag retards respond to being made into tools of suicidal gods. You learn this before you even hit Gran Pulse and the rest is padding.

If anything XIII-2 is confusing because any time it tries to talk about how ditzy Etro fucked shit up and let Chaos into the world saving the original party they make it all metaphorical and cryptic, probably to avoid having Barthandelus explains the plot moment from the first game.

But, for a first timer, it is confusing as hell. The Purge, F'alcie, L'cie, Cocoon, the world below, if somebody sat with you and explained all that lore shit before you touched the controller the story wouldn't be so confusing. In a replay you already understand this, so there is no problem anymore.
