consoles don't seem to be as popular as they used to be. the industry seems to be rapidly changing. is it really a good idea?

Pass. Console Wars are bad enough as it is. Besides, Sega is doing really well. I think they found a cozy spot and should keep at it.

What would even be the point? Third parties can't even cook up enough games to make the current consoles worth it. None of the current consoles have more than five noteworthy exclusives. Adding another one on top of that would only exacerbate things

Depends on what is the kind of the device. The Switch isn't as powerful as anything in this generation but the ways you can use it alone made the thing a huge success. Maybe Sega can start with a portable gaming device similar to that approach while releasing games that people care about on it (Yakuza Portable, a new GOOD Sonic, remasters and ports of games that aren't available for any other recent platform)

also this. considering it would take 5 years just to get the console out the door (pre-development, design, manufacturing, etc etc) - by the time it was on store shelves, there's a very good chance that consoles over-all will be in the decline and people will be less willing to risk their money on a non-proven brand.

Are you even being serious? Sega only had 1 successful console - with 2 addons (32x/CD). The next 2 flopped and they never tried again.

Actually, I take that back. I forgot Game Gear. I had one of those. Their color portable. I'm not sure how it did it sales, but I enjoyed mine.

A Sega that was seriously pushing into the hardware market would result in a golden age of quality games from the company for a few years before it flops and sinks the company. Probably worth it, but would be very depressing.
