If you knew anything about the dev process behind the first game, you would know the directer had this intention. It may be the reason why the wiimake doesn't have Klonoa talking as much.

I'm probably the only one who thinks Klonoa 2 is sadder than Klonoa 1. Klonoa 1 has two moments that are gut punchers, that being the death of Grandpa and the very end. But Klonoa 2 has more of a slow burn and more well paced sadness to it. You find more about Lolo and her sadness which is very relatable, and also the sadness of the Pirate antagonist. Then finally there's the entire Ruins of Sadness which has such a melancholy atmosphere that also dredges up the past with its music and sound design. And while we all knew how the ending was inevitably going to happen, Lolo's reaction to it was pretty good because that's exactly how people who are good friends who are leaving each other would react.

The Wii 'remake' was awful.

It was a complete downgrade in artstyle compared to the original, particularly with character models (Laphise/Hewpoe especially). They also remade the CGI cutscenes despite ending up PAINFULLY inferior to the originals. It was the laziest, ugliest remake I've ever seen. Kinda crazy considering the original came out in the mid fucking 90s.

As far as back then goes? One of the reasons Klonoa failed was because it was the first console gen all about 3D gaming. So you needed to either go 3D or flop. The only reason games like Megaman X4 or Castlevania Symphony of the Night survived that gen is because they were established beloved franchises with fans already more than happy to buy more games from such series (also the same franchises offered 3D attempts like Castlevania 64 or Megaman Legends).

Let me guess your most recent Kingdom Hearts game is DREAM Drop Distance and that's why you associate Sora with Klonoa? About the only similarity I see between the series is the whole world traveling theme, but Klonoa does it against his will while Sora intentionally uses a vehicle to reach new worlds.

There's also the whole sub-plot from Klonoa 2 about manufacturing fake rings which Kingdom Hearts also did with the keyblade. However Klonoa 2 had the spine to show you what happens as a punishment when you use a fake ring (you mutate into a hideous abomination).

I cant remember the exact number but they expected like a million or some insane amount of sales for Klonoa 2 and it only had over a hundred thousand something which is hilarious and kinda surprising it even sold over one copy with how piss poor the marketing was in comparison to Ratchet, Sly, Jak and many other characters doing the PS2 era

So what made this game different from other platformers?
What makes this game worth it?

Klonoa dared to 2./5D during the golden age of 3D platforming, and perfecting it in the process.
It's worth it for the music and story. Dem endings.

Gameplay wise it's more of a puzzle platformer franchise. The puzzles are very light mind you, but it's not just about navigating platforms and enemies.
The games also have some surprisingly "dark" stories for how cute the characters are. I don't want to oversell it like some people do when talking about Kirby final bosses, but it's a nice change of pace from similar games where things always look really happy and nice except for the spooky ghost levels or hell light Bowser's castles.
