Partly, I think it is well agreed that 9 was the last good one,
9 came out good because they took a back to basics approach and were trying hard to bank on 2-3 nostalgia (because of the success street fighter 4 had at that time banking on street fighter 2 nostalgia).
The "realistic" art direction and character design the series took afterwards with X and 11 damaged the series, to the point it doesn't feel like the "mortal kombat" anymore. For example, if you take a screenshot of every mortal kombat and put them next to each other, X and 11 look like they are from completely different games.
The worst were those alternate classic costumes in MKX that really looked out of place compared to the default ones, when the classic character designs don't fit the game anymore you know you fucked up in the art department.
The story mode trying to take itself seriously (and forgeting it's tongue-in-cheek origins) and the cringy new characters didn't help either.

I think the MKX story killed my hype for MK11 and now I'm not sure how to feel after the latters story. I'm not sure if I want to see what happens next.
All I really care about now is what happens with Sub-Zero, Smoke and Noob Saibot and knowing NRS, it's going to be extremely underwhelming

I get the feeling that either they got tired of MK and ended it with a reset so they could do whatever they wanted with the story whenever they got back to it, or they slapped MK11's plot together becase fans didn't like the direction MKX took the story in as much as they'd hoped.

According to Nightwolf's pre-fight dialogue, Dark Raiden killed every revenant that doesn't appear in MK11's story. As for Noob, they pretty much dismissed the fact that he was nowhere to be seen for twenty years, and outside of his ending, Sub-Zero seems to absolutely hate his brother.

they've pretty much gone back to the 3D era dark ages. Mostly weak or awful new characters, weird stage and character gimmicks, and the original cast being discarded or badly redesigned. At this point I'm just waiting for the next MK9 style reboot.

I didn't like MK11's story, but I always hated the revenant stuff, especially since half of them ended up dying again offscreen. The only revenant that somewhat mattered to the story was Liu Kang, but like Shinnok, he only really mattered right at the beginning and right at the end.

I kind of agree, but he was still one of the few newcomers after the reboot that I took a liking to. It bothered me more that present Erron only made about two appearances and never said anything, and that Sub-Zero was the only veteran hero whose past self wasn't pulled forward.

tfw I followed mortal kombat 11 since the gameplay reveal event and thought it looked fucking awesome. watched all the character streams. then finally got to play the beta. I was fucking terrible at it and got my ass beat. continued to follow till it released and finally got to play it. I was just awful and couldn't into the game even though i love fighting games. Then all the drama started about no sexy characters and the shitty crypt. eventually got it completely refunded. Hate myself for not getting gud but all the other shit offsets it

They couldn't really play up his race in the earlier games without it being unwelcome, so they had to get some mileage out of him being in the military. However, anyone aware could still see what they were going for with his design - a Cool Black Guy™ (see a certain alt of his in Deadly Alliance and his character in MK9 onward). I'm honestly not surprised at all that he got a woke ending in MK11, given the political climate these days and the longstanding ambitions of the character, and NRS will probably continue to milk him for his melanin in future games.
