QC did a few things right. They didn't allow for configs that killed the aesthetic of the game, the sound is decent I suppose, and the art direction was pretty good from what I could tell. However, the niche following that AFPS has would be supporting this way more had it been pulled off correctly. You don't make a niche genre/shooter exclusive to your new storefront. You put it out there so more people can see/'experience it.
As far as the competitive/esports scene goes, you can pay out as much money as you'd like to "get people interested", or "invested" but you will never build a following as strong as a genuine, grass roots competitive community who will build it up for you. Grassroots competitive community will get you farther.

Why didn't they go all out and put in crazy skill-based movement abilities that change how the game is played instead of "go invisible" and "self heal"? You could even put an AWP in the game for some characters so they can quickscope people while they're rocketjumping through the air. There's nearly limitless potential for creativity here. And add abilities and waifus to the mix and you have huge amounts of potential.

No, in UT's case gears happened and the unreal engine altogether. It became the steam of their creations. They became too satisfied and complacent and lost their drive and time.

i play this game on an i5-3570k, 8gb ram, with a radeon rx580 8gb and before that i had an msi hd7870 with 2gb and i never had a problem running the game.

The only problem the game suffers is a dwindling player base due to the huge skill gap between newcomers and experienced players and even after newcomers git gud they meet an even bigger skillgap between experienced players and the oldfarts proplayers that have been playing since q3 and even they then have a good skillgap with the pro players.

I initially downloaded this game a year ago because I'm a quake fag and I was pretty excited when I first heard of it. But the CHAMPION / HERO system really turned me down. Also, the game ran with piss poor performance on my 2060, often dipping below 60. It's a shame to see that the current state is the same as it was a year ago.

What personally bothers me about quake is the nonexistent tutorials.
It's like you drop into a shooter in which gunplay doesnt even matter that much and the only thing the tutorial teaches is you is how to go and fuck yourself.
Quake is just full of mechanics you have to learn before you can even think about playing the game. Sometimes you have to spend days just memorizing the maps and routes to strafejump through them before you're even capable of playing the game.
It's not even much about the skillgap, atleast when it comes down to aim etc.
If i play starcraft 2 on the other hand i can simply play the singleplayercampaign that teaches me everything and imediatly join into pvp, improve and get better.
Quake feels like wasting days and weeks of time not being able to play before you can think about playing

to be honest i dont know why they didnt port the movement tutorials from quake live or at least did something similar. Just learning strafe jumping, long jumping, rocket jumping and plasma riding/jumping with a tutorial and then what weapons work better in each situation would really help newbies out. Add a couple practice maps or better yet, checkpoint runs on the existing competitive maps with time records and shit to practice the different skills and you are done.

There hasn't been a good enough AFPS in year's, UT4/QC had many issues, QC engine is a hot mess and UT4 never got finished (still got like 300h in the pre alpha) and all minor AFPS will not get enough track to revive the genre, because most AFPS players are old and don't even play videogames anymore, the ones that still play are stuck in their old games, why would someone play UT4 when he has UT2K4 that %500 more content and polish? I sure tried, in the end I had to go back to UT2K4 because Epic abandoned UT4 without giving it a fair chance, people want AFPS but players are spread thought multipe games and private servers, if your game doesn't get big enough to get the attention of new players, is not the responsibility of old players to drop their games to go to a inferior product

-the worst launch time period ever , summer 2017 , they competed against the rise of the BR genre
-Early access fuckery , the game was not polished enough after the closed beta , they should have pushed the release one year away , this would have allowed more time to fix the performance and the many bugs .
-they needed to attract the younger audience more , the artstyle should have been like fortnite.

Literally no one is interested in Q3 with actual graphics which is essentially what QC is. QC actually has more of an edgy, grimdark 90s aesthetic than Q3 did, which is just so dumb. People want beautiful, bright, clearly legible games, not everything washed in shadows and space engineer girls from a 80s sci fi novel.

Fortnite artstyle is too childish though, it puts off the older audience. The ideal is somewhere in between, like the rest of the hero shooter genre uses.

Arena fps just need to be made fun again, not muh super serious esports. Back when arena shooters were big there were still loads of shitters playing them. People just had fun with custom servers, silliness and fun game modes.
Now all of that has been pushed out because they just want to make the game entirely around 'pros' and obviously that's not 95% of players.

Remember that the high skill esports scene for Quake just organically came out of the games being fun, Quake was never some deliberate attempt to make the ultimate esport.

The problem with arena shooters like Reflex and Toxic isn't that people don't want to play them, they're just victims of being dead games. There was never that rush of players that provided a decent atmosphere to play and learn the game in, so even if you're interested there's just no reason. Look at classic wow - vanilla servers were around for ages before nostalrius, but the best of them only ended up with 2000 players for a month or two before dropping off to 400 and even lower numbers. It wasn't until nost that there was something with a good enough marketing campaign to draw the player base needed to be sustainable, even with the server not even being that much better than something like scriptcraft. A big name like Epic releasing a legitimate arena shooter that there's a reason to play over Quake Live would 100% be successful.

I tried Toxic but it wasn't a good game, felt more like COD than an arena shooter.
