Yeah. The series takes a noticeable nosedive in production values after X4, but the games are still enjoyable for the most part. Do not play X7 or X8 on hard mode. It's a complete waste of time and offers nothing significant to the experience.

All of the games are fun except X7. Even X3 and X5 are fun. That one game is legendarily awful for a reason. You're in for a good time besides that game.

X8 on Hard is legit. Game overs actually mean something and you have to use the character switching mechanic to mitigate the insane damage output. It very much changes the game, and to my taste I think it's the most satisfying challenge in the X series. Can't speak for X7, one playthrough of that shitheap was enough for me.
