Alright pals, buckle up. Literal boomer here to tell you about this amazing series.
This series was a never-ending celebration of video games in general. 1996 the industry was just full steam party and celebration.
The whole series just screams "soul", and it was a huge success. The opening song of the first game blew all of Japan away at the time. Concerts and festivals were held around this song alone.
The amount of production value in each game was insane. Character animations in portraits, their mouths moving as they talk, the amount of interaction, all of that was unheard of for the genre at the time.
The sequel of the 96 hit, solidified all the foundations on this good versus evil plot with an amazing cast and one of the greatest MCs of the genre.
SEGA was just burning cash on the series and it showed. The production value was amazing for the time.
Fuck why does Sega make such good protagonists? They only make badasses that are also extremely likeable.
I really hope Johnny Yong Bosch voices him in the dub.
Matthew Brown
>shitty generic JRPG anime game series #20134 You aren't no boomer, zoomer.
Nolan Thompson
I find it strange how one of the biggest series in Japan never got any localizations during its peak
James Jackson
I don't like those kubotite designs at all.
Ayden Williams
Although the party peaked much a bit earlier, the last oorah of that peak was Sakura Taisen 3.
People say this game is the best game in the series, but the context is just so important. If you play Sakura Wars 3 you can truly feel the unadulterated, pure passion they felt over video games at the time.
You can melt over how much cash they plowed through, the production value, and the amount of love the game had in it. If there's a definition of "Soulful", Sakura Wars 3 was right next to it.
It showed. Multiple disks, top notch animation. The opening is still hailed as one of the top openings of all time. Any top x openings will mention Sakura Wars 3's opening for sure.
Sega was apparently interested in doing it, but they hit multiple roadblocks every time they tried.
Alexander Hall
Bro it was a Saturn franchise with loads of translating to do. It wasn't worth the investment.
Henry Thompson
>He fucks each and everyone of them
Hot blooded shounen man is the best.
Luis Reyes
wasn't it just cause the Saturn did abysmally outside Japan?
Isaiah Bailey
Yea, but it was #2 in Japan, so they tried to make a new big franchise for the console. It's upsetting that something that has this much passion put into it is only now getting some real interest in the west.
I doubt Sony will do anything for it in the West tho. Hopefully they do a PC and Switch port to get more people in.
Ethan Hill
When a person finishes Sakura Wars 3, it meant the party was over. The ending theme of Sakura Wars 3 says it all youtube.com/watch?v=5Bv6w2Hh0-0
People legit cry over this song. If not because of the longest Sakura Wars game had ended, with all those multiple routes. 3 Discs of so many girls, so many different events, all voiced, and finally the end of the journey.
But because that was when the party had ended, and sega had its fallout. The party was over.
Sakura Wars 3 is the embodiment of that era. Where seemingly unlimited amounts of cash met truly inspired and talented people.
did some reading and it sounds pretty cool but I'm definitely going to miss out of I start from the new one
cool song though, I like the trumpets
Thomas Jenkins
But the first Sakura went evil on the new game
Nicholas Parker
There's no dub according to the original localization announcement.
Camden Howard
It's a soft-reboot/sequel so we should all be fine. It'll probably give you a crash course in the story mode or something.
Carson Bennett
Well there goes it's success in the west. Maybe we could have a Yakuza moment with it, but it would seem like such an easy slam dunk to have fucking Ichigo in this game.
I'll still get it but I can see the average Sony fan giving less of a shit because of it.
Bentley Gomez
maybe but I'm pretty sure the original Sakura shows up in the new one wearing a mask
fans would be flabbergasted but I'd probably just be "oh ok"
Leo Howard
>I'm definitely going to miss out of I start from the new one Eh, soso. Certain characters are returning but it's an all new cast and story
Lincoln Bennett
Most Japanese fans are surprised to an extent, but the game will probably explain her existence anyways. The fact that you know who she is is probably more than enough.
Porting it to PC/Switch to get a wider audience in the West. This seems like such an easy sell, especially with how popular Fire Emblem got.
Michael Wright
Although they tried to keep the steam going with Sakura Wars 4 and 5, it just seemed like the moment has passed for both the games. 4 was far much shorter than 3, and 5's MC did not bode well with people since Oogami was such a huge reason people liked the games.
Sakura Wars 3 was the end of an era in video games. A major cooldown, although still great, it was never on fire the same way. It was all just an insane period to be a fan of video games.
The circle jerk over 3 is far beyond just the game itself. It's the context, what it means, and what it represented for many people.
The new protag seems pretty fun at least. More stern but a huge dork that'll probably get hot blooded eventually.
Anthony Walker
This series' history is kino, it must have been awesome on it's peak with all the shows, and it's fall is also very sad. I'm very glad it's coming back. youtu.be/ZjNeJv1o86A
Jace Sanders
Given VC4's spectacular failure, I don't see Sega wasting their time with Steam and the Switch.
Jordan Sullivan
Shining Resonance Refrain and VC4 seem like a flop on PC so they're scared of doing full priced titles, Yakuza Kiwami 2 was already $30 on Steam after 6 months of PS4 release and it's still full price on PS4 also remember that the PC port announcement for VC4 happened at E3 which is after the initial announcement
Robert Roberts
I wanted to play this for years but. They never got translated.
David Cooper
VC4 failed on all front though, i thought every love that series
Samuel Moore
Me too user. I'm old, and I used to have everything Sakura Wars (even the dreamcast). I sold it all though.
Let's hope the series find success in the west. Maybe even an HD release of the previous games?!
Is the new one going to be a good entry point into the series? I know the gameplay is different.
Ian King
I don’t know shit about this series but it sounds kinda interesting and the art looks nice. Should I play the new one?
Hunter Torres
Based OP
Jaxon Cox
VC4 is such a strange case because the series was well liked overall. Bad timing? SRPG's are popular. Just look at Fire Emblem and how people are still talking about it.
Sakura Wars won't get any marketing in the West by Sony. Nintendo would at least talk about it.
Asher Evans
4 was also rushed out as fuck due to SEGA failing so bad at the dreamcast, its due t othe fact the team wanted an end to the story that it got released at all from what i remember, so as much of a letdown 4 was, atleast it gave soem closure.
Jacob Scott
Well I didn't care for VC4 because it's too similar to the first
Nathan Brooks
Played the first chapter in the first game and quit. This new one looks like it'll be fun though
Joseph Harris
It's a soft-reboot with only cameo so you're good
Kayden Gomez
No. The Sakura Wars games are first and foremost dating sims with some mediocre gameplay shoved at the end of every chapter and that sums 10% of your total gameplay time at best. It also was the original idolshit.
So do I play the PS2 remake of 1 or the dreamcast version?
Ryan Ortiz
Fair enough. Didn't pick it up due to me forgetting about it. Should have had a some form of marketing.
Chase Taylor
>the series was well liked overall False, and that's why 4 failed.
1 bombed super hard; like Nier, the only reason I got a following was the myth around it, the myth of being one of the playstation 3' most hidden gems.
So, a modern port of 1 came, people bought it in mass hoping to find a priceless diamond and instead found shit. So, 4 failed because people knew that the series was trash.
Carter Williams
>have to pick dialogue options under a time limit I wish this could be turned off
Dylan Garcia
You're a gentleman and a scholar. YU-NO is one of the greatest games of all time.
Look at all these people user. These festivals drew hundreds of thousands of people in what became a national sensation long after the cool down of the series.
I'd say listen to them instead of an user on Yea Forums.
It was a great success in the west, far more than it was in japan, so how does SEGA follow up with this? By moving both 2 and 3 to the PSP that sold like shit in the west
Jason Rodriguez
is the new one gonna be on pc?
Joseph Gomez
Please give me input on the vocabulary and grammar used in the game, can I handle it?
Hudson Parker
I'm with you on that one, but Fujishima is not taking as much work as he used to. He's old now user, and he has a very young wife to attend to
shining has been a force since the change in direction and VC4 was a flop across the board
Isaiah Campbell
So we're at the point where even the sakura taisen fanbase is turning into apocalyptic spergs. I guess it really is over.
Benjamin Carter
>full English translation guides
cmon now user, only 3 is what id consider a full one and even thats missing some events if you do them out of order. 1/4 are especially poor, 2 is mostly okay though if you dont pick sakura/kohran/orihime/reni you're out of luck for their character specific chapters and all specific dialogue following that chapter, least endings were tl'd
Asher Jenkins
honestly I feel like using that guide would take away from the experience. Might eventually feel like a slog as I look to and fro from it to the game. I've done some reading though with basic manga, if it is just as you say I'll give it a go. Thanks for selling me on it, the game has always been one in my backlog as I learned to dekiru looks like I'll finally give it a shot after all.
Jack Anderson
I didn't know Sakura Wars was so big in Japan. I only watched the anime years ago and never got to play the PS2 one, so I'm glad we're getting this, I'll unironically get it day one.
Ethan Brown
Imagine a writer that writes a book and prints 100 copies to sell. Everyone who glances at the book find it uninteresting, bland, boring or all the three, except for one person. That person likes the book, buys one and writes a positive review about it. The book has a 100% score thanks to that lone positive review, so it looks like it's a well received book. But in the real world, the writer lost money printing those 99 copies no one wanted. So, to recoup some of his loses the writer sells those 99 copies for a tenth of a price. People buys it because hey, cheap book and it has a 100% positive score.
That's Valkyria Chronicles. Don't listen to the people pretending that it was a sleeper hit or something. It was a niche game absolutely no one liked besides one very loud weirdo.
Nicholas Garcia
Well idk desu I'm just saying what I've been told. I went full moonrunes in the series when I played them as a lad. Maybe it probably has enough you can tell if you can read it or not
Ethan Morales
Watch the live stream of the devs when it first announced, everyone cried. Sakura Wars was fucking big
Luis Bennett
As someone who used them aswell as learning some nip as i went, 1 and 4 are especially bad, same guy i believe did all 4. 1 was very clearly his 1st attempt, 2 he took a lot more seriously, 3 he had assistance with so its more complete, and i think by 4 he was just burned out, either from the tl work, or like quite a few people 4 just left the guy sad.
Jason Jackson
How many endings do these games usually have? 1 per girl, or does it have bad endings too?
Xavier Roberts
Wait, he does?
Julian Morales
old fuck married a loli?
Benjamin Johnson
My lad, try as I might I could not express how much people love the series. It's insane.
It's like a symbol you have a true, pure love for video games in general in Japan, or something like that.
If SEGA ever translates Sakura Wars 3, you'll be able to feel just how much fire the whole industry was if that game was representative of it.
You'll be like "no way they did this, how much money went into this game?" every now and then
I wonder if we'll see them make ports of 1-3 with the hype surrounding this new one. I know it more then likely wouldn't see an english release if it did due to all the text but would be interesting none the less. This series is one of the biggest reasons I am so sad that I seem absolutely incapable of learning moon as it just oozes soul.
Jacob Jackson
Not anytime soon. I think right now all Sega wants to focus on is New Sakura Wars considering they also have an anime and stage play already in development.
Samuel Hall
>cosplay slut is the kid even his
Chase Lewis
1 per girl, no bad endings. A LOT of optional events. It's replayable to all hell. Check the pool often.
Tyler Torres
My guess is if this one takes off they'll likely port/remaster the old ones, likely just port again, hopefully it goes better than some of their previous attempts at porting it, least their PC one was atrocious
Jackson Lewis
Virtua Fighter...
Josiah Hill
They're full enough to play though. You're extremely railroaded, but you can play through the main game at the least. As far as 1 goes since that's the one I played through. I'm playing 2 now with the second guide but I figured I should try to text hook it since I'm playing this one on pc and so I have a bit more freedom. But I've been at it all day and it seems impossible to hook, even though there is a code the standalone version but not the boxset version of 2.
Wish I wasn't too dumb to learn nipponese...
Jace Rogers
Oogami is literally the best girl, so ofc they all want to fuck him
Sega had this has a trump card right before a shit ton of the west exploded with nipmania and SoA just went NAAAAAH. Then FFVII happened.
THANKS BERNIE STOLAR. fuckwit
Caleb Thompson
oh im not saying theyre not playable, just disagree with calling them full at all, its worse in 2 i find since theres a lot of events you can stumble onto in that one that arent even brought up in the guide, if you can hook it though more power to you 2/3 replay value is absurd if you care to look for events, ill never not be sad what we missed out on with 4 and having a full game of events between the 2 teams
Zachary Butler
is it on youtube? Just a yes or no will do. you got me curious
Zachary Barnes
What's the best Saturn Emulator?
Charles White
it's
Noah Bennett
Ah yes. You certainly get a 4 game series (plus one god-awful spinoff) from a series nobody ever really liked. Flawless Yea Forums logic, as always.
Reminder that Cheiron Archer is a massive negative racial stereotype, and I love her for it.
>Raised in the hood with a bunch of criminals >Becomes a lawyer to get her criminal friends off the hook >Tends to get angry and chimp out easily >Signature weapon is a whip >Signature food she cooks for you is fried chicken >She's too lazy to get up and go on a date with you >Said date involves breaking & entering
Also, I like her bike and she looks really cute with her hair down.
Translating some Japanese comments from the youtube songs to better convey the image of the series and what it represented. 1. コメントで書き切れないほど思い出がある作品です。 This is a series I feel so much about I can't hope to write it all in a single comment 最近のゲームと比較する気持ちなんて無いけれど I don't think there are no current games I can compare this feeling to 現代よりコミュニティを構成することが物理的にも金銭的にも困難だった時代に In a time where it was much harder to create and unify a community, both physically, and financially 作品を介して何かを求め作り出した人たちが、学区地域地方全国と Through the series, people who seek something gathered from school district -> regional district -> province -> all of the country 大きなコミュニティを構成してゆく現象は、高校生の自分にとっては大きな力に見えました。 As a high schooler, I still remember this phenomena of the whole country coming together into one single community and I'll always treasure these memories. ありがとうサクラ大戦。ありがとう東京BBS。年齢を超えた同志達に感謝。 Thank you Sakura Wars. Thank you Tokyo BBS. Thank you so much, my now-aged comrades.
>I don't think there are no current games I can compare this feeling to oopsie, I don't think there are any current games*
Parker Davis
It reminds me of people comments when World of Warcraft Classic was released. And now people experienced it and realized that it was a mediocre product idealized by nostalgia glasses.
Liam Howard
This year has been insanely good when it came to games. Stop tying to fit so hard.
Nathaniel Reyes
That comment was written 4 years ago or so user. It's just a translation, why yell at me.
Easton Harris
>its worse in 2 i find since there's a lot of events you can stumble onto in that one that arent even brought up in the guide Yeah this is part of why I decided to text hook it this time, happened a couple times in just the beginning of epsiode 2 already.
Michael Myers
yeah, youll find a ton of them in 2, i think 3 tl covered a large portion of them though only a few responses to those events, so you can potentially miss entire chains, hanabi's comes to mind if i remember right, if you got a hooker to work on that then that's great. I figured the choice system would fuck that up
Liam Miller
if you're attractive
Logan Williams
I don't think you lads can understand, but let me try to tie it in with Classic.
If I were to tell you where this and classic connects, even if slightly, or tangentially, it's not the game itself.
Maybe you're right, you play these games today, they might feel ordinary to you. WoW classic players might not be having the same fun as they used to hype it out.
You still don't get, and maybe even they, themselves, get what creates these feelings.
It's the context the games were released user. When classic released, shit was magical. I know it, I played it a little bit.
You're like 14 or 15, and you're exploring everything for the first time. You know what I'm talking about. There's nothing quite like it out there at the time and you feel there's a whole life inside this game.
Sakura Wars is kind of the same. You read the translation of this comment It was a sensation throughout the whole country of the likes that pulled people together even without internet to create these strings.
It was a time when sega would throw so much money in talented people that it was all ridiculous.
Playing WoW classic, or Sakura Wars now would be like enjoying a cake without the party.
The context matters a shit ton.
Isaiah Rivera
this looks good but, no homo, I'm tired of all my companions in games like this being women. Rad male party members are a dying art.
James Phillips
>no homo, but i wish there were more men in this dating sim
Nolan Nguyen
Will admit no kayama type character will hurt
Chase Price
I remember watching the niconicodouga stream during segafes and everyone was going crazy. Nice to see all that hype even though I couldn't understand it
Gabriel Diaz
If Shining Resonance Refrain can get a dub, I have confidence that Sakura Wars can get one.
Landon Stewart
I bought 5 a long time ago on a whim. To this day it stands as one of the best impulse buys I've ever made next to Dragons Dogma. And I don't even normally like SRPGs.
an all female cast and you being the one dude to harness all of the girl's powers and organize/control them is kind of a staple in the series
if they're following tradition, it's likely the males are leaders of their own squad which makes way more sense
William Garcia
Those are based off popular games and probably made a profit too
Juan Gomez
>Game >Manga >Anime >Stageplay I honestly hope it all works out for Sega since they obviously putting their all into this revival.
Nathaniel Ross
dont engage user, it's a blackhole not moved by logic
he's just gonna move to the next goal post, which sales != quality
not worth it, ignore and move on
David Stewart
She was the reason I wanted to play that game. Never got around to it unfortunately.
Austin Sanders
It's either going to be a big success, or youll likely not see ST for a long long while again. But looks like they are putting way more effort into this than 5 so hopefully it pays off in the end
Carson Ward
Should I date the cowboy girl or the commander for my first playthrough? Can you date the first loli you meet?
Jaxson Mitchell
Japan literally exploded when they saw Hanagumi (old squad) popping up in Sakura Wars 3.
I'm 100% convinced they're gonna cameo all of the previous characters. All anons will see then what I meant in this thread. Japan will cry all over again.
It'll probably do good in Japan, not so sure outside of Japan. Normies don't really buy dating sims
Austin Taylor
They're gonna cry alright when Yasha reveals herself as Sakura to Sakura as she's dying in her arms, freed from evil
Adrian Lopez
You should. She's not the best girl (couldn't get Ratchet on the first playthrough), and it's not the best game, but it's still pretty good and I was happy I ended up with her.
>White people playing Sakura Taisen This is going to be so cringe.
Jacob Evans
Don't listen to Yea Forums, ever. These idiots are going to leave you dissapointed
Carter Smith
I agree, it's like if a chink ran for president or something
Caleb Cruz
"As always another typical crazy japanese game for edgy people with over the top sexualization of female characters wouldn't recommend it but that's just me they should get notes from western developers since that kind of sexist approach has no place on current year" Kotaku 5/10
I hope it does well. I usually don't care about companies doing well but in this case the care and soul put into the project just shows, so I feel they deserve success.
Christopher Cox
Someone help me!!
Benjamin Powell
There are more poc who play weebshit than whites these days.
Oliver Wright
Hey anyone playing the PS2 game on PCSX2? Do you have the dark sky glitch? I don't know if it's just me.
Daniel Brooks
Sega's policy of day 1 world-wide releases starts in 2020 so get used to it.
Gavin Lopez
I agree. Never pick up the series please.
Jordan Martin
No way this game will be ported to Switch, the console barely handle Sonic Forces, I can't imagine it running Sakura Wars since the game is using the same engine (Hedgehog Engine 2) and the scale of everything is pretty big.
Hey dumb zoomer, nothing here was said about the newer game coming out. Everything is about the old games. That should not cloud your judgement about the one coming out, however.
Oliver Baker
If the switch can handle Dragon Quest XI and The Witcher 3 it can handle this.
I was the faggot who wrote that. Yeah, I'll definitely get it since I loved the anime when I was a teenager, too bad I can't date the same girls but the new ones will do.
Ian Walker
soul
William Jackson
I saw the gameplay at TGS and there's a part where Sakura changes clothes and there's a peeking minigame. I lost my interest right there, not because I'm offended, but because I don't want to play as a pathetic "hero" who has to peek on girls instead of being a Chad who girls naturally want to sleep with.
Aiden Cruz
Oh hi there Kotaku!
Brody Parker
okay
Caleb Johnson
>has to You have the option not to
Now go shipost on /pol/ like a good boy
Charles Flores
Kotaku would still be mad even if the protag was a Chad due to the age difference between him and the girls
Jack Edwards
Atomic bombs blew Japan away too, but they ain't so great. Fuck your big eyed masterbation aids, incel fuck. Play a real game.
Mason Fisher
I don't understand why the Japanese are so incessant on making everything porn
Lincoln Nguyen
I'm progressively getting more and more horny. There's this girl in my class who wore a crop top and I was just staring at her ass crack the entire day. HELP
Asher King
>soiboy scared of porn in Yakuza games and hide his face.webm
Henry Hughes
Game is rated Cero C, aka 15 and up so what is this porn you're talking about?
Gemini or Ratchet Subaru's third person gimmick sounds fucking dumb with the English dub. Reply to me that stupid smug learn Japanese chick. I fucking dare you
frontlinejp.net/2019/09/14/play-report-shin-sakura-taisen-project-sakura-wars-tgs2019-demo/ >Regular enemies come at the player in large numbers but do small amounts of damage and do not take swings very often. There are some stronger enemies that do swing more often mixed in, but combat remains mostly one-sided in the player’s favour. The result is gameplay feeling very Musou-like.
Nicholas Nguyen
Why?
Angel Gomez
Saturn/Dreamcast series with way too much text and very Japanese setting.
I'm still pretty convinced that the reboot's going to bomb in the west with people calling random weird Japanese shit.
They made 5 with the west in mind and brought it over and it bombed.
Luke Ortiz
>It's upsetting that something that has this much passion put into it is only now getting some real interest in the west. "Interest" is coming from retards who never played any of the games and whine about how it was a legendary turn based strategy series which is getting dumbed down for casuals now.
When it comes out they'll just go "lmao what is this dumb weeb shit".
Christian Rivera
At least Yakuza is making commentary with the porn in it. I highly doubt this game is going to mean anything in making its main character a sex pervert.
The torrent of porn the Japanese will produce after the game comes out.
Kayden Sanchez
This dumbfuck is full of shit and wasn't around for the series in realtime.
4 was a massive thing, it's short because it was an FD for the series not an actual game. It was a conclusion to the series.
5 was stupid shit that everyone got mad over because they replaced the entire cast including Oogami because they wanted to pander to Americans and killed the series as a result.
The prequel spinoff action game is better than 5.
Henry Davis
>full English translation guides EOP retard
Cooper Thomas
>lmao what is this dumb weeb shit
I couldn't have said it better myself.
Samuel James
V had a peculiar yet solid lineup of characters... except for meek milquetoast ass Shinjiro himself. I wonder why the English version completely renamed Sagiita Weinberg to Cherion Archer.
TELL ME WHO TO FUCKING PICK. STOP IGNORING ME PRICK.
>Gemini or Ratchet >Subaru's third person gimmick sounds fucking dumb with the English dub. Reply to me that stupid smug learn Japanese chick. I fucking dare you
also did you play the game on PCSX2?
Zachary Sanders
I can see the fucking "critic reviews" already
Can't wait for the semi-racist shit about Japanese having dated views towards women and how the game is "problematic".
Oliver Rogers
Fucking Taiga killed the series for over a decade.
Lincoln Sullivan
I only played V which is AMERICAN as fuck, I'm going to colonize Shin and you can't stop me.
Juan Roberts
Fuck me. These anons are bitches
Angel Bailey
i never played the game but this opening i fondly remember watching this opening in the 90's and thought it was an anime series. i remember watching an OVA in .rmbv format. wasn't good.
Asher Taylor
>I watched a side story to the games without playing any >wasn't good
Leo Sullivan
yeah? do you have to play pokemon games to watch pokemon anime?
Brandon Jenkins
Normally, its one per member of your core team.
That being said, they showed with V that they were willing to experiment. See Ratchet Route for instance.
Wether or not they play it safe with Shin is up in the air.
Jayden Hall
retard
Lucas Barnes
I first came across this series through project x zone. Really liked the music for the 2 girls that were in that game. Never gone around to playing this so I guess I'll play on emulators
Is there anyway to get into this series without using thousand year old guides, learning nip, or just waiting until Shin Sakura Wars comes out? Maybe the manga?
Justin Howard
Don't bother. Everyone here is a nigger.
Eli Gonzalez
Was the manga even translated?
Not the anime for the record, the OVAs are all side story stuff and the TV series is a load of stupid bullshit that fans make fun of to this day (all the characters are turned into assholes, the robots are made of cardboard, and Ogami is a non-character)
Jaxson Phillips
5 got localized and 1 is about to get a fan translation release of the saturn and later PC versions. That is your best bet if Sega aren't jews and decide to localize through sega ages or some shti for new niggas.
John Scott
Fuck you faggot
Lincoln Gomez
>TELL ME WHO TO FUCKING PICK. MAKE UP YOUR OWN MIND DON'T BE A BITCH LIKE SHINJIRO
Tokyopop released 7 volumes out of 9, Tokyopop died, and no one ever picked up the last two.
Ethan Parker
Do you have the dark sky glitch? I can switch to the other dx11 but then the frames go to shit.
Kayden Foster
>Symphonia-team tales games are all his. Phantasia, and Vesperia and others. I literally never made the connection even though I knew who did the OG tales of designs and who wrote/drew Oh My Goddess!. Wow
Jace Jackson
>Not the anime for the record Thank you for the heads up. Don't know about the manga, just figured I'd put out that I wasn't against reading the series if I had to.
Nice, I just bought 5 for the Wii since I still have my Wii U out of storage. Kinda feels weird that the fifth game is the best entry point into the series.
Are you okay, user?
Anthony Fisher
I mean he did the designs for berseria not even 3 years ago
Jaxson Green
The manga is actually good.
Juan Foster
Fuck you too faggot nigger bitch
Isaac Evans
Are you saying that because of that democratic party candidate?
Austin Diaz
I watched all the anime anyways and it was still nice getting snippets of the characters.
I think it was entirely financial. 4 and 5 were developed at a time when Sega had very little money.
Kevin Bennett
I picked Ratchet. Then Gemini next playthrough.
Josiah Anderson
You have to be 18 to post here, kid.
Dylan Cox
You have to be 18 to post here, kid.
Jacob Moore
What do you guys think of the new rendition of gekitei? I kind of dig it
Hunter Cook
>As a 50-something year old, he's now busy tapping pic related's 20 yo puss as his new wife.
That was probably one of the reasons they stopped using him (and for Tales)
Ryder Carter
What the fuck did you just fucking say about me, you little bitch? I’ll have you know I graduated top of my class in the Navy Seals, and I’ve been involved in numerous secret raids on Al-Quaeda, and I have over 300 confirmed kills. I am trained in gorilla warfare and I’m the top sniper in the entire US armed forces. You are nothing to me but just another target. I will wipe you the fuck out with precision the likes of which has never been seen before on this Earth, mark my fucking words. You think you can get away with saying that shit to me over the Internet? Think again, fucker. As we speak I am contacting my secret network of spies across the USA and your IP is being traced right now so you better prepare for the storm, maggot. The storm that wipes out the pathetic little thing you call your life. You’re fucking dead, kid. I can be anywhere, anytime, and I can kill you in over 700, and that’s just with my bare hands. Not only am I extensively trained in unarmed combat, but I have access to the entire arsenal of the United States Marine Corps and I will use it to its full extent to wipe your miserable ass off the face of the continent. If only you could have known what unholy retribution your little “clever” comment was about to bring down upon you, maybe you would have held your fucking tongue. But you couldn’t, and now you’re paying the price. I will shit fury all over you and you will drown in it. You’re fucking dead, kiddo.
Juan Hughes
Keep saying it
Easton Lee
Hey that's actually pretty good cell shading for 2001
Jackson Gonzalez
I can't find it
Christian Morris
I like the anime, I have fond memories of it and the opening is great
Anthony Taylor
I do not, sky's fine. The only graphical issue is the rare loss of alpha on textures which only happens during load transitions.
Thanks bro. I don't know what the fuck is wrong with the version with my emulator.
Jace King
VC is good, 1 is flawed and unpolished but it's part of the nature of SRPGs with experimental mechanics. Something is bound to be massively broken the first time around or two.
The first game did extremely well... in the west. Here in the west it launched early in the NO GAMES era of the PS3, so it got a lot more exposure than what a weeb RPG normally gets. It also had heavy military aesthetics as opposed to weeb skirts and panties that many people associate to "otaku trash", so it hit a very good nail for western audiences.
The problem is that the developer teams attempted to develop VC in order to make another "Sakura Wars" type of success in japan, so with the sequel they did everything in their power to make the series more appealing to japanese audience. It was a disaster and it bombed hard, as expecting of pulling a 180° on your audience in the name of pandering. So hard that the west, which was the core of the success of the series mind you, didn't even got the 3rd game that tried to go back to the roots.
So come in VC4 and the name and renown of VC vanished about 8 or so years ago and other more polished SRPGs are in the center of attention. Had they played their cards well, VC could even be what Fire Emblem is today.
Jordan Reed
Im a bit disappointed in that too, but it still feels like the same world.
Kayden Hughes
If 4 had played more like 3, I think it would have been far more popular.
For some reason the new game's gameplay and design of the mechs reminds me of Gurren Lagann. Anyone else get this feeling?
Ian Perry
Sorry bro i don't think i can find the live stream. I forgot where i saw it and there's nothing on SEGA channel
Isaac Lopez
it can't. those are cash grab ports with no regard for how the games actually perform on the system.
Christian Wilson
It reminds me of fucking Overwatch. D.va specifically.
Noah Thomas
Oh wait never mind, it's not the FULL live stream but it's the moment where they reveal the new full song. The dev trying to hold back the tears youtube.com/watch?v=57QcTxgUhIs
Brayden Edwards
Wish it was this big in Western countries....
Jackson Wright
Check out death stranding if you want to see fanboyism at its finest.

I hope the walking simulator won't be too drag out. I have to walk big maps for hours in Outward, not fucking fun.
Gavin Brooks
Gurren Laganns Gunmen had the whole SD mecha thing going on
Joshua Butler
HASHINE (HASHINEEEE~)
Nathaniel Nelson
How the fuck besides smaller mech These have actual arms and heads
Next to none unless the remake them, unfortunately.
Nathan Barnes
What's the point in playing the new game if the anime is coming out the same time anyway?
Owen Collins
Gonna go play Sakura Wars 1 because of this thread. God bless.
Jaxson Scott
How?
Nicholas Jones
Personally hoping for Sega Ages release or something.
Noah Martin
Ah my mistake. I just remember in 5 Subaru mentioned being in a group before the American team, and I thought that might have been her with altered hair.
Benjamin Wilson
This going to get ton of SJW butthurt when it come out despite the main thing about this series is about woman strength in fighting and femininity isn't it? SAKURA-SANNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN
If it's like Sakura Wars 5's, then the anime doesn't give you any of the girls routes, so it's a blueball fiesta.
Mason Barnes
Can't wait to watch the new game's show with you fags. I wonder if you can watch it livestream
Cameron Moore
Does old Sakura's VA still do any work?
Jacob Rogers
>remakes with Kuboifed redesigns >or even worse No thank you I dont think theres a single late 90's-early 00's anime game that has been remade properly
Jonathan Price
I've studied moon for long enough to presumably be able to play the games so long as the emulator doesn't fuck up and display the wrong characters, which I've witnessed it do sometimes.
On that note, I assume there's no difference between the PSP re-release of 1&2 combined, and the releases of the Saturn versions, but I guess it'd be a good idea to ask/check beforehand.
Carson Reed
;)
Luis Cruz
Is it worth hunting a copy of Sakura wars V? Will they likely start to disappear or reseller markets when Shin releases and will it likely ever re-release?
FUCK I JUST WANT TO PLAY THE ORIGINAL FOUR GAMES IN ENGLISH REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
Charles Williams
I know you're pathetic enough to be lurking, and vain enough to read this. The games you make suck, you're a piece of shit and you can't do magic.
Different stories between the anime and the game. Different protagonists (Sakura in the anime and Kamiyama in the game). Sakura is having a different Mech in the anime than the games. A completely new Revue will appear in the anime.
I wouldn't be surprised if the anime actually takes place after the game's story.
Asher Hill
WHat games in this series are translated, officially or otherwise?
Anthony Flores
Frankly SW is pretty sub-par as far as SRPGs go. Customization is limited, mechanically it's simple, and it's pretty easy as far as difficulty goes.
Julian Hernandez
>Sakura flower in the dress and behind her >Snowflakes floating around the sword >The sword's guard is shaped like both What does that mean? Did Rukia cucked Renji with her own brother?
The ice is a tease for the anime original revue. Which is most likely going to be Russia.
Brayden Nguyen
I don't know anything about dumb Bleach shit, but I do know that bringing Kubo on board was an incredibly good idea.
Noah Torres
What the fuck, she already unlocked her Bankai.
Lucas Bell
Can't wait to see her fight the totally NOT Nazis enemy.
Chase Allen
As someone new to this series I'm interested in this one. I know people are saying that these games are primarily dating sims/VNs with a bit of gameplay, the interesting part to me is that the gameplay is action-based. Most of the games of this sort to my knowledge when they have gameplay are usually turn based RPGs, SRPGs and so forth, but I can't think of any that have action gameplay. I'm definitely willing to give this a shot since I like action games, but I'm interested in the dating side of it as well.
Alexander Thomas
That's a shikai at best, you silly goose.
Colton Nelson
It's basically Persona in that regard
Brandon Hill
You guys hype for the Saturn translation coming soon and the PC translation not too long in the future?
Nathaniel Powell
Yeah, but action instead of turn based. A bit like Yakuza but with more of a dating focus?
Lucas Wilson
And all the choices is time count down instead of normal
Eli Cook
If Shin Sakura Wars does well, like Yakuza 0 well, then we'll see remakes. With the Best posibility being Sega Ages styled remakes with everything intact. Worst case scenario, globy FFV-VI mobile remakes style. Likely scenario, they take the PC versions and do reverse engineering to make it work. Ala the recent FFVIII remaster.
Anthony Diaz
Shin Sakura isn't a free roaming beat em up about Japanese gangsters. Response will be
Sebastian Campbell
I never said I expect it to do Yakuza 0 numbers, only that it's what it needs if 1-4/5 get remakes/ports.
Andrew Nelson
I don't know about TRANSLATIONS but I think the bar for ports of the older games is significantly lower given how all the games but 4 are already available on Playstation stuff.
I'd say that downloads of the 1 remake, 3 and 5 are pretty much a given at this point.
Gabriel Gutierrez
I doubt they will need to get this one to be a major success for ports/remakes. My guess is they are already in the oven cooking if not 1-4, some amount of them at least 1 most likely would be Sega Ages release of Sakura Wars 1 and maybe 2 as well. Also, maybe using the PS2 remake of 1, updating 2 a bit, using the ps2 version of 3 and porting the DC version of 4 somehow either as a collection or 1-2 or 3-4 or some way. I think they are already in development but they don't want to say anything until they are just about read and will probably be out at least the first game within 2-3 months of Shin Sakura Wars' release in Japan.
Owen Roberts
Also forgot about 5 which is also a given due to it being newer and PS2 compatible so could see them working something out with that.
Jonathan Reed
We live on a board where a huge chunk of the anons don't fucking know Dragon Quest, or the company SNK. How could you expect anybody to recognize Sakura Wars in passing.
Wyatt Rogers
ikr, when DQXI eng released a shit ton of kids ask what series is this
Brayden Ward
By board do you mean the Western world?
Jack Miller
>This series was a never-ending celebration of video games in general. >everyone in these threads is saying that gameplay was the weakest part of Sakura Wars Fuck off.
Charles Nguyen
OP is one of those poser cunts who never played the games or even heard of it until recently.
See You didn't even have to understand Japanese to have heard about the shitstorm when V happened.
Charles Davis
The previous games were turn based strategy, originally grid-based movement, but then became free radial movement in the third game. Shin is the first pure action title in the combat segments. In addition, like said, the cutely-abbreviated LIPS usually puts most dialogue choices and actions during the exploration/roaming segments on a quickly depleting timer. Letting the timer run down and not saying anything is sometimes the best option. There are also a couple quick-time events in LIPS, most common is matching as many inputs as possible to improve the outcome (sometimes not getting it perfect is a better choice), and the other is performing an action with a certain level of intensity (which Shin has also been shown to use, with Kamiyama going full ham in pic related).
Funny it was made for Americans yet no other game came over making it even worse and took forever for even V to release though NISA did work hard on it. How bad was backlash anyway for V in Japan?
Cameron Lee
>tfw always choose the bad option Girls hate me even in games
People hated it upon announcement because of getting rid of all of the old characters including Ogami.
I want to point out that retards who didn't play the games usually start to babble about 3 at this point but 3 still has Ogami as the main character and the Tokyo team comes over to Paris for an entire chapter. 5 has nothing like that.
Episode 0 was released and people warmed up to it a bit because Gemini was likeable.
Then V itself was released and Gemini got shafted like hell with none of the Episode 0 stuff being even vaguely relevant and most of the other characters were just unpopular (in fact none of them but Gemini are popular at all) and the series just kind of died off there even though they had originally planned sequels featuring Taiga.
Time treated it well enough that people don't hate it anymore though. Nobody will say it's their favourite, but they won't bash on it.
Carson Wood
How's the reception about the new team in Japan?
Ayden Wright
That sucks, really enjoyed Sakura Wars V, easily in my top 10 games of all time.
Levi Baker
>only one game in the series is translated/localized
Fans have been starved long enough that I think they'd take anything at this point and in any case they're loving it
There were people at the TGS stage events fucking bursting into tears when they played the old songs, and the Sega Fes museum where it was announced had tons of old fans showing up taking photos with their own ancient memorilibia
Brayden Cruz
Atleast Shin is already announced for localization withi 6 months of Japanese release and funnily enough both V and Shin are kinda soft reboots.
Angel Gutierrez
>Fans have been starved long enough that I think they'd take anything at this point
I'm starved for the first four fucking games in English
Logan Lopez
Almost nobody liked Shinjiro Taiga. Hell, he alone killed it. It's pretty funny, both the playerbase at the time and the characters in-game were pissed that instead of big dick boss man Lv.99 Oogami being shipped off to lead the NY Revue, they send some little twerp rookie. The America theme/setting wasn't an issue so much as no one from the older games making a cameo.
Meanwhile Gemini has become one of the fan favorites, she's almost always being used in crossovers/cameos alongside Oogami, Sakura and Erica.
They're different kinds of reboots though, Shin is respecting and referencing the original while V was "okay now forget about the shit you actually like and look at this new shit".
Ironically enough Galaxy Angel, which was very obviously "what if Sakura Taisen BUT IN SPACE" and a huge success on its own went and fucking copied what Sakura V did with GA II and the new cost new bitch boy protagonist and that also killed its series (at least they finished their trilogy though).
Justin King
I'm personally convinced that Gemini is popular because of Episode 0, she was great in that.
I'd settle for an HD remaster collection of the first trilogy, especially since the first game has problems running on Windows 10 and looks like total ass.
It wouldn't even be much work given how EL already runs in HD fine and the graphics still look great so all they'd need to do is reuse its stuff for the first two games.
Nope
Jose Taylor
They already did that one at the end of ST1, though.
Julian Ward
Every single fucking team member does that and dies in the first game
then the archangel st michael brings them back to life so that you can fight satan
Ian James
Absolutely, she also had better cast members to play off of directly, instead of mostly only interacting with Taiga.
Story of Episode 0 was also way better, not to mention how the fucking scale of the crisis was bigger than V's.
How the fuck did that happen?
Episode 0 has you going to the floating continent of Eden, V just has stupid Nobunaga in his stupid shitty robot being stupid.
Ayden Collins
There was also an extra ending in 4. It was the "don't pick anyone" route. Their reaction to that is this, and the credit roll over Kimi Yo Hana Yo shows a bunch of screenshots of Ohgami himself instead of the usual pictures of (chosen girl).
Do these games have anime adaptations that properly adapt the games so I can catch up?
Mason Bennett
There's a brand new manga in the setting of the upcoming game, the first chapter just released last week. Unfortunately, that also means that it's so new that I don't think anyone has yet translated it. tonarinoyj.jp/episode/10834108156683058404
Sakura Himenishiki Emaki and Kouma were canceled. The others made it out in various forms, along with a PS2 remake of 3, though their hopes for worldwide release didn't come through at the time.
new sakura wars game looks like a lazy rehash and making it a button mash action game instead of an rpg is a bad move that will make the social elements make less sense
saying something stupid (because you're on a time limit to make all dialogue options in these games) and pissing off a character so they have worse stats in the upcoming fight was the kind of thing that makes sakura wars better than other waifu games, and that cant translate the same way in a different genre that isnt as reliant on numbers
in an action game you can just play better to overcome a penalty
Evan Perry
Are there any fan translations of the games? I really want to dive into this series
Austin Barnes
>not going full ham all the time If bitches can't handle the alpha then fuck em
Benjamin Barnes
>It was a disaster and it bombed hard Got a source for that?
Jackson Brooks
They traded. Yakuza went from action to turn based RPG. Sakura Taisen went from turn based strategy to action.
Jason Hall
Looking at the bottom center, it’s clear that new Sakura Wars is lacking something in the character department. I mean, this is the funniest they have and it’s not THAT funny as it seems to be the character to fill out the tsundere role.
I haven't played these games before, and only know what I've seen for the past decade and a half, and that does make sense as an argument for SPRG combat back in Sakura wars. Translation of 1 is coming out soon for Saturn and PC port is also being translated and will be released possibly in a few months after Saturn releases by the end of this month. 5 is the only other one that got official release on PS2 and Wii in English markets where PS2 has the advantage of Japanese voices.
Robert Edwards
It's a waifu game, no big surprise.
Leo Parker
Is this haram?
Ian Sanders
So, did anyone else here head out to Tokyo in 2016 to check out the 20th Anniversary event in Akihabara, buy some merch, and leave a post-it note on the wall telling them to make some more games?
If you don't know about Fujishima, you might as well admit you're a fucking zoomershit
Jace Reyes
My first, second, and third choices for now, and I'm only including three because I'm not confident that the game will let Kamiyama pick either of the first two.
He unironically is though. Kubo's character design was always one of his strengths. The only critical thing I can say about his art really is that he abused negative space a bit much in Bleach.
She's not the tsundere. The redhead's the tsundere. In all the previous games, the kids were the innocent hyperactive ones, this is the first time the little one is a kuudere. Speaking of, I want Iris to make a cameo, now in her mid 20s.
And the terrible sameface the further the manga goes isn't something you can?
Ryan Ortiz
If the new game sells well it's a possibility. SEGA's also been rereleasing old games outside of Sonic (Yakuza, Panzer Dragoon, Super Monkey Ball, Hatsune Miku, etc) so there's a chance it could happen here. Despite all that it's still worth hunting for a copy if you feel like buying it at a certain price. I still plan on doing that.
Matthew Ortiz
It wasn't that bad, and it was kinda obvious he was burning out at that point. Burn the Witch looked fucking great and the new teikoku kageki-dan are the best designs since the OG crew.
Carson Cook
It's a fucking PS2 game and they're going all-in on reviving the series, there's definitely going to be a PSN release sooner or later.
Alexander Cooper
May buy a copy then, kinda want the limited edition one for the art and box. May sit on it and feel the water as the release gets closer to hope people don't start going crazy or hope they buy the wii version instead. Then why amidst all the talk of giving Shin Sakura Wars all this support, they can't even announce a re-release of any of the games when the game is coming in 3 months? This would be the prime time to do it unless they do it closer to release otherwise I won't get my hopes up and even then they might not be localized.
Brandon Foster
Because they want people to play Shin, not older shit?
An announcement will probably come a few months after the release.
Colton Butler
Maybe Red Company still has contractual say on the status of the older games and said no?
Joseph Morgan
Imagine announcing a soft reboot of a well beloved series for new and old fans, not only is it coming back you get to relive the classic Sakura Wars games on current platforms. You can play new and old shit and get complete context for the younger or new audiences. Bullshit, this is the prime time of it all they could announce it before or right after Shin Sakura Wars releases and even if it came several months later it would be hype, but they haven't even hinted at it and I don't know if they mentioned it so I won't hold my breath.
Brandon Adams
Why would they risk porting a bunch of games when there's no guarantee that anyone is gonna care at this point? If new sakura does well they'll probably try then.
Xavier Morales
Fujishima's designs have a timeless classic-like quality to them
Isaac Martin
Then why are they making and announcing so much shit for Shin Sakura Wars with stage plays, anime, manga, etc. before game releases built on the legacy of the old games?
Logan Davis
Fuck yeah Teikoku Kagekidan. The anime version is a treasure of humanity, tho the Saturn version is also pretty amazing in its own right. Damn.
probably won't cannibalize sales and rounds out the media package surrounding the game
Julian Jackson
I don't see how the old games will cannibalize the sales of Shin especially if they are not being released at the same time.
Luke Lopez
>why are they making and announcing so much shit for Shin Sakura Wars with stage plays, anime, manga, etc.
I don't know about remakes or anything, but all of those are series staples in Japan. I don't think they ever even stopped having stage plays. As far as remakes/ports go, that is a whole lot of translation to do. Maybe if it sells gangbusters over here in the West we'll get them.
>new fan sees Shin SW >Sega ports some games before the release of the new game >new fan buys and plays one of the ports since it's much cheaper than a new game >finds out he doesn't actually jive with the gameplay >ends up not buying the new title And that's not the only possible scenario It's better for Sega to just funnel all the new and old fans to buy the new title because they'll be dropping money for the price of a new title instead of dropping less money for a port or two and then potentially losing sales for a number of reasons
Hunter Rogers
They haven't even announced modern ports so unless that happens first we have no reason to think about translations unless for some reason they decide to port them after West sales primarily for Western viewers like what happened with the Yakuza remasters after 0.
Julian Parker
Why do nip games have to be so embarrassing?
Sebastian Martinez
It's called "humour"
Christian Price
I suggested they wouldn't announce or release until after the game releases. Would people really hold out potentially for several months just to play old games instead of the new one available now?
Brandon Cruz
And it still works, if you pick the right responses.
>The only critical thing I can say about his art really is that he abused negative space a bit much in Bleach. But how else would we know how important Aizen is without his massive couch?
>gets to see naked body of cutie >embarrassing GTFO faggot
Michael Hill
ok this is kind of stretching it do schoolkids even know about this franchise especially these previous characters, that they'd buy these things at their local bookstore?
Samuel Phillips
kid buy if they see it cool but mostly it sold for the fan
Austin Williams
>Up: No! This is a misunderstanding! >Left: Women's bath? Didn't even realize. >Right: Not a problem! I AM a woman! Kamiyama is already giving Oogami a run for his money.
It's simple, unless you're going to commit hard, you want a simple, clear, concise message. "Are you interested in Sakura Wars? here is a new Sakura wars that works as an entrance to the series!" instead of "Here is a new game, and also here's 5 older games that we're releasing. You can use these to get into this long running franchise, or you can jump in on the new game we're releasing!"
It's the difference between "Oh that's coming out, I've heard about that I might get that" and a bunch of conflicting and garbled conversations "Do I need to play these 5 games to understand what's going on? which of these should I get? can I play the new game without playing the old ones?"
Lucas Nelson
not even sure what they'll use those stickers for if they're just for collection why even bother making them stickers instead of something else
Jayden Cruz
Schoolkids aren't the only people that buy stationary.
Andrew Martin
I'm a little worried to see the western reaction to Sakura Taisen in a post Persona-3 world. 'Where is my gay route? This is demeaning to women! REEEEEEEEEE'
Now that I think about it, did any of those Fan Translations of the earlier games go anywhere or are they dead in the water?
Asher Sullivan
Both Sega of America and Sega Europe were run by unbelievable retards throughout the 90s. Among their countless dumb decisions that made Sega CD/32x, Saturn and even Dreamcast crash, they refused the localization of a lot of great titles, including Sakura Wars. Once Sega dropped out of console manufacturing and became a mere third party publisher, their ability to localize shit became limited by means rather than by morons. It's a miracle V was translated.
Noah Martin
Apparently, that one that people have been working on for years for the Saturn version is almost-done-but-not-yet-but-real-soon-here, or something.
Brandon Hernandez
Huh well damn, guess we'll see how that goes. I'm guessing the PC one from like 5 years ago is dead as shit then?
Christopher Rogers
There is a team who was working on the saturn version for a few years and a guy who with a friend who was working on the PC version. Neither team knew about each other until someone told the PC guy about the other project so now they teamed up where the PC guy is doing the translation edits and will use what they learned for the saturn port and hopefully release the PC port in a few months. Saturn translation should be out soon in an untested beta version, but available nontheless. And PC version should be in gear once they iron out any kinks.
David Reed
>post persona-3 world You mean the game that not even it's own sequels followed the example, and both sequels are far more popular than it?
Anthony King
Cheap to make.
Lets be real, even without the Saturn, the dreamcast was a huge mistake. Great games, but it was too weak compared to the stuff that was round the corner.
Cooper Morales
Well hell, that sounds like pretty promising news then
Isaac Long
twitter.com/NoahSteam_/status/1145944256252715008 They're in a testing phase for the translation patch of the first game on Saturn, with lots of volunteers trying out the first few translated chapters.
>It's a miracle V was translated. And even then it took them five years before they got the localization out and, as a result, launched a PS2 title in the year 2010.
My local import store has one on display and god damn I get the urge to blow my money on it every time I go in
Josiah Hill
You play as a big dick boss man coming in to run a underground military defense force that operates battlemechs that are fueled by your fucking hot-blooded willpower to fight supernatural monsters and asshole terrorist wizards. Said defense forces around the world use stageplay theater buildings as a cover and dayjob, so your unit are a bunch of banging girls who put on stage plays, handle more civil matters and hang out with you when there aren't any demons and shit causing trouble.
If you don't know moon, the only place you can really start is Sakura Wars V on the PS2 (sadly the only one in which you are not a big dick boss man but instead his wimpy ass nephew), and the handful of anime series/OVAs that cover older titles. If you do know moon, there are two on the Saturn, two on the Dreamcast, V and V:Episode 0 on the PS2.
Brody Bailey
Reminder that cj iwakura is a cunt who doesn't actually understand Japanese and straight up makes up bullshit
His "translations" are literally just fanfiction with him rewriting all the dialogue after running it through google translate and calling it localization
Jaxson Rivera
Officially? They're text heavy dating games with SRPG sections. Very few companies would be willing to invest a large amount of time and resources into something that niche for a western audience.
Daily reminder that, although the games have been translate for decades, people have yet to actually patch these games with translations. However, there's a fangroup that's nearly done fanpatching the Saturn version, and another doing the PC version. Both for the first game.
The Saturn and Dreamcast had the coolest limited editions.
It's a Steampunk/Historical Japanese setting mech game. It's half dating sim and half SRPG.
Daniel Sanders
So, for someone who wants to get into the series, which versions should I play? I hear at least one of the games has extra stuff on the PS2 version?
Aaron Reyes
V doesn't exist in my head space
Michael Brooks
The remake of the first game on PS2 uses the updated combat from the third game and better sprites and art for the higher output. Also the fifth game has Japanese voices only on PS2 as a second disc in the localization.
Thomas Nelson
Is this PS4 only? I don't like buying games on Playstation unless I really have to.
Thomas Adams
saturn/DC versions are the best, there is a PC version that ports all 4 of the games but its quality is iffy at best outside of 3 which by some miracle it didnt fuck up on
Evan Allen
They remade ST1 on the ST3 engine and released it for the PS2 so it could be that, or it could be the PS2 version of ST5 that had dual audio (technically two discs with sub on one and dub on the other) compared to just the dub for the wii version.
As for starting off, your only option if you don't read japanese in Sakura Taisen V.
Caleb Flores
V doesn't count.
Caleb King
Why did none of you fucks tell me this series had mecha in it?
Gabriel Thomas
Thanks frens, time to try and read some actual japanese.
I actually played V a long ass time ago, but barely remember it. I'm hoping to try and train my japanese with the games, actually.
James Perry
Or user could wait for the fan translation of the Saturn version if it really releases within the next week and emulate it. Seems to be a common thing glossed over due to the adventure, social and dating aspects
The series has mecha and demons and psychics and wizard terrorists in it.
Isaiah Smith
It's interesting how much the Paris girls stood out. I mean, I liked Erika a LOT since she was just such a klutz. The whole 'steampunk Paris' setting was great, too, and more distinctive that the relatively-bland Japan setting.
There was really a lot of effort put into this game. Multiple cutscenes, full CGI, and an enormous amount of voice-acting.
It's weird, but 5 seemed like such a step down.
Carter Hill
That's episode 0 which is actually good, not V.
Carter Phillips
>It's interesting how much the Paris girls stood out.
Thinks thats mostly cause 3 focused on a smaller cast over 1 game while 1 and especially 2 had to spread it out among a much wider cast, granted 3 is also where they started giving the side characters an affection of sorts too, just a lot of effort went into that game, its great.
>It's weird, but 5 seemed like such a step down.
cause 5 came out way after 4 and was more of a "lets try this again, without putting any effort into it" ontop of removing itself from the previous games characters, it really had no chance of being anything but a lesser copy of the previous games, still okay but you can definately feel it lacking
Josiah Moore
Also 5's protagonist felt a lot blander than Ogami.
Ogami's thing was that he was the straight man to the antics of everyone around him. Sort of a center of sanity in a storm of weirdness. Shinjiro was a lot younger and a lot more feminine, so he didn't have that anchor.
Justin King
>The whole 'steampunk Paris' setting was great, too Between the designs and music it was comfy as fuck. To the point where you actually did get annoyed with the bad guys showing up because 'fuck off, just let me enjoy this shit' youtube.com/watch?v=YOr4vfj7uao
Isaiah Clark
thats more to do with the time too, thats simply the kind of MC that was gaining traction, that or the brooding loner type which would have been even worse for that games setup. While in the ST 1/2 period strong, charismatic leads were the appealing character type, though you could play him as the complete opposite if you wanted
Jackson Ramirez
Any chance of Coquelicot making it in the new one? She's the best loli.
Jose Miller
all the lolis should have grown up to be titty monsters
Carter Brooks
Are these games fully voiced?
Nathaniel Martin
Im expecting/hoping for the whole cast to be cameo'd at some point in the game given how much money they already tossed at this, but who knows
Anthony Parker
Taiga was a worthless bitch boy and the only thing he had over Ogami was looking better in drag
Isaac Rogers
It's not FULLY voiced in that some of the dialogue isn't (Notably, the protagonist rarely has voiced lines except in cutscenes and combat). But the girls are almost entirely voiced.
The strangest thing about this franchise is how chaste it was.
Sure, there are some suggestive moments, but you don't get extremely risque fanservice. The romances move so slowly that by the end of the first two games (which span 2 - 3 years) you're not even officially a couple yet. The most you get are some glances and maybe hand-holding.
The Paris girls are slightly more forward, but it's more on the 'City of Love' aspect than the sexy aspect.
Adam Torres
Many scenes are voiced, but a good chunk is text only.
Brandon Thompson
Even though GA II bombed it still did some shit way better than Sakura V did, like in the first game of that trilogy the fucking main character of the previous series comes back with some crazy powered up bullshit and his entire team and you fight alongside them.
In Sakura V you get Ogami and Sakura appearing in the prologue for like five minutes and then they say "okay now you fuck off to America while we stay here" and that's fucking it.
GA II only killed Broccoli because they doubled down and went and made a whole trilogy even though everyone hated it.
Charles Jackson
To be fair, Sakura Taisen V's opening doesn't necessarily synch with IV's ending. If you picked Erika or the Paris girls, Ogami shouldn't even be there.
Josiah Smith
Does SW work under multiverse theory?
Henry Lopez
ST 1 romance is actually pretty well paced from what i remember, most romances ended with you being a couple, but it was a solo game at the time it was made and once they got the money to go on and make 2-3 they had to basically do a do-over for 1's developments.
Zachary Morgan
Each of the games has you start off choosing which ending you got in the previous one which became more and more problematic as the series went on
Parker James
I don't think so. You could actually take one save file over all four games. (It's not possible on 5, because all the previous games had been on the Dreamcast.)
Carter Green
Is it worth playing all the games on Dreamcast? Heard there is a system where they carry save data over to each game for some scenes. Was this present in the PC version which also had the first four games?
Grayson Thompson
Who needs multiverse theory when we can just run with "Oogami's harem contains all of the Japan & Paris girls and that's why he was too busy to go to America".
Luke Rodriguez
PC has it too, good luck getting ST1 to work though
Aiden Watson
As someone who had the Chinese-translated version, I don't believe so.
I know Sakura Taisen 1 had a *very* high-budget PS2 remake, and Sakura Taisen 3 had a standalone release.
Thomas Collins
I get really angry every time I see Kubo's character designs.
Jayden Torres
ill also note what carries over is basically just clear data, what you get is just some additional lines from whatever girl you picked in the previous game, like in 3 when the 1st team comes to help you there will be 1-2 extra lines if you go and talk to that person directly, 4 when you pick the girl you end with will remark on every game you picked her in previously if you have that clear data, just very minor things.
Camden Parker
Yeah, they all look very...samey. For what it's worth, I kind of like blonde Orihime best. I do think the designs are a huge step up from V, where only the nurse, Gemini and Rachel struck me as attractive.
I know V had one sexually-ambiguous character as a love interest, which was just fucking weird.
Xavier Diaz
Also, in 4, the first girl from the Paris group to show up is the heroine of 3. If you didn't play 3, you get to pick (or default to Erica.)
Brody Moore
Kubo really suffers from same-face syndrome i find, which is why im really hoping character will win out otherwise im going to have trouble separating these guys from bleach characters
Logan Perez
That so? I could swear i could pick whoever i wanted of the 3 team but maybe its just because i had a 3 clear data at all? Never actually went and tried a girl i didnt clear just cause it felt odd to do so but i guess that would make sense to lock you out of it if you didnt play the previous game, wonder if it does that if you didnt play ST 1/2 or aswell?
Jack Evans
Sakura IV's ending doesn't even sync with 3's endings. >Sakura 3: "I love you Ogami, which is why I want to do my time in prison and start a relationship with you with a clean slate" >Sakura 4: "A GIANT PISTOL SHOT ME HALFWAY AROUND THE WORLD SO I CAN BE WITH YOU!"
All this talk about older games reminds me I really need to try and resurrect my Dreamcast.
Jaxson Mitchell
Dont all of the girls little ending letters have a small PS at the end saying theyll come after you? Not to say it still makes complete sense but 4 was a rushed out game to tie everything up before the DC died to begin with.
The problem with Kubo is as far as faces go, he's usually kind of generic outside of some of his male designs. Where Kubo usually shines is in outfits and style when he actually puts in some effort.
Angel Richardson
I've heard about this rpg a bunch but it's never come westward right? I wonder why.
Ryder Harris
yeah, honestly im just not sure if this is something he should have been chosen for but, see how it goes.
Landon Peterson
Which is fine and good but the whole drama over that ending suggests it was a signficant period of time she was going to be in prison for, that she's sacrificing a large chunk of her life to become a better person.
Then she shows up 6 months later in IV with a handwave 'you need my help so I got out early' excuse.
Jack Johnson
very little awareness/appeal for it over in the west probably, though i would love to see how badly they would fuck up dubbing these games
William Campbell
Again user, 4 was rushed out as fuck, was supposed to be a full ending game instead of what amounted to a fandisc in terms of amount and quality put in. Though they would still probably handwave it
Lincoln Collins
Maybe Ambassador Sakomizu pulled some strings behind the scenes to lessen her sentence.
Zachary Hernandez
The fifth game came and there were attempts for previous games when they were ported to ps2 and psp. This one is coming over though.
Jason Hall
I miss it too user
Jonathan Ortiz
Next broadcast is next month. Hopefully this'll explain a few more things, like why the Shanghai and London teams have three mechs but they're only ever showing off two of the pilots.
Complete, full translations for every route? For every dialog?
Cooper Edwards
>gets to see naked body of cutie >cutie
They are cartoons, dude. The fact that they are cartoons is the embarrassing part. It is the same reason you wouldn't show your family this kind of shit. It is pathetic.
Blake Sanders
Anons! OP here, can't believe it reached bump limit. Thanks for taking part in it. This series is so special to so many people because it was at the center of a fervent period of video games.
But it also represents the subsequent cool down from the early 2000s all the way to 2006. It seemed to cool down just as fast as it heated.
It's a mix of emotions from excitement, nostalgia, burned passion for video games to sadness, waking up from reality, and feeling sad because it was over.
I hope the original games can come over so you can see what I mean one day.
The other members are in the opening, you can't get a good look at Shanghai though. Looks like there are 3 girls in each team, which means that Berlin is one member short due to no guys in the team.
I sent a physical letter to Sega HQ last week asking for ports to PS4 and/or Switch so they can be localized. You are welcome.
Adam Lewis
To be fair most of the issues with translating old games tend to be coding related, or in extremely early game cases, word limits.
Angel Kelly
Not even close except in the case of 3, theyre playable at best
Caleb Price
And I'm sure you showed your family those sweet sex scenes from the Witcher 3, right?
Noah Roberts
It isn't out yet but should be within a week
Aiden Scott
We've already seen that the Shogei-Maru appears in the new game, and other visiting troupes bring their own airships, but I hope they build yet another Mikasa to replace the ones they kept crashing into things. youtube.com/watch?v=_KmDFdYEpVA
I didn't play Witcher 3. I'd be more inclined to let my family see a sex scene in Witcher 3 than some naked bug-eyed cartoon teenager though, bro.
Robert Allen
Then you're just a hypocrite.
Liam Allen
right on dude, so If I drew the Witcher scenes and made them bug eyed you wouldn't show your family anymore?
Amazing Brologic.
David Anderson
Are you too autistic to pick up on social cues or are these the kind of mental gymnastics you do to justify your hyper incel worldview? This is your sign to reevaluate yourself.
