Its gonna have the core cutscenes from the original, with way more added content that focuses on shinra, avalanche and the initial story focus from the original game, which was avalanche vs shinra war. Thats it. It cant be called a "drag on" because right now your villain, focus and plot focuses on Shinra. Shinra is the big bad. Not sephiroth, not meteor, no ancients, no jenova.
If you dont like that and prefer the the rest of story, fine, its up to you. But to call midgar expansion just "filler" is just plain retarded.

The problem then is that the story is laid out. You can't insert new subplots just because you want to make chapter 1 of a book into it's own novel.
The biggest problem with this episode is that in terms of the overall story, nothing gets answered and much like the original story, transitioning from Shrina to Sephiroth will be janky, and harder because Shrina will have such a large backstory now.

We already know how the story goes, except now, unless they found a REALLY REALLY CLEVER way to integrate an entirely new story within the framework of the old one (doubtful), it's just gonna be the same experience as if you played the original in ten minute bursts and stopped to read the FF7 fan-wiki for an hour or two.
We all just wanna see Aeris/th die, and it deadens the hype a little bit to know we're gonna have to wait, not just another three to five years, but a good hundred or so hours of gametime to get there.
