Admittedly the DS was at a awkward place for handheld hardware. It could just barely do 3D, so most games either failed at doing full blown 3D, and a small group was smart and worked around the limits using lots of tricks. (Final Fantasy 3 turns a screen off so it only needs to render 1)
Then add to add to the shit show, a large group of devs failed to use the touch gimmick well because that was way back before we learned the lessons we know now about using touch screens in games.
There are some gems to be sure, but there is a lot of shit that sort of got crapped out haphazardly to maximize the gimmicks.
