The mangaka/writers/artists that actually lived through the war(e.g. Shigeru Mizuki most famously), and whose work tends to have a pretty anti-war slant or are pretty openly critical of Japanese ultranationalism and militarism that led the country to ruin, are either dead or retired or basically just fucking around at the producer level, so now you're just seeing a bunch of up-and-comers and boilerplate LN garbage make it to the market front which is where these kind of wacky sentiments tend to ferment.
It's less that they avoid it, and more that the people that wrote about it did it earlier and whoever came after was more interested in other periods or settings. You just don't notice it if all you look at is seasonal anime, trendy manga, and whatever video games come out of Japan.
I'll be happy if there's only one playable character so there can be a detailed moveset instead of a whole bunch of shallow ones like Senran Kagura. Even better if there aren't too many girls in the story in general, playable or not, to prevent things from getting bogged down by an overabundance of characters. Most countries in Europe have forgiven Germany for WWII, partially because they all made sure to hammer in the fact that Germany started the whole mess that killed over 50 million people. Literally every single country in southeast Asia would disagree with this. The IJA fought pretty damn hard in places like New Guinea and on most of the islands in the island hopping campaign. The IJN meanwhile gave as good as they got in the Solomons, but by 1944 they didn't have either the ships nor the men to be able to fight what had become arguably the best navy in history.

They had pushed the British out of Burma, and also took Hong Kong and Singapore (the later of which might be the most humiliating defeat in British history). They had seized the Dutch East Indies, as well at the Philippines. The IJN had won several limited actions against the RN, RAN, and USN.
Even after Midway, which was certainly the beginning of the end for them, they still fought hard in the Solomons and Papua New Guinea, both on land and at sea.
