damn, I didn't even remember l4d2 came that soon after the first, I was referring (with hyperbole) to portal 2 which seemed like it came way sooner than other valve sequels, time is more compressed when you are older so few years seem like a half, but l4d2 came out fucking fast

What's the best mid range VR headset, the rift s? I heard WMR has bad tracking and small sweetspot, vive has shit controllers and screen, and Index is too expensive.

vr headsets are like nvidia rtx, sure they have the technology, but you can't use it for shit, so there really isn't a mid-range headset, unless you feel like your head is too light and you just want something heavy to rest on your head

Portal 2 did come out relatively fast for a Valve sequel, but it too was a special circumstance.

After the Orange Box shipped in 2007, Gabe ordered the company to temporarily pause all projects in order to do a bunch of gameplay experiments in hopes of finding the next big thing. One of the results was the F-stop mechanic, which Gabe absolutely loved and asked to be made into a Portal 2. This was worked on through most of 2008 and 2009 but then abandoned when playtesters (probably justifiably) kept asking why a game called Portal didn’t have any portals.

Now a lot of the time this would mean shelving the game and pursuing other projects, but Valve decided to keep trying for a Portal 2 by just adding new features to the Portal gameplay by taking mechanics from the 2007 design experiments and shoving it in: AI companions reacting to environment contexts, gels, co-op puzzles, etc. Since most of the proofs of concepts were already done, they only needed to implement them into the game and polish it up, which only took from 2010 to 2011.

In comparison, Half-Life 2 took a lot longer to make because 1998-2003 was mostly gameplay experiments and design, and 2003-2004 the actual implementing and polishing.

Portal 2 took 4 years

Back in around 2008 or so I actually had the same idea for starting a YouTube channel covering Valve news: the Goldrush Update had come out with promises for more TF2 class pack updates, L4D was coming out, people were still optimistic about HL2 Episode Three coming out soon. I wisely decided against it, but looking back, that would have been the glory days for any sort of “unofficial Valve news” channel. Poor Tyler started in 2011 after Portal 2 came out and set himself up for eight years of disappointment and depression, and if I had been an idiot back in 2008, that could have been me.
