HxH is mediocre for the most of the story, but Yorknew and Chimera Ant arcs are one of the best storytelling in shonen.

People like it for the same reason they like Jojo: the arcs are extremely distinct on a tonal level. Each arc feels completely different. It doesn't all just blend into one generic mishmash like everything else.

Both of those together make up almost half the story in the anime, though. Dark Continent is pretty cool too, if we're going by the Manga.

I genuinely believe Hunter x Hunter is the most organic shounen ever written. It is one of the least contrived things I have ever read, regardless of genre. I strongly hold the opinion that Togashi is a masterful writer.

The fights broadcast on TV are always non lethal, and they follow general sparring rules with coaches. The Chrollo vs Hisoka fight is an excellent example of how incredibly powerful nen users who actually are using nen with the intent to kill would fight, and it turned out fucking disastrous. All of the fights in Heaven's Arena during its arc were plausible for TV broadcast. The top fights of Heaven's Arena are not Netero vs Meruem tier.

Togashi’s artwork can be considered below the “standard” in terms of how rough it is, but his sense of style and composition definitely makes it distinct and way more engaging than just the typical clean cut non-challenging prettyboy manga art you would see in any random page of a shonen magazine.

I remember reading in Bakuman, that one series about working with Jump by the Death Note guys, that Jump actually requires that the story has some kind of element that stresses the importance of friendship as well as some other things that I forget. That's why so many series have the "power of friendship" and stuff like that either because they're in their magazine or because it's inspired by a series from there.

Did he get around to saying what the deal with Gon is yet? Did his adult form cost him all of his nen and now has to start over from scratch, or did it sever him from nen completely forever? All I remember is something about how he can't "see" nen anymore but he could still feel it.

I always wanted a HxH game but rather than following the main cast and story its about the world to explore and playing as your own character. Maybe the customization should be like in Star Wars Jedi Academy, your character will already have a name and personality but you at least get to decide their gender and customize how they look like.

As a freelance hunter who lives doing whatever they feel like doing and since trying to put nen and custom hatsu in video game form is probably nearly impossible it would probably work best if your character is a specialist that has an ability similar to Chrollo's but works differently. Also for gameplay reasons it would work too so you can make your own custom nen moveset and not just be limited to one category and ability. Rather than stealing abilities since the MC wouldn't be a dick instead their conditions would be something like, 1. observe the hatsu you are interested in action, 2. learn about how it works and what category it is and any conditions it needs, 3. get permission from the original hatsu creator to learn their ability and have them say something like "I give you permission", 4. Train your nen and since its a video game you'll have a exp bar you need to fill out before you can use the hatsu.

I guess with the modern times the medium you would use would be something like a smartphone or tablet that keeps the data on all the nen and hatsu you learn and use. As a beginner nen user you are only limited to use 1 ability but as you get stronger your nen gets strong enough to use 2 abilities at once. Maybe at endgame when you become a nen master you can then use 3 abilities at once.

Even though it has nothing to do with the main story throughout the game you'd hear about events from the main story, like hearing about the Phantom Troupe attack in Yorknew, Greed Island being cleared for the first time, and the Hisoka vs Chrollo fight. Maybe also a mission where after you made a name for yourself you get hired to take out a bunch of Chimera Ants that have established a nest, perhaps that one alligator ant that we never saw or heard from again.

I know this will never happen and if there ever was a game it'd just be the main story with you only being able to play as Gon or some shitty shallow fighting game.

I think nen is a great way to handle power creep. It can be used in different ways from a straight forward attack (Uvo just put a ton of nen into his fist and threw a right straight and made it explode on impact) to more nuanced usage (Hisoka's bungee gum and texture surprise) to completely non-combat oriented (the nen exorcist from greed island or Bisky's nen masseuse that can instantly revitalize and heal). Even characters that are OP like Netero and Kurapika have weaknesses or can be hard countered by other users.

Watch the 2011 anime then read the rest of the manga.

It was good at the beginning. Got stupid midway and I stopped watching after the bugs. I don't remember much anymore but I remember everything not fitting over time. OPM is my go to. It at least connects through each arch.

Watch the first '99 episode or the Jump preview ova so you don't miss out on something important that the '11 series skips, then watch that one. '99 is good but has a little bit of filler and only goes up to Greed Island.

Its a good idea to read the manga from the beginning, if you do go the anime to manga route. While its a decent adaption and closer to the manga than the 99 anime, the 2011 anime skipped out on a lot of little details for a series that focuses more on build up and suspense than actual fighting. A good clue on this is read the first chapter then watch the first episode. The difference is that great. Just to save yourself from looking like a faggot in HxH discussions when people mention something you don't remember happening in the anime. The 99 anime is ok but full of filler and didn't get far compared to the 2011 anime. It also made the series look much darker and edger than the manga so comparing the 99 anime to the manga is like night and day.

I’ve literally fallen asleep reading some of the boat chapters. At some point I got fed up and just skipped all the dialogue unless it looked like something important happened. Now I don’t even bother checking for updates.

Good characters, good power system, and some great story arcs. Unfortunately the author is a huge faggot who goes on hiatus constantly, which prevents it from being as popular as it should be.
