- July 2015, Lloyd is announced as a Mii fighter costume alongside Chrom and K. Rool (among others). The announcement trailer includes a musical track from Tales of Symphonia. It's the only track in the trailer that isn't included in Smash 4.
- February 2016, in an interview translated by Source Gaming, when asked about the Lloyd mii costume, Sakurai said he believes Lloyd is the only appropriate choice to represent the Tales series. He specifically mentioned it can be difficult to incorporate characters without the help of the original editorial supervision.

Lloyd's inclusion as a mii costume was likely influenced by popularity. Mii costumes that were released after the ballot are returning as newcomers (Inklings, K. Rool, Chrom). There are also speculated newcomers within this group (Isabelle, Geno, and the Black Knight). Lloyd's inclusion is likely made easier because of Sakurai's collaboration with Tales of Symphonia's director, Yoshito Higuchi, as well as the fact that Namco Bandai itself is co-developing Smash Ultimate.
