Automata's the best Taro story yet with the least entertaining characters. That's the tradeoff you get when the themes aren't explicit.

I never noticed what was wrong until I read that. I enjoyed the fuck out of the story but felt something just wasn't right until the end with 9S going insane. Turns out it was just missing a cast with personality that I cared about

Nah, they have personality, it's just that the game isn't as blunt with you and focuses on subtext and tension.

Kaine, Nier, Emil and Weiss literally yell their feelings and motivations at the audience at points. Large parts of 2B's character are informed by A2's and vice versa, as well as their relationship with 9S, whose personality is heavily informed by minor comments and seeing events from two perspectives. All three are further examined by Sartre's admirers and the overarching theme of divinity and mortality.
They're just as complex and interesting as the old games' casts, but they don't express it to you directly, which makes them less endearing and harder to read.

Understandable. I enjoyed the hard to read aspects with 2B, but just couldn't attach to her as well as I could with 9S after learning more about his story.

I did buy them for the gameplay, though. ARPGs that aren't dark souls clones are hard to come by nowadays.

She's the least interesting protagonist, which is kind of the point with the dramatic irony of 9S trying to kill A2. The cast overall is far less likable than the Nier cast and more responsible for their own problems
