The launch model PS3's long term fail rate also isn't impressive, and it was priced high enough for you to buy two 360s

I also went through a bunch of 360s, but most of them were covered under warranty with only last and current 360 replacement having to be purchased because it was finally out of warranty. So even if it was planned, they ended up fucking themselves over by having the problem happen so much that they had to extend the warranty or face a PR nightmare, with replacements costing them way more money than whatever planned failure scheme they might have had.

That last one was also the newer S model which has survived much longer than the other ones, so in the end I think they fixed the reliability problem (it only took them multiple fucking years).

Still have my 2008 360 and it works fine aside from the disk drive sometimes catching but considering that drive has probably been opened and closed like 5000 times in the last 10 years its impressive it hadn't completed died out. My launch PS4 drive doesn't even pull in disks anymore I have to physically push them in because the motors don't do shit. I've opened the whole console and taken the disk drive out to repair it and wipe it down and everything with no luck.

They got plenty of money from the suckers that just took the paid 'repair'(refurbishing of some other 360 sent back to you).

Did it just fail to update and it's stuck on the update menu? if so get the update files to a usb from their site, that's what i did when i bricked my console by accident years ago

Rah, on the second restart after the latest update it gave me an E79 error, it just stayed alive long enough for me to backup my saves.
Right now it won't even give me video feedback, I asked around in modding communities and the only way to make it work would be to reflash the NAND, which isn't as simple as reflashing a BIOS on a regular mobo.
I'm now looking for a spare motherboard or a cheap used 360.

RROD is caused by overheating. Everyone who got it probably at some point blocked the vents or kept it in an enclosed space like a shelf or on top of other hot devices.

What kind of fool pays for something that's under warranty? The "repair" was covered under warranty, in fact. It was only after the extended warranty was over that you had to start paying for that (in which case you were better off buying the newer model). Actually speaking of buying consoles, weren't 360s sold at a loss? This entire moneymaking scheme doesn't actually make sense if each console was sold at a loss.
