Icons

This game is such a blatant Melee rip-off. How could anyone ever expect this to compete with Smash Ultimate or even Rivals of Aether? Hell, how could anyone actually expect it to compete with Melee?

it didn't. it died.

I've been seeing more Icons talk lately, and I'm convinced it's the owners of the IP shilling before it makes a resurgence.
Seriously, how long has it been dead? I've seen a lot of it in the past few days.

First time I see gameplay of it. Looks terrible.
Animations are so stiff

So much of this was clearly taken from Smash. Several moves seem to be copy and pasted. I guess I can understand using the wavedash mechanic, I think they went a little too far. Even the shields are taken from Smash.

Icons helped slap city become relevant for a while, I will be always happy about that.

And remember that icons was a huge money sink, it is a lost cause and will never achieve a resurgence.

it's literally made by some of the guys from project m

project m was literally cancelled so that they could monetize it by making this game instead

there is no greater justice than it floundering and failing

kill yourself, warchamp

Some retard bought the rights and is making it Marvel but with Smash ripoffs instead of just Smash ripoffs or something.
Or at least that's what I've heard.

I had learned that from the Project M thread, but I had no idea it was so blatant. They didn't even try anything new or original. They just took parts of Melee and shoved it into a "new" package. That sword character from the video in the OP had moves that were nearly identical to Marth.

At least then it will last longer than 5 months.

Those designs look like some moba rather than some smash clone.

>Melee fags hate the fact that Nintendo care's about adding more characters and making sure the game is fun for kids.
>Icons gets the most meta characters from melee and beings to slowly make new characters. everyone craws back to big daddy Nintendo and still begs for a melee game.

Fuck y'all, you never cared about the melee controls. It was always about the fucking characters!

This is so terrible, how could they ever think this would sell?

Did you actually try playing icons instead of being mad at imaginary straw men you created?

They could have had something big here if they didn't cheap out so fucking hard. Everything about this game is ugly

It's a shame, Project M and Melee fags won't ever get the joy that the only reason people pretend to care about it so far from back then is that crossover nonsense slapfests are fun.

Attached: 1231=032=1-23.jpg (1280x720, 58K)

Aether is for furries tho so

Nobody cares if it ain't a crossover fighter about characters people care about, that's the appeal.

So no you didn't try playing.
Might want to do that before you claim it's only the characters.

Yeah, no I'm not gonna play your shitty game for no fun alloweds.

I mean it proved that meleefags only play because its melee nostalgia and not because the tech or moves

So you refuse to play the game and then get upset at imaginary reasons that people didn't play it?

Someone post the copypasta already

>literally Marth and Fox
Does it have the same problem of 3-4 characters dominating like Melee?

I don't remember melee being online only with forced input lag.

They're not imaginary you fucking sped, I am here, right now, not playing that game for that fucking reason, and it flopped, for that very reason.
Ironically, Icons is not Iconic.

If that was the case then they would have moved on to Ultimate since a big part of that game is melee nostalgia

You remember it with shitty graphics (or shitty emulation), no online and gamecube slowdown

Icons flopped because it had no local play, was region locked at launch, had terrible netcode with built in delay and had loot boxes implemented before the game was even finished.

Isn't this game unplayable now?

>big part of that game is melee nostalgia
>literally 4 but further improved
>melee nostalgia
???

lostmediawiki.com/Icons:_Combat_Arena_(inaccessible_platform_fighter_PC_game;_2017)

Yeah this is a lost game now.

user it's literally dead. As in you can't physically launch the game to play it. It was so tied up with online that even if you have it on your computer right now the second you try to run it it tries to connect to the servers, gives you an error message, and then kicks you back to the desktop. Some people donated money to this and they can't even run the game locally anymore.

It was unplayable at launch.

Melee is dead and Icons: Combat Arena is the murderer.
After an excruciating wait, ICONS has been released on Steam to rave reviews. Its ravenous, ever-growing fanbase is currently experiencing an unprecedented, meteoric rise. As we speak, there are hundreds of people currently playing this recently released, heavily advertised, free to play game during a weekend.
Why is it so popular? I'm glad you asked. Have you ever wanted to play a game with just Fox, Falcon and Ganon? Heh, that was rhetorical. Of course you do. Wavedash Games eschews the bloated casts of modern fighting games to bring you a tailored, intimate experience that only ICONS can give.
If you want to expand upon the three starters, however, Wavedash of course gives you options. One thing this game is all about is options: meaningful player choice. ICONS allows you to choose from a variety of cosmetic items to fully customize your account in your own personal way. These avatars of individuality come to you in the form of lootboxes, the popular microtransaction avenue of today. Even if you don't pick up a new character, you'll surely win a new skin, emote, or even a spray! It's like Las Vegas, but you win every time you play!
Not to mention the staggering amount of work that went into polishing the game. From the jaw-dropping graphics to the fluid, artistic animations to the can't-get-it-out-of-my-head music, Nintendo just can't compete. Why suffer through the withered graphics of 2001 when you can experience all the technology of 2018 has to offer with ICONS?
There's simply no use resisting. Melee has already been put in its grave. Now it's just a matter of seeing how long your Stockholm Syndrome will keep you bound to a corpse. If anytime you want to experience a real game, I'd be glad to see you on the Combat Arena. And when that happens, whether sooner or later, it'll be iconic. :)

>meleefans couldn't even keep a game dedicated for them alive
Sad

You said meleefags don't actually care about the tech or moves so they should love Ultimate than considering all the remastered stages and returning melee clones

Icons is like a textbook example of shitty game development. Literally everything about it is shit.
>shit graphics
>shit character design
>shit sound effects
>shit visual effects
>shit animation
>shit name
>shit online
Literally is inferior in every way to melee, a rushed party game from 2001. They could've made so much money by just creating a waifu game with melee physics, but they completely fucked it up.

>You said meleefags don't actually care about the tech or moves
I meant tech and moves they like, they dislike any tech or moves postMelee

The devs hired ironstylus because they thought they would create the next league level sport if they brought enough "esports talent" to the team.

Goatdude=Fox
Blond dude=Shiek
Sword=Marth
Ogre=Ganondorf

I heard the Blue and Orange guys were unique pokemon trainer type deal, don't know about the black girl or Guan Yu.

Orange and blue guys

>
They had a falcon clone as well with the ugly black girl.

From the singular time we got it to work at a local that's pretty accurate.
There was the black falcon clone too.
The blue and orange you could only control one at a time and had some unique set ups. Gun slinger dude allowed you to control his shots with some interesting stuff and the other sword dude was pretty unique too, kinda hard to explain how he worked as I only vaguely remember playing him but he was kinda like a sword grappler.

Not at all.
>A.
Meleefags already have Melee. Why would they move to a game that is literally just a clunkier Melee with worse netcode? Their first mistake was doing so little to differentiate themselves that they added actual Melee archetypes and combos into the game
>B
They failed to realize competitive Melee has no mainstream appeal and is a horrible foundation for a free-to-play game. Brawlhalla to this day shits over all of the Smash clones in active players because it appeals to casuals, and thus a much larger market. Look no further than all the paid streamers who dropped the game in an hour because dropping a new player into what is essentially the pro Smash circuit is a terrible idea.
>C
The game is generally just bad, it was very poorly polished, technically amateur, light on content, strangely balanced, the character designs ranged from mediocre to repulsive, and the MtX was pretty atrocious on top of it all.

youtube.com/watch?v=yx9gYxS4_Vc
>shill game
>dies two days later

>competitive Melee has no mainstream appeal
This isn't true, competitive melee has had its recent moment in the sun because the combos are usually easy to comprehend and visually impressive to normies. Marth doing a ken combo or fox shine spiking someone is visually easy to follow while simultaneously looking technically difficult.

Icons fucked this up (along with everything else) with its garbage animation and character design. All of the moves are copy pasted from melee while being visually harder to follow.

Are they still making this? I thought after that business model shit that was the nail in the coffin.

I guarantee you the icons team dropped 10k+ in order for him to make this video. They wasted probably hundreds of thousands of dollars hosting afterparties at smash majors and paying for commercials at evo.

People this game is LITERALLY unplayable the game was removed from Steam and requires a server verification from a server that no longer exists.

God the characters in this are so fucking bad. Diversity over anything else. Fucking smashies.

We don't use that here.

The game is dead.

The founder of Wavedash made a blog post about why his game failed. I don't know how to link the blog post so I quote the ending.
"TLDR: So… back to Icons: Combat Arena and Lawbreakers.
Was there anything that they added or removed significant enough to attract people who didn’t play their incumbent’s games (Super Smash Bros. or CSGO/Overwatch)?
No. Instead, they focused on creating solutions for the audience who already loved these games. As a result, they created incremental improvement.
They were chasing a fool’s errand. Their initial playtesters were all passionate fans. They took the time to focus on nuanced differences and deeply appreciated them. These same improvements would be invisible to 99% of their potential audience.
That 99% would look at these games and call them “bland,” “uninspired” and “not unique.” If you’re getting similar feedback it means you are not being different enough.
Here's the last chart to summarize this entire post. The greatest opportunity comes from winning over people who don’t like your competitions’ games!"

This game's physics is really fucking garbage but DURRR WAVEDASHING

That shit is incoherent and a cope. It failed because everything about it was inferior to a 2001 gamecube game.

They arent even trying, KIDD is literally Fox

he's fox but designed worse in every way

Would the game have had a chance if they got a license like Hasbro characters?

No, it as fundamentally bad to begin with.

>online only
>microtransactions
>shit netcode
>NA/EU servers only
nah.

They should've done anime influenced waifus and muscle boys.

>6 million dollar budget online only game
>hundreds of thousands of dollars wasted on marketing
>peak players of 856

Attached: jfc.png (725x478, 68K)

Oh shit, it's actually showing the secret new build numbers.

It is impossible to play now, who is playing it?

>Gimr still shilling for this piece of garbage
>You (warchump) making a thread to try and bring attention to your shitty cashgrab attempt
pathetic really, I hope selling out PM was worth it both of you niggers

Attached: 1564880551887.jpg (877x481, 64K)

As long as the game boots, it counts as a "play" even if the game is otherwise unplayable.

hmm, wonder if they are trying to find a way to bypass the online check

>fox but a shitty looking pansexual

Watching the video, even the camera is shit.
Turns out modders aren't real game developers. Who could've thunk it?

What is Rivals of Aether

The game is dead, keep up with the news nigger.

except it was literally worse Melee
waste of trips

dead

But Melee just had a big tournament a couple of weeks ago?

>game got content updates this year
>steam workshop update soon
>reworked netplay soon

It doesn't matter what you say about melee on Yea Forums they just move the goalpost claiming it's proof it's dead.
