If you abuse save states you can find out that most of the options are locked once you begin the conversation. No matter what branch of lines you go down it will end in an attack or them fleeing.
It's pure RNG. Even if you use save states, the "correct" answer will shuffle around, and even when you get the chance to get either something from them or recruit them, it's still pure RNG bullshit.
Abuse bullets and spam Mazio with the heroine. It'll get you through most of the game no problem. Watch out for the mind diving dungeon, though. That place is a bitch. Also, expect a lot of what is describing. Demons will often ask you to approach them and will attack you no matter which option you pick. Lastly, Neutral route is canon and will give you the most content to go through.

SMT II I'm currently going through as it's the last mainline I have to finish and only played the first DeSu since I got sidetracked by the early Persona games.
I got the neutral ending in I and felt it was completely fitting for that particular story.

It's an interesting game. The gameplay mechanics make full use of the DS in every regard (even the mic) and the story, while a bit of a clusterfuck, still manages to start, go through a regular act structure, and finish without leaving TOO many questions behind.

Isn't it still popular? Not the original Devil Summoner for sure, but most Japanese Megaten fans name Soul Hackers as their favorite game. Some of current Atlus employees, like Kozuka, also claim that Soul Hackers was the game that made them want to work at Atlus.
It wouldn't surprise me. At least as far as Soul Hackers is concerned, it's very easy to get into, deceptively complex at points, and has a mood and atmosphere which are unmatched by any other Megaten game. Also, Nemissa is top tier waifu material.

The attention to detail is also noteworthy. BGM changing depending on Moon Phases, the way the skills work in battle and so on.

They really aren't that difficult, people just expect to play them like any other JRPG and forego de-/buffs entirely. As long as you pay attention and build a versatile team that can cover most weaknesses you will be fine.
Nocturne is a solid starting point to the franchise though, have fun.
Why would you recommend playing IVA without touching IV, that's retarded. There's a lot of world building and story in IV that's important for IVA and it's just a very solid game all around.
I just don't think IV is a good game. The setting's cool, I like the cast, but it's a slog. IV:A improves upon it in every way and doesnt need that much context.
