Levels are kind of superficial on Maddening. I only grind if I've got like 4 guys on level 8 or 9 to get their promotions.

im on a fresh ng as black eagles and when i finished the battle of the eagle and lion i literally just went fuck it. I used the dlc auxiliaries and scummed the fuck out of them (unarmed tanking for class exp and using every single heal every turn to level up my magic users). if you can, try to make sure theyre the ones that give gold too because cash is REALLY important in this mode (upgrading weapons to silver so you can actually do damage.) i wouldnt even say that grinding is pussying out on this mode or in this game in general because grinding still takes up activity points that you could be using somewhere else.

the turning point was definitely the eagle and lion battle, because i literally let the other 2 armies kill each other and i picked off the stragglers (and still won with most kills somehow.) i dont think anyone can legitimately challenge this guy on maddening on a fresh NG without very careful planning/scumming. he has the fucking pegasus knight (female only) mastery skill for fuck's sake

Why they didn't also flip this around on Claude to give him an actual reason to fight Dimitri instead going "let's see how this shakes out" into full fucking charge WITH reinforcement, I'll never understand.

i planned on going church so im half benching edelgard and hubert, but i dont even think i can manage making everyone a flier with the composition im given. so far i've done fine by having everyone go down the general classes. i originally planned on giving everyone axes/heavy armor at the start to go armored knight for the base stat increase for defense and possibly str if they get screwed, but it's not working outside of 3 characters who only got +1 or +2 on the stat. the only original plan i had that im sticking with is making bernie a holy knight, she's the only other person who learns rescue and i feel like that's gonna be a key way to tackle the later chapters because thats how i approached some of the beasts on the final chapter of church route when i played it on hard

BE has been going fine outside of a few hiccups. bernadetta is my mvp right now even though i will say i have waifu bias. the thing with her is that she gets deadeye, which is a fantastic baiting tool to lure single/small groups of enemies towards you, which helps slowly complete chapters. the one thing i did a lot was deadeye archers, then use pull back or shove to move her away, and the archer would approach on enemy phase. even with that said, she gets encloser at a rank in bows and that is THE BEST combat art so far for me, and you dont even need to do damage (just hit) and it will seal an enemy's movement.

the only person who i can say is struggling real bad right now is ferdinand, i feel like he's too "general" to actually do anything, but he packs a punch when i need a kill with swift strikes, and seal speed/shatter slash is fucking amazing during early maps. i probably made a mistake of trying to make him a great knight (decided to stick to paladin and stay there,) but he is excellent at support

I recruited Bernie too I'm guilty too, I always marry her and she has been great. Curved shot is great for chipping mages and her personal skill allows her do damage on the level of my Byleth and Dimitri since she came into my class at level 9. Thank fuck bows are good now. I feel her and Petra are easily the standouts of BE, no contest.

I tried using Ferdinand in my hard mode GD run just because I had grown to like him but fuck was he bad. I kept him as a paladin and at best he would finish up enemies I purposely left for him, he wasn't bulky enough to tank physical hits nor strong enough to handle enemies alone unless using the brave axe. I like him as a character but he might be one of the worst units in the game. If I was struggling to find use for him in hard mode I can't imagine how he would be in maddening. Still, I might just have been rng screwed, not sure how successful other people have been with him.

ferdinand can be anything honestly, he's one of three units who have no skill weaknesses (others being ingrid and leonie) i would suggest always making him use a lance though, he is just too good with a lance (shatter slash and swift strikes are great arts.)

he's great on hard, but on maddening, where generalists dont do so well, he works more as a support unit, and that's perfectly fine imo. no matter what his class is, he can support with seal speed, and he even has a decent support spell list (recover for when you get fucked by gambits, and ward for helping people tank magic.) he also gets thoron and bolganone, which are good for range and damage.

Unfortunately Ferdinand is a character who really wants lances, and A rank as soon as possible for Spear of Assal, so for ideal progression he's always going to be in some kind of mounted class (and fuck you IS for not giving us lance infantry)

I think the skill and class xp bonuses are well worth it. The game is easy enough that you can ignore the stat cap and xp bonuses unless you're on maddening maybe.

Unless you're on new game+ it's the only thing you can waste it on. However you might not want to if you're one of those people who says it makes new game+ too easy

I'm doing Maddening NG Black Eagles - Church, and its doable so far. Petra carrying a lot. Edelgard and Hubert are pretty much just heal sluts whenever I'm forced to use them so they don't take exp from kills. Getting a mission assist archer is useful for poking. Faculty recruits later on might make things better too.

Church probably. BE has the weakest starting lineup, and not being able to rely on Edelgard or Hubert sounds brutal in Maddening. Catherine and Seteth are great but they don't nearly make up for those two, especially since you can't control their growth from the beginning. Final map looks scary as hell.

That requires you to waste time in a class without magic growths to unlock, weight-3 is done in the background, if you push axes and heavy armor to c+ you get 45 to 58 chances of fortress certification at lv 20 for 35 hp 15 strength and 17 defence, it's not a fair comparison.

yeah that paralogue with alois and shamir is a pretty gigantormus dificulty spike if you play it early

i just warp skipped it because the commander is pretty weak compared to all the tier 3 units you face

Same, regrettably. I B-ranked her and Lysithea just before the events of Chapter 11 at the Holy Tomb. But I ultimately chose "I must protect Edelgard" as I needed to know what her exact motives were before making a decision on killing her. While I was able to recruit the former at Chapter 15, I was torn as I knew that eventually I would have to kill Annette if our paths crossed. I was hoping she would just magically fuck off into the abyss like Raphael, Lorenz, Marianne and I would never see her again. Nope. She was blocking my path to the Immaculate One and there was no way I could have avoided her. It killed me to have to cut her down. I didn't even want Mercedes anywhere near the vicinity when I did it. Felt like shit and unironically said out loud to Gilbert "I'm so sorry."
