Its not a blank check, Epic purchased X amount of copies and every copy after that amount gets the normal fee attached to it. So the first 200,000 copies or however many Epic decided to purchase was sent to Gearbox before the game launched, but its not the same as just giving a company free money because you still would have gotten that money anyway from box sales. Gearbox doesnt get to double dip, in that they get X number of copies sold then get to resell those, they are just guaranteed by Epic but then distributed to players.

In many ways its a waste of time on Gearbox's part, they would have made all those sales on Steam or Epic because casuals love this boring shitshow game, although the lower fee would matter.
