I've been more of a movie fanatic for most of my life but I kinda want to get into vidya, all I really play currently is classic DOS shooters and TF2 but I'd like to play something more modern.
Anyone got some suggestions? The most recent game I have played is Doom 2016 and I hated it
Don't. Videogames are still inferior to film. There's only a handful of games that are actually 9/10 and maybe 1 or 2 that are 10s.

>There's only a handful of games that are actually 9/10 and maybe 1 or 2 that are 10s. Well, name them
Grayson Gray
Both video games and movies have been ruined by sales people and their respective markets are run by ((them))
dont bother

There's still some good movies out like Blade Runner 2049

Just about the only games I play that aren't DOS shooters are Dark Souls games. Pretty much the last bastion of level design, and the multiplayer dynamic is really unique. Worth a shot if you like the exploratory side of those DOS shooters, there's a lot of meaningful stuff tucked away into corners for you to find.
Brandon Brown
I heard Bloodborne is better than Dark Souls, is that true?

you'll be disappointed if you're looking for any sort of artistic value. There are no Orson Welles tier games, the industry is almost purely for mindless entertainment right now. Modern FPSs aren't much better than TF2 and Doom 2bh. What game genres are you interested in? People really like Red Dead Redemption, haven't played it though. It's an open-world third and first person shooter, and you can do anything like in Grand Theft Auto, but it's in a spaghetti western setting >video games were never good in an artistic sense. They were and still are just fun >movies have been ruined by sales people there's more to film than hollywood, pleb

Play Killer7. Either via Steam or by emulating the GameCube version with Dolphin.
Kevin Ward
Even for an artsy-fag like myself, this game is terrible. The gameplay mechanics hinder type retarded story it's trying to tell.
Joshua Jenkins
>What game genres are you interested in? I don't really know, I just want something fun and arcade-y I guess >People really like Red Dead Redemption Yeah but all I have it a decently powerful PC I use for editing
Landon Ramirez
I second this.
Alexander Smith
I don't have a PS4 so I haven't played it myself, but I think most people who have would agree to that. The weapons are certainly more fleshed out to make up for being less numerous.

Hunter Myers
Doesn't really look like my thing, I'll pass
Wyatt Baker
>>Nier:Automata (2017) Isn't that game anime or something? Does this board not have a problem with anime? Everytime someone posts anime on Yea Forums they get called trannies and weebs
James Jones
it's anime but it's good anime like evangelion even Yea Forums likes evangelion
Michael Hernandez
Evangelion threads are also bombarded with "dilate" and other shit like that, Yea Forums seems to not like any anime anymore. Something I always disliked considering it means the board totally goes against the original intent of the site which feels wrong to me

you can emulate PS3 now with RPCS3 now, though i'm not sure about the required specs. As for popular PC games, off the top of my head: Bioshock, Portal, Spec Ops: The Line, Deus Ex, CS:GO, Dishonored, Civilization V, XCOM, Fallout, Half-Life. Honestly I've had more fun playing this guy's suggestions i recommend you do the same, though not necessarily in order. You could start in reverse, and there are great emulators for the non-PC games mentioned there

>Spelunky >Castlevania collection >Nex Machina >Hotline Miami These are some arcadey games, OP. If you are open to more suggestion I can add more.
>you'll be disappointed if you're looking for any sort of artistic value. There are no Orson Welles tier games, the industry is almost purely for mindless entertainment right now. You can't really apply "artistic value" the same way you apply to films. You need to keep the player engaged and it depends on the player themselves if they wanna play something like SotC or Doom.
FUCK I MISSED SPELUNKY AAAAAAAAAAA PLAY SPELUNKY (2012) IT'S GREAT

Are you looking at games for story/narrative or for the interactive component? If it's the former, don't bother. As someone else who used to be a film fanatic, I have never found a good game story.

Rank his movies, moviefag. I saw most of his work and honestly I only like Kane, and to be fair its such a fucking towering monolith of a masterpiece that it would have been enough had he only made that in all his career, but still, his other movies left me cold.
Samuel Jackson
>Does anyone have any suggestions for a video game? I only played one recent one and I hated it. Please give me suggestions based on my very detailed description of my likes and dislikes.
>Undertale There you go, go play it and don't look for opinions here or elsewhere.
Cooper Allen
>You can't really apply "artistic value" the same way you apply to films yes you can with good writing and creative ways of artistic expression. Devs are just not art-oriented, lazy, autistic furries, constrained by their bosses, or all of the above. Currently most games are limited to >cutscene (short movie or text, terribly written) >game, arrive at target, beating enemies or obstacles on the way >collect items for progression or illusion of progression >generic music, generic objectives, generic landscape >cutscene (short movie, terribly written) movies need to keep the audience engage too. All art has to in some way. Games could use the space and player interactions as tools for honest artistic expression, but it's just not at that stage yet. It's not what games are about right now, not even niche indie games, and there's barely an underground "arthouse" vidya movement. That will change when the gamedev industry stops becoming attractive exclusively to autists and nerds. You know what makes Earthbound so great despite being a traditional RPG? it was directed by an actually accomplished and talented writer, and he gave everyone artistic freedom, even the composers. It's still a simple children's game, but imo it had true artistic value
Julian Baker
99% of the time I’d rather read/watch a series rather than a movie.

Can we get a vocaroo of someone reciting OP’s post in an impersonation of Orson Welles?

Hello back again I'd also like to add Sengoku Rance (2006) to the list It's a genuinely top-quality strategy game that just happens to have porn in it
Colton Diaz
Would advise you just to check top-100-games-evaaar!! lists and just see what appeals to you from the screenshots. Besides here's some casual titels that are easy to get into: >Undertale >Shovel Knight >Oblivion/Skyrim >Stardew valley >Limbo >Minecraft

>Welles directed what is considered by most academics to be the greatest film of all time at the age of 26 >tfw 28 and have accomplished nothing Games where you can end it all?
Landon Richardson
>all I really play currently is classic DOS shooters Will you take a DOS RPG by chance?
The only thing I would consider the, "Kane" of games is Papers Please. It actually merges game play and story in a meaningful way that makes it a more impactful than any book or movie could hope to accomplish.
Ryder Lee
I agree with you that these problems are abundant with Western AAA games, but even then, niche indie titles do some creative things, and the way you say worded the problems makes it seem ALL of them suffer the same thing. It's like saying all movies are these blockbusters with nothing unique releasing anymore.
>Games could use the space and player interactions as tools for honest artistic expression, but it's just not at that stage yet. There are so many games that could be labeled that it's unrealistic for only Earthbound to have an artistic merit though most of them do get inspired from it so there is a correlation. Shit like Papers Please is unique and I doubt it can be replicated in a movie or book form.
Plus I feel you focus mostly on writing. It is obviously important depending on the title, but well refined game mechanics can be as equally memorable and important, which in turn can provide a better and unique experience.
Dylan Jackson
The Kane of games is Ocarina because it revolutionized the medium and the industry, despite the fact that it's been surpassed by other games since.
Leo Turner
Silent Hill 2 is a 10.
Nathan Wright
Ocarina of time is more like the Birth of a Nation for video games. It took all the known techniques and ramped it up to eleven. Even after BoN, movies were still considered inferior compared to literature, art and music. Kane proved that movies can tell stories in their own unique ways that the aforementioned art forms cannot. Papers please tells a story that no movie, book, painting etc. can compete with. The story isn't 10/10, but actually experiencing it creates a more memorable experience than any movie or book could. IMO.
Eli Cooper
no homo but Orson Welles looked pretty good when he was younger, shame he ballooned up like a motherfucker
agreed, I just feel that there are still not enough niche indie games that do this. There will be an artgame movement, but it's still in its early stages. Papers Please is a great example that will probably always be remembered among artgame buffs. And you're totally right in that it's not always about the writing, I tend to focus on it when discussing this on Yea Forums, just cause Earthbound is an easy example that depends a lot on writing. Mechanics are definitely important, just like cinematography methods and tech are very important in all film genres, and despite the pessimistic tone of my post I can't way to see how creative new mechanics are used to capture ideas in better ways than all other mediums

That's probably down to whether you prefer the medieval setting, armor and weapons with god and demons or the dark victorian setting with occult and cosmic adversaries.
