Or just do an overworld like they did with the original game with enemy locations shown on the map so there is an added element of either rushing headlong into a fight or navigating around them, they don't even need to accurately represent what enemies you'll be fighting, just have a generic symbol/creature/person representing an encounter that will take you into a seperate arena.

Midgar was a big area but pretty tight and railed. 1st Disc was until Aeris's Death, 2nd until beating Shinra and 3rd was the final dungeon + end game stuff, most you can start and finish on 2nd CD too once you get the airship.

Disc 1 ends with Aeris' death.

You could pop disc 1 in, remove it when it's not doing anything and put disc 2 or 3 in and still play it (with the wrong FMV of course) as the entire game is on both discs. My only issue is that it's only covering the Midgar portion. As much as everything else looks amazing, I don't see how it will be fulfilling as it will inevitably end on a cliffhanger and I expect at least two years until the next entry.

As an aside, I'm absolutely chuffed that they added a Classic mode where the characters auto attack between commands, both because functionally it will make the game play like the older games and because it will make it clearer to people that what I've been saying (that the time freezing is a straight up hybrid mode between action and JRPG) is accurate.

I honestly see myself using this mode the most. I do wish the time freeze didn't have the color grading though. I hope that's something that can be disabled.

Perfect example of what I was saying here The game is ATB based, just like the original. All of the attacking and movement that happens in between is just to build up that gauge and damage done during this phase is minimal. You have three options for how this plays out in battle:

Active: You control the characters and actively attack until your ATB Gauge is filled and can issue commands using face buttons and button combinations in real time, without the action pausing.

Hybrid: You control the characters and actively attack until your ATB Gauge is filled and time freezes when your gauge is filled, allowing you to issue commands at your leisure.

Classic: The characters control themselves to build ATB and time freezes when your gauge is filled, allowing you to issue commands at your leisure. This plays more or less how the original game did.

The game is built around commands doing real damage and base attacks basically just being a way to speed up filling the ATB meter.

All those areas had very distinct looks, and told a story of the section without muttering a single word: This is a place not really meant for humans to work in, built quickly and cheaply to leech valuable stuff from the planet.

Actually the damage you do with your auto attacks on a STAGGERED enemy are viable as fuck since brave for example does 1000 dmg while a simple swing of the buster sword did about 350 dmg, considering swings come out faster the damage ranges from decent to great.

Auto attacks are there for consistent damage while skills are there for burst damage. The myth that "in 7R auto attacks are only there for show" is complete bullshit.

I'm not even going to engage the value judgment because I think Dark Souls combat is shit (if you want to see the Dark Souls formula done with good combat, both Bloodborne and Nioh are better examples) and just point out that Dark Souls involves a lot of complexity in enemy attack patterns, timing, the poise system, etc. It's not about combo construction, but there is much more to think about in a combat situation than pressing triangle until your MP is depleted and then pressing it some more.

If "depth" is an expression of the number of choices a player is able to make in any given combat situation and the relative weighting of their usefulness, I would say it is. Giving a player a tight set of core options can constrain depth, but when the enemies have a wide variety of options and proper utilization of those core options in just the right way is critical to success, I think it enhances it.

Compare Dark Souls to something like, say, Bayonetta. In Bayonetta, there's no real "depth" in the dodge mechanic because it doesn't matter when, exactly, you do it, which direction you do it, etc. It's gonna shit out i-frames as long as your timing is relatively consistent, and the enemies tell their attacks with really obvious universal signals, so much of the depth comes from your offensive options. In DaS, knowing an enemy is about to attack is not the whole story; which direction do you want to roll? Do you have enough stamina to attack after? Can you tank the hit for a free shot? Does your build support that approach? etc.

These things are all decisions the player has to make. Yes, they're tied to a simple set of core actions, but the way these are utilized is nuanced. The fact that there are so many viable ways to play Dark Souls, so many builds that work for different reasons and require different sets of player skill demonstration, should be a testament to its "depth" in principle.

Frankly speaking Midgar in the remake looks more populated than the entire world in FF7.

Agreed, and Dark Souls' dodging and stamina management are much more about depth. Dante's offensive options are about breadth (there's also a lot of depth in there too, but in practice, there's no "depth" in choosing between Rainstorm and Revolver, it's basically a matter of convenience, the moves work in essentially an identical way. Dante has a lot of redundancy in his moveset, specifically because of the Style Meter system. On the other hand, there IS depth in a system that rates diversity for diversity's sake, but that's another topic)

They are obviously going to fill midgard with useless open world level sidequest exploiting Cloud´s mercenary background. We are probably getting sidequests from Wedge, Biggs, Marlene, Jesse to know them better at the very least but i wouldn´t discard mini games at the gym, a bike tunning system full of city street racing (and pimp my bike mechanics) and so forth.
They are also probably going to expand on the story by giving us missions related to the numbers in black cloacks and stuff related with Cloud´s past from the go. (more people will know him and whatnot)
If they are any smart they´ll also release some Turks DLC and make those fuckers playable or something.

As a personal policy i don´t trust SE anymore. While it looks better than both XIII and XV (which are utter shit so that´s not really much of a compliment) and i do apreciate that they are at least making an effort to give the battle system a tactical ATB mode i can´t really trust them until the game is released.
