You earn enough premium codes to max out your legions, and you'll get a lot of broken ability codes to play with. Look harder. The combat's good, but any time anyone says anything to that effect, it invariably triggers a bunch of fags who think every action combat system needs to have the depth and mechanical complexity of DMC or Bayonetta. Or people who suck at the game and can't figure out why they get hit when they try to dodge through attacks.

It's a very cool combat system. It's not as deep as a lot of other games, but it feels very stylish without being mechanically difficult, which I think was the goal. And unlike those sorts of Easy Automatic modes in a lot of action games, there's still stuff that's hard to do.

You really shouldn't be getting hit much at all. This is probably the biggest problem with the ranking system, it doesn't penalize hits harshly enough so people just think that's how it's supposed to be. The combat makes way more sense on Pt Ultimate because everything kills you in one or two hits, and a lot of the times you straight up get combo'd to death if you don't actively do something. I think the final boss has maybe two attacks that aren't instant kills.

Let me be the first then, the endgame combat is the best example of a literal JRPG combat translated into action game controls, with all the management, buffs/debuffs, stuns, DPS, tanks, etc. and commands to use all this in real time.

Its good action game for most of the files but the final boss and file 12 makes it feel like the best ARPG I've ever played.

Not at all. Taking damage is a very slow way to go about things. You also have a lot fully invulnerable attacks and ways to force openings.

Yes, it's extremely lenient. So if you're S+ing File 9, you only ever have to do the box minigame once.

Slow attack is nice on sword and doggo because they hit a lot of times so it's likely to go off. Crit damage on archer doesn't increase the damage of your aimed shots but does make its dodge sync do OUTRAGEOUS damage if you manage to shoot them in the back, highly recommended for the floating arm guys. Reduced cooldowns are good on dog and axe because they have extremely valuable skills, and attack up is good for axe too because it absolutely shits out damage when paired with your gladius.

Are there any upgrades for the transformation such as extending its time?

Crit chance is also a good choice for axe. At the end of the game its crits were hitting for 1.5k.

You can "dodge forward" but its such a small distance it won't cover many gaps and I'm not sure even if it could reach if the game will trigger it as a jump and not a fall.

Yeah it's howl. The cooldown is pretty short as is but when things get hairy it doesn't hurt to be able to throw it out even more often.

The super armor skills can be helpful on the dog too, just for giving you a chance to hop on its back while you're being hit. Only really necessary in the back half of file 12.

I don't get it.

Parry, Super Shield Omega, Effect Spread, Fortitude, Anti-Stun, keep some of the Anti-X for enemies that use attacks that lock you down (Anti-Freezing for ice attackers, Anti-Fire for fire attackers) and Anti-Slime for the few combat encounters with slime on the floor. Other than that, maybe attack up. Some collectibles, in my experience, required Chain Length + 5 meters.

i hate the ability items

i understand that each one takes up a number of slots. and that they can have additional slots to add things. but it's extremely unclear which abilities can be tacked onto Slotted abilities. and then when trying to tack on a [+] ability onto a Slotted ability, sometimes it just equips the item as Slotted and the ones you had on go back into your fucking massive pile. it's a horrendous system.

the henshin is another thing in this game that feels like it was added very late into development. which is understandable when you read interviews where they admit the story came after a lot of gameplay was already done and was rewritten a number of times.

you can tell they had to tack on most of the story to the latter half because the first half of the game is so different.

Maybe I could get some tips? I'm not doing terribly but I know I could be doing better.

1. How do I reliably dodge multi attacks that some enemies do? I dodge the attack but then get hit after the dodge ends because they are in my face and still swinging.

2. I have trouble fighting the giant monkeys but nothing else really has dealt me more damage aside from me fucking up during the beast legion fight. any tips on dealing with those big motherfuckers?

3. As I said before, I'm not terrible at the game, but I'm pretty sure theres something fundamental I'm missing about getting good rankings as those are wildly inconsistent for me. Anything that might explain why? I know its not about getting hit because I've taken plenty of hits and still gotten good rankings. is it stale moves maybe? not doing enough counters? not taking opportunities to hit or missing prompts for special attacks?

beast and arm dodge sync follow-ups have lengthy invulnerability, abuse it. Also howl (beast skill), blue shield (axe skill), parry(slotted ability), the delayed attack jumps back with iframes, perfect call, dashing dive has longer iframes than normal dodge...

How do I S+ Fused Akira? I dodged her attacks with Beast and played defense in the second part. I got a B even though the no damage bonus upped my score. What should I do to change that?

What I had to do was do as much shit as I could before fusion. Anything you do to the Akira clones doesn't count and you can't load like other red files in the game as you save after doing fusion which will fuck you out of S+ unless you can somehow beat fused akira without getting hit under a minute

Get the perfect call x2 bonus, skill master, Legion of Legions (use all legions, use hit rush and have two out at once), chain him up at least twice, and do it as fast as possible. Best fusion attack is the ranged one. Unscathed may not even be necessary.

I don't think so, you can press call button for a REEEE screech that stuns and your dedicated legion ability is you go into a turret mode and throw rings like Akira does by pressing attack. It's not like you can build resonance fast enough for it matter sadly

I just beat the game on PT Standard with an overall B rating. I never paid much attention to the dropped ability codes. What should I be using for each of the Legions? And does the arm legion ever get a 4th slot or is it stuck at 3 forever? What's with it having just a pile of locked nodes that require premium codes?

Beast equip, the motorcycle segment in 9 lets you also use abilities so long as you have effect spread

Olive cases hand out premium codes like candy on Halloween.

Give them shit to suit your playstyle, but you should have at-least one with parry + effect spread as it can reflect projectiles for free, all legions get five abilities slots and two unique skills

I use passive healing on beast legion, gives me back tons of health when I'm running away riding the dog and +16% slowdown on arm which is really good with his 360° oraora attack

I was just about to switch the difficulty to casual, when I said fuck that, and went to try it again, and won, but now Noah Prime is even worse. What the fuck is this shit? Bayonetta 2 on Hard was easier than this shit. This literally feels impossible. Bayonetta 1 on Normal (which is like hard mode in B2) was easier than this shit.

Damaging this boss is like going 5 mph in a 70 limit zone. I'm getting no where. I tried the fusion technique, and it barely did like 15% damage before it ran out. This is a battle of attrition where you can get one shot, and fucked up by multiple things right out of no where. Those lasers!? There's no warning. They just zap out. The black hole technique that sucks you in? If you're not already on the beast legion, then you're probably gonna lose that battery or get a game over. Makes it seem like you should just stay on the beast legion for the entirety of the fight.

You have to be complete dogshit at video games to lose this often.

I think it's one of the pickups you can find by revisiting one of the earlier files after getting the Axe legion.
I want to say it's File 5, either the reward from beating the Dryads or in the crate right next to that area, but I don't really remember.

Beast Legion is the answer to most of the big damage issues

IIRC you get actual fixed set colors for the slimes. The customizable ones are from one rank up and the rest from an item.

So what are the best abilities, anyway? The Super Armors seem like no-brainers but is anything else worth using? It feels like Attack Boost is still more useful than pretty much everything else. The ones that make you immune to certain conditions are good on a fight-to-fight basis, obviously.

Noah Core isn't that hard on the whole, each attack has clear ways of handling them

It's not that bad. I got S+ in Pt Ultimate yesterday, and there's really only a handful of cases that stuck out to me as really hard. Thing is that for most of the combat fights in the game, if you manage to survive it, you're getting S+. But some of the boss fights particularly can be extremely tough. The final boss took me hours.

You're missing the most important change, which is that you take like five times the damage from everything. All environmental hazards instant kill you and a lot of boss attacks will too.

No, it's exactly the same. So all you have to do is do a bunch of stuff that you were probably going to do anyway because it's optimal and start with all of your tools.

I don't believe you. I beat Noah Prime on my first try without much difficulty. Bayonetta 2 on hard gave me tons more deaths and continues.

The game gives you a TON of items to use and doesn't penalize you. Not only do you get small/medium/large medicine, but you're given tons of s/m/l medicine that can only be used in that stage.

You can carry like 5 of each type of drink (there's like 9), AND EACH DRINK HEALS YOU. That's not counting the temporary field drinks that you can only use that stage.
Do NOT give me any complaints about "when I drink, the boss will hit me", because you can pause the game and drink from the menu while combat is paused.

Let's not forget that the Axe legion gives you the "blue shield" skill which makes you invincible for 3 hits.

You even get extra batteries, pretty sure atleast two, that are temporary field supplies that can only be used that stage. This is on top of all the permanent batteries you're carrying, you could probably die like 7 times and still defeat the boss.

You can carry like 40 healing items into the boss battle, and several batteires (extra lives). His only hard part was the his instant kill black hole move, you can run away from that riding beast legion.

Remember, Gladius & Axe legion hit the hardest. If you aren't hitting that hard, remember you can equip your legion with +Offensive chips (or defensive chips).

You do know you can start from the tail end of the chapter, right? The game saves just takes your all time high score for the final grading, so if you got an S+ for all other missions in the file you only need to play the red cases which aren't at S+.

I feel like I owe it to society to warn everyone about the undodgeable bullshit instant kills in File 8 and 9.

S+'ing everything is really easy once you know the formula and how to exploit it. Especially if you're doing it after you've beaten the game and you've got access to fusion.

Even though the scoring system is dumb, I find it kind of inoffensive now. There's really only two or three fights in the entire game where I had to play in a certain way to make sure I got my score up, the rest of it was just do what I usually do and get my free S+.

Depending on the fight that might not be enough. You get something like 400 points for fusion but if that's all you do then you're just gonna get that, the time bonus, and not much else. The little bonuses you get from using skills and doing sync attacks add up. Also fusion is a limited resource that doesn't automatically refill between files, so unless you're autismo maximus and are willing to spend ten minutes doing sync attacks on the nearest wall until your bar fills up you won't be able to do that for every fight.

Yeah, but take the chapter in File 04 where you fight Jena. If you need to do the bit in the mall just before you fight the Homunculus, you need do do the Arm Legion mission first, then another mission just after the tentacle one, then another one just after that, then you get the hallway bit. You're forced to do those missions and you can't skip them.

Since DMC5 only ranks you on all the fights you DO fight, it's easier to do super well on as few fights as possible and ignore the rest.

Looking at the grading system more in-depth, you get an S+ for hitting 10,000 points. Points that you're more or less guaranteed to get if you aren't playing like a blind paraplegic baby are as follows:
Finishing touch, do a finishing move (300)
Legion of legions, use Hit Rush and summon another legion, cycle through all legions (500)
Stunning, stun an enemy, just use Howl (900)
Sync Attacker, Sync Attack Master, just use sync attacks (3000)
Legion Skill, Legion Skill Master, use Legion skills (1600)
Backstab (600)
Perfect Call (1000)
Just those above put you at 8300 points, not including time bonuses or other smaller bonuses you get for mashing buttons or just existing, not even for no damage. S+ ranks are stupidly easy to get once you've got all your legions and unlocked most of their abilities.

Talking about DMC5 with that statement. Your style points are the average of all encounters in a mission, which means that if you get an optional encounter with like one weak Empusa, fighting it will tank your score. The way to get S rank in that game is to run past a bunch of enemies and only fight encounters long enough for you to build up your style meter. It's completely bonkers.

Over 10,000. I've suffered through the pain of getting 10,000 exactly and being handed an S on more than one occasion.

It's even easier than that because the minimum time bonus is 1,250 and not using items is 500 or 1000.

I didn't say anything about 60fps. I'll be satisfied if they can get it to a stable 30. As it is the game runs pretty chunky at times.

Honestly I never noticed it being chunky outside of one single area where I was doing like 6 things at once.
I won't say I'm the FPS expert at all but it felt pretty stable my entire time playing it. At least stable enough to make me not notice and difference.

The requirement can be higher on specific cases. I passed 10,000, failed to reach 11000, and got an S many times.

Which legion skills are the most useful? I sort of wonder if stuff like the attack boost or speed boost are worth using.

Speed Boost goes great with Gladius, naturally
Power Boost is good for when the opponent is vulnerable

Other useful tier skills are Beast's Howl, Axe's Crash Bomb and Blue Shield, and Hit Rush for Legions like Arm and Archer.

Nope. Ever had the place you lived vandalized? You think if you were in Los Angeles, saw a kid spray painting a parked car that they would stop? And that punk was spray painting a car in a school parking lot. You think the mom & pop stores look at graffiti on their walls and think "this will really bring the customers in"?
TONS of city side missions. You don't have to do most of them, but people expected non stop action, so it wasn't a welcome change of pace when they got many side quests of puzzles/box carrying/digging/beast riding/shooting etc.

If you want straight combat, File 12 is just combat and no story.

I really loved this game. It's pretty casual if what you can do on the combat but even then you can still make some pretty cool stuff. Soundtrack was pretty good, the dev blogs were informative, art book is pretty great, art style is on point, it was worth my money. I'm a third world piece of shit so 60$ was a huge investment. I don't know why I thought MuA3 was a worthy investment but damn Astral Chain made me not want to play MUA3 ever again. I'm still on the fence on Daemon X Machina though

On file select you can check your exact score breakdown, right down to how many points and which bonuses you got on each red case. Unless you've already overwritten it with an S+, I guess.

Loving Astral Chain, though it kind of bothers me that whether or not people can see your Legion seems to be a little inconsistent. When fighting against regular civilians they'll attack your Legion, and I swear there're occasions where you can eavesdrop on Hermits, who have shown they can see the Legions and Chimeras via purple drank.

The hidden shit in this game is fucking ridiculous.

So about Jena:
She's a half aberation because she stayed in Astral Plane for a long time, somehow didn't red shift or lose her reason. She hasn't aged a day since. This is all from her notes in her "Jena Aberrant" enemy file, so anybody thinking she was taking medications to turn into an aberant are wrong.

Her second form is actually when she goes aberrant. Her third giant form is when she becomes a chimera.

Also, the humonculi alll started being creaed just after file 04 started, they're described as nascent (beginning to exist or develop). Further, the files state that the humonculi were created by the stolen protolegions Jena took from ARI, and then feeding those protolegions chimeras & astral plane data (hence why the mini humonculus are eating the walls when you see them, they're eating to grow). Further the tentacles in the mall are feeding on chimera/astral plane dna to then feed it to the humonculous to make it grow.

Seems Jena didn't realize the twins were the ones using legions against her in the mall, she just through everybody was a nobody police force lackey for Yoseph. It wasn't until Jena stabbed your twin that she realized the person she stabbed was one of those twin "devil's children".

She thinks it's "too bad" that your twin survived, she's always bringing about that these half chimera/aberant states are curses not blessings.

The day she dissapeared into the astral plane was also the day of the pandemic ("I haven't changed since that day") but that seems to be wrong, unless she disappeared hours after babies rescued because how else could she have known the babies were so famous?

There might be more to her. She wants humans to survive, but keep their forms (not chimeras)...that might be somewhat possible with her as she can transform into aberant/chimera, then go back to human.

Wish the game would make more distinctions.
Chimeras = naturally made from astral plane. Chimeras take humans (and more) back into astral plane, where they're converted into data stored in the rocks.
Legions = man made artificial chimeras?
Aberants = zombiefied humans corrupted by Chimeras
Jena = half human half ...something else? Aberant? Chimera?
Twins = half human and half ...something else.
A halfbreed like Jena, but not the same type of halfbreed somehow. The facial veins when the twins power up look very natural and biological. Whearas the veins when Jena powers up appear linear with curves at right angles, like the squarish crysteals of the astral plane. her eyes also go red (like most aberants) but she glows purple.

Lastly, Noah is described as neither Legion nor Chimera, so that's something else there too.
Think you're right about the street gangs fighting your legion, but I think the hermits you eaves drop on are just normal uppers who have been hired by hermits for odd jobs like lookout & gatekeeping

The ranking system may be a bit too lenient but I am glad I can experiment around with items and not nuke my ranking. I think at the very least you should not get an S+ if you use a revive.

The reason I think why Legions & Chimeras are different is because if you look at the game's file on Noah, it says that Noah is neither Chimera nor Legion, implying those two things are separate.

But looking at the opening cutscene, it seemed the legions were created from Chimera cores that were hit with a bunch of this blue colored lasers/energy.

The cores always seem to animate, always shifting. After the core becomes a chimera, it turns blue and stops shifting. The legion core unit you wear on your wrist is always shifting, so I think that this was just artistic flair on the animators part to highlight the "before vs after" change on the legion's core.

Seems Legions aren't just chained Chimeras, they've get hit with a ton of blue energy which changes their core from red to blue. When the legions get freed and become legion nemesis (that you later have to collect) they're kind of purplish.

Not sure if the colors mean anything beside game design.
Blue = good (your legions)
Red = bad (chimeras, aberations & raven legions)
Purple = other? (nemesis legions & Jena)

Come to think of it, your legion "eats" the cores of other legions for health, kind of like the humonculous eats chimeras to grow... then again that just may be a gameplay function for you to heal rather than anything to do with lore (implying your legion is absorbing the data/souls of countless other legions)

Jena made the homunculi by channeling chimeric energy into legion cores. This suggest that legion cores have qualities that regular cores lack.

thing is, it seems like chimeras are made from the combination of who knows how many souls (10? 50? 1000?). It reminds me of this thing in Bleach where there were these spirits called Hollows that were initially just 1 dark human soul, but then there were other hollows that would get bigger and bigger by eating countless other Hollows. Eventually the story had Hollows who claimed they ate thousands of souls. I get the feeling we may have that here, were an individual chimera has perhaps hundreds of souls inside it. Not all that different from what Noah was doing, except for scale, in that Noah was to absorb all life on the planet.

It also seemed, judging from the arm legion's actions, that the Legions itself were trying to absorb their former masters. So those guys are in there too.

At such a point though, it feels less like "people" (individuals) and more like "data" (stop seeing them as individuals and more like hundreds of faceless people). Somebody described chimeras as digimon (beings of data) and the Astral Plane as God's backup server. It kind of feels true that way. It feels further reinforced when you see how there's always "data" (random characters/numbers) floating in the air around legions, hell it seems to float off the hermits too.

Everybody expected something like Bayonetta, Wonderful 101 or Metal Gear Rising...its none of those things and is off doing its own thing. Name change, you have to add 20 people to the database to unlock it. Just go around HQ taking photos and you should get it done quickly.

Oh yeah, one thing I forgot to mention about that whole data thing is that when you use the Beast Legion to track a missing child, Hal makes this weird comment. He says that the beast legion isn't really smelling (it probably doesn't even have lungs), but rather it is sensing the trace data of the target lost child, and cross referencing it with the police records.
That makes sense except the police records part, because if the police had any records to reference to be able to locate the lost child then the child wouldn't be lost at all. It could be that this is one of those futuristic cities where everybody has some ID that's always plugged into the system. Kind of like in Minority Report where everybody's eyeballs were constantly being scanned in every camera wherever people went, or maybe they have a microchip in their hands. It's not really brought up...but I guess it's gotta be true or else the IRIS system wouldn't always be telling you everybody's ID, DOB, weight, height, etc whenver you looked at them. And the IRIS does this for even people in the quarantined Zone 09
I guess the police do have records on everybody at all times if the IRIS is supposed to function. I guess the only question is why don't the police use that data to find the lost child, maybe the access to that data requires top clearance.

Now that I think about it, this kind of puts everything in a new light. Legions aren't the defense against Chimeras & the Astral Plane, it's those blue laser beams that turn chimera cores into legion cores. Those blue lasers are essentially the anti-AstralPlane I guess. Kind of turns everything on its head

No. You can choose to quit File 11 early to go back to File 12. It's in the "Options" tab somewhere, I think the thing you're looking for is something called "File Options".

Also, you don't have to go back to the beginning of a previous file just to play a mission in the middle of it. Each file is split up into segments and you can return back to any one of those segments. Also if you press Right on the D-pad when highlighting a segment, it will tell you the breakdown of your scores for each mission that segment holds

The game auto saves many, many times during a file. Pretty much after any major event, like getting a mission grade, changing locations, or I think even finding a key word will prompt the game to auto save. You'll see something (at the top?) of the screen that says *saving*
