I finally beat Shara Ishvalda! No carts and 36 mins. He really isn't that bad once you learn his moveset, but phase 3 kicked my ass 3 times before I could get it down.

Just dodge it or return to camp to restock. Shara telegraphs its attacks very hard, make use of it to sheathe and GTFO of the incoming hit. Don't get greedy and watch out when it repositions itself.
If it gets up and does the long distance wub beam, clutch claw it after it starts the beam and weaken its parts. If it isn't enraged throw the fucker into a wall with the claw. It drops thorn pods, so if you're using a light weapon it's stun city during that fight as long as you don't use them all during the rock phase. Breaking its front legs also trips it for a while.
The long distance beams where it roars and goes a bit backwards goes all the way to its face, so try to smack it a bit and then get away from its front.
The huge sonic blast it does is good for repositioning. Roll the fuck away from it and do your thing. The fucker will combo it after a spirit bomb eventually, so watch out.
The sweeping beam ends with a long range frontal hit, so try not to stay on its front.
Eat for felyne cleats to avoid quicksand slow or equip mirewalker stuff and DO NOT EVER stay near them when a beam passes through them, they tremor you before the rock splash. Just fucking farcaster whenever it does the spirit bomb or stay the fuck away.
Rocksteady mantle on Shara is some risky business, watch out if you're using it.
If you're hugging it with IG aerial attacks as it attack watch out, its upper limbs and back becomes a hurtbox whenever it spits beams for some reason.

abuse your new aerial R2 attack. buff your kinsect with L2+Tri+Cir and then make sure the R2 marks it for bonus damage. Use a blast dust kinsect and pop the blast clouds for massive damage. Focus the tail whenever it's clean, and you can break it really quickly.

These next few months are stacked with other games, so the wait is fine, I guess.

3 pieces nargacuga plus odo coil and rathalos chest if you want an easy time without worrying about sharpness
However, since kula ya ku hammer has so much white, I find 3 points in handicraft to be managable enough. I wear fulgar anjan head, rathalos chest, acidic glav hand (legiana hand beta if you aren’t there yet), odo waist, and glavenus legs for now with attack +3 charm. I just finished acidic glav.

I'm using slugger. Monsters have been such spastic fucks that I just want to keep them in place as much as possible.

It's only right considering that the Jho HBG was cancer in HR I should know because I specifically made it to carry me to a ton of fast victories in my catch up run up to Iceborne

so apparently even with GS some of the elemental match-ups end up trumping raw like with the Velk GS. I guess they really did give element decent buffs

What weapon were you using?

You think there is someone out there who saw that Rajang statue and got turned on at the thought of it charging at them like that but with a huge hard on ready to turn them into a sleeve for Rajangs pleasure?

I'm not in end game yet but I was using rathalos helm and chest piece, tigrex gloves, beotodus waist and glavenus legs. A nice mix of attack boosts, health boosts and handicraft (handicraft necklace too. I traded out the waist for Ishvalda's later.

Once you progress a bit you definitely want three pieces of MR Teostra. Literally every hammer needs master touch. The meta sets I saw were Kaiser crown, Kirin Jacket, Kaiser vambraces, Kaiser coil, Garuga greaves.

Oh and ditch the acid glav hammer for Ishvaldas as soon as you can.

Maybe it's just an online thing but I've noticed in a fair few hunts there'll be times where monsters just stop doing anything all together and just idle for a couple seconds. Not even doing the drooling animation, they just kinda momentarily have a lapse of concentration and forget what's going on. Narga especially, but I've seen A.Rath stand in the same spot for 15 seconds not moving, just idling while everyone whaled on it. Same with Teostra too

This has happened with almost every monster, especially Glavenous. It's like they just forget you exist.

It was nerfed in IB but in the base game its pretty strong to get in your endgame gear, still you should prioritize skills for the specific encounters over it, like trading an attack charm for effluvial if you're against AT vaal

the waits not so bad now that the initial hype has died down. Those first few days were honestly ridiculously hard to not crack and double dip. Now I'm Just getting caught up on my backlog until it finally drops for pc.

There's a difference between that happening and what I've seen though, monsters freeze awkwardly when the server shits out, in this they're still fully animated but it's like they've been mind wiped and don't know what they're doing for a good 10 seconds

He's one I've seen do it too, shame it doesn't happen for his acidic cousin though. Also I had one moment in the B.Vaal fight where he tarded out and legit just did the same move 4 times in a row and let me get off a shit ton of damage of him, and he refused to come anywhere near me.

I just finished the quests where you have to fight Tigrex and Brachydios, and then now it's asking me to repel Velkhana, whom I haven't fought yet.
I've mainly been using Gunlance and Hammer, and while I don't cart too often, my hunts are typically 18-22 minutes and I feel as if I've only been getting by due to having a shield.
Kudos to you people who have been doing this for awhile, it's definitely starting to get tricky just to survive.

GS main who played all games since 1 here.
I bought the game yesterday on steam and played it for 6 hours, just finished getting to the coral highlands. My questions are:

1) How many hours I need to beat the main campaign solo?
2) Can I farm the top gears until Iceborn come to PC if I play 3 hours a day? Don't have much time due to work.

Garuga is the funnest fight I've had in the game. His hitboxes are tight, moves are predictable, and it's easy to break all his bits
I run SA though. Can't imagine how weapons without vertical attacks would handle him

I had Guard 5 and Guard Up using 2 piece Uragaan gear. Just spammed counter clutch for easy hits.

I usually just wait for them to separate and fight like a madman when Jho finally goes somewhere else. Sometimes I try pooping my target out of the area instead, and then farcasting back to camp to lose the Jho, and hope he doesn't follow my target around.

The earlier the monster appears in the game, the odds are you're going to be able to upgrade their weapons in to MR versions quicker. Something like an Elder Dragon weapon, nah you're not getting quick upgrades on those for a long time.

Longsword if you want to be able to do counters and shit (it'll probably feel a bit slow in the beginning but once you start using the counters it's probably the most active weapon in the game). Switch Axe once you think you've got a good idea of how to play the game, it's perfect for a hack 'n' slash fan but you need to have superb positioning to make it work.

Speed is everything. The main job of the kinsect is getting you your extracts, and the higher the speed the more natural it'll feel

S.Legiana has weakpoints you can actually hit and the fight is not artificially prolonged by snow being as hard as iron

Kushala is not as annoying as Beo, you can also effectively knock Kushala down over and over while you beat his head. Beo is fucking cancer. I've never seen a beginner monster have so many things that artificially inflate the length of the fight. Snow "armor", instant Ice Blight, shit hitboxes, constant swimming away, weak point that out of reach the majority of the time, ect. Beo is the biggest piece of shit they've ever made and makes Lavasioth look like good monster design.

he's top easy, He's got it all, spectacle, challenge, one of the best designs for a monster I've ever seen and all his weapon's and his armor are fucking great. Would probably be perfect if not for the fact that Ruiner comes in to finish him off, I got exited when he got back up because I thought he'd run and the threat would still be out there and that would really make him feel like a threat. I'd recommenced doing any monster solo the first time you encounter them since you aren't really forced to learn the monsters moves as much online and it can be a crutch. But after that you can go online all you want and you'll probably be better because of it, because you know how to react when the monster does things since you've experienced them 1 on 1.

If you successfully use it it doesn't cost a spirit gauge. Though I guess it could be used to attack through some obvious attacks like the monster charging at you?
Although does it actually negate damage taken or are you only only immune to flinching?

It negates it. But so does Foresight Slash and that also gives you one spirit gauge while the Iai Spirit Slash just doesn't use a level. So far it seems like a strictly worse FS, but I really haven't seem a lot of experimenting with it online so it's hard to say.

This is the number one problem that people can't seem to get over. Literally just keep using the new weapon. It's just like action games isn't it? Just keep playing and practice until you get used to it and you get a groove. People just pick up a weapon, use it for like one or two hunts, don't get it because they don't wanna try, then drop it and sink back into their bread and butter. Trust me when you learn how to generally use all the weapons, you then start to get a feel for weapon matchups and what works better for some monsters. Just keep trying weapons and once you get used to them all you won't regret it, because then you'll have more options and have a much more enjoyable experience.

What's with this vague phrasing on so much in this game? Why can't it just state "increases sheathe speed by 30%" or something? Meanwhile for other skills the percentages are written out, but for some reason they are omitted from some.

If it's of any consolation it took me around 100 attempts before being able to solo regular behemoth and around 300 before being able to solo exemoth with the HH and another 50~ before doing it with the LS as well, after fighting it for so long you just end up tapping into ultra instinct.

It's not even that difficult to avoid. Running right next to it lets you avoid the spirit bomb. You just have to be mindful of the fact that it might whip around and hit you with something else a second after.

Exactly. Once you master a single weapon, those skills translate to the next weapon. I was a gs main then I picked up hammer and IG and mastered it in just 3 hunts against behemoth. Its not hard to pick up weapons if you aren't a room temp iq shitter. Which most of weapon main are. I have 100+ hunts with every weapon at this point

Airborne is a no-brainer since it's only one slot and gives +30% damage on all your air attacks in Iceborne. Apart from that, normal dps skills are applicable. You will absolutely want something to mitigate sharpness loss. Apparently, Flinch-free stacks with orange extract's effects so that could be useful.
As for bugs, speed>attack>stamina. Work out how much speed you need, then prioritze the attack stat next. Also, make sure you have five of your preferred bug with all elements, since a bug with effective element does a lot more damage. I prefer blunt bugs for the ko ability. I can usually get at least one ko per hunt and all I have to do is keep the monster's head marked.

Wall bashing is useful. It's basically a successful mount any time the monster is not raged. If they're turning actual mounts into wall-bashes then I agree that's retarded. Monsters usually end up facing the wall after a mount topple anyway, so that's the perfect time to go for a second wall bash topple as soon as they get up. At least it's better than fucking chinks flashing mid-mount, god that shit is annoying.

They are. They're the new plates for MR monsters. It's generally more annoying to acquire the celestial prints that allow you to craft them, vs the gold wyvern prints. Also in some monsters you have to double break their head to get a mantle, so farming them takes a bit more effort.

I miss alchemy

Aerial damage got buffed in Iceborne but it's still not worth it as a source of damage. At least the circle attack anyway, just hit a few things with those dinky aerial hits vs. ground combo and you'll instantly see why everyone says not to spam aerial if you want to do damage. It's primary usage should be to maneuver around using the monster as a trampoline since the last hit bounces you back up and resets your air time. For example if you're going for a mount and the monster happens to move away, dash + aerial helicopter so you can reset and get in a better position to come down on the tail or head with the triangle attack. Just be careful not to get swatted out of the air, never forget that the air dash is useful for dodging as well as moving toward the monster. The triangle aerial attack (falling buzzsaw move) is actually useful, as it does great mount damage and should be your go-to move when actively trying for a mount.

I've only played a few hunts with IG so I don't know the ins and outs of the new claw mechanics yet, but the R2 dive move seems to have good damage, and being able to claw from mid-air to farm ammo seems really useful, especially since ammo can now buff kinsects.

You have a new really good aerial attack with R2 now that is pretty fucking useful for doing damage and breaking parts. You still do more damage on the ground, but that R2 attack is pretty good.

Why? This game hands them out like candy. For fucks sakes, investigations have up to 6 gold rewards now. If you're too lazy to even do that, you can just do steamworks and hold RT for easy cosmic tickets.

There is no excuse to be out of mantles.

It's just cool and you get (Awesome!)s when you do it.

Iceborne has no rare drops

Jumping advancing slash (the midair helicopter move) got its damage buffed in Iceborne. Also, Airborne grants 20% more power on all midair attacks. Sure it's not your best dps option but you're playing insect glaive; you should take advantage of your leaping ability. You can do awesome things like vault over Jho's breath and smash his face in while marking it for the bug simultaneously. You're meant to use airborne attacks opportunistically and get damage in when you otherwise wouldn't.

You don’t need much in the way of skills for IG. Stamina Surge and Airborne are good to have, but perhaps the most important skill to have is Peak Performance ‘cause at the top echeleons of mad skillz IG users are untouchable dodge gods.

Other than that, build around your kinsect. It should be able to make good use of whatever kind of boost your IG gives. The best Kinsect lineages are Grancathar for healing, Cancadaman for paralysis, Carnage Beetle for poison and Pseudocath for blast.

The need to save implies there is scarcity. There is no such thing with steamworks.

The new dive attack is reasonably strong while letting you land and combo out of a vault faster than the other two attacks. In the past, vaulting was a situational thing you could do to dodge and attack at the same time. In World, vaulting was just something you did to hit flying monsters or stay out of the way. In IB, that original fluidity is back.

Everyone was scaring me by saying you couldn't block Shara's sound beams as guard lance but with Health Boost 3, Guard 5, and 790 defense I was able to comfortably survive even the concentrated beam. Just keep trying to walk forward to recover stamina as you're guarding.

You don't need Flinch-free but at level three it negates knockback from any attack that doesn't send you rolling or flying. Sure it's not gonna save your life, but it's nice and if I have space for two points of it on an otherwise spiffy IG set I will consider it

I've never had to run partbreaker, but I use grugsword so hitting the face isn't too hard. If your weapon has the reach for it, you probably won't need that. Remember you can wallbang shara into an enviromental trap (marked by the trap sign on your minimap) and that knocks it down for a meaty chunk of time, opening its face up for lots of damage.
Granted, it can be hard to get Shara to go over there.

Two fundamental things:
You can guard during or after attacks at specific points - after a roundslash from finishing a sword combo or morphing from Axe to Sword or in the startup of a Sword to Axe morph. Guarding this way is more effective, does a small phial explosion if your shield is charged, and you can do an AED out of this counter state unless it was max recoil. Secondly, impact does true/explosive damage and can KO while element adheres to monster hitzones and does not KO.

Basically whenever you morph between sword and axe mode there's brief period where you're guarding. Most useful is sword to axe since you guard basically instantly when you start the morph attack; axe to sword meanwhile guards at the end of the attack, which is less useful.
But what you should be doing is basically sword to fill phials, get the red buff, and then sword while waiting for an opening and axe the shit out of the monster. Sword attack -> Triangle + Circle is really good for use waiting for an opening as you can add another Triangle + Circle at the end for an instant burst.

One very important thing is charging your shield and sword. To power up your shield, start the animation for the amped element discharge (the ultimate big dick axe attack) and while it's winding up hit right trigger to put all your phials into your shield. you get 30 seconds of charge for every phial slotted. Now, your shield blocks better, and your axe does more damage. Most importantly, your amped element discharge is now the Super amped element discharge, which can do true charged slash levels of damage if you land the phial shockwave it emits.
To charge your sword, you first need to charge your shield. Then when you're in the animation for charging your phials, hold Y (or whatever the top face button is for PS4) to charge up a big downward slash that does phial damage and charges your sword. For the next 45 seconds, your sword does phial damage on every attack and gets free Mind's Eye.

I'm probably better using a gun with good pierce because I never bothered hunting tempered monsters all that much in the base game.

Charge the files, go into axe mode, activate the SAED but press the shield button as soon as your character brings the weapon behind them to charge your shield. When your shield is charged it's given the impact or element property of your axe mode depending on which you're using. Meaning the shield bash can contribute to KO damage and the sword will do the same if you attack immediately after a roll dodge. This runs out and how long it lasts is dependent on how many phials you charged into the shield. Another benefit to charging the shield is that it increases its defensive power, especially if you guard point block.

Guard pointing can be done by doing the sword into axe conversion (bear in mind your sword has to enter the shield and be in front of you to work), after a triple slash as said, and I'm fairly certain you can do it converting from axe to sword and shield, but again the shield has to be in front of you to work. While doing it after a triple combo is very useful, the sword into axe conversion is the easiest one to trigger and learn while the other two require timing your attacks to a certain degree.

If I'm at full 200 health with guard 3, blocking the multi-hit beams won't kill me but I'll take more overall damage than if I'd just been hit by the beam raw and immediately knocked down. It was more of an issue learning the fight, where I wasn't just sitting under his face 100% of the time where he can't hit lance with anything at all.

It’s a pretty spicy set bonus for Longsword what with the new iai slash and all. The armor itself also has crit draw, crit element, quick sheath and a bunch of other stuff. It’s one of the best sets for elemental Longsword which is an actual thing now.

Savage axe slash is also done from the windup to Amped (or super amped) element discharge, but it's left trigger instead of right. IMO you should only do it when you know you're about to get a big opening since it's a pretty slow move and it'll drain your phials if you just sit in the mode. Also, you should do savage axe OR SAED but not both, since savage adds very little damage to it, and every phial that's not used in the SAED shockwave is a phial wasted. Of course, if the monster's knocked on its ass and you have like 10 seconds to have your way with their asshole it's fine to go ham and spam every axe move there is.

You can solo every hunt in the game except for a very small number of endgame super bosses that only have multiplayer scaling, they're optional though. For main missions, you can only do co-op after you're seen the cutscene and it turns into a regular hunt.

Yea so do I on Ishvalda. The difference is it gives ishvalda is a decent amount of purple sharpness hits (enough for masters touch to keep it propped up), the grinding mallet gets like 3 purple hits before it's white, 10 more white hits and then you're in fucking blue. So you're either burning a slot for PP, you spend half your fights sharpening, or your damage is trash, which is it? it's all of them isn't it

World is the second easiest game in the series and perfect for a new player that doesn't know MH.

Well it might be stupid, I capped a Scarred YG in my own investigation and yet I don't have an arena quest for it.

You play multiplayer in sessions, which is a fancy word for lobbies. You can be matched to one automatically, create one with its own goals and conditions or join someone else's manually. You and other players can also use an 'SOS flare" during hunts which invites players to join your hunt from any session. You can absolutely solo everything except for a few event monsters designed around multiplayer (technically these are soloable but great time and effort is required)

How long does it take to level these areas up? Played like an hour and a half with other people(in their guiding lands) and I came out and a couple of my areas went up maybe half a level. Came back to say I made a mistake about the sword dealing KO damage. It can, but not immediately after dodging. After you charge your shield and you have phials to charge, charge them but then hit the attack button. THAT's what causes the sword to deal KO damage.

As for Savage Axe Slash I've honestly never even used it despite knowing it's there.
