It's quite nice to have now that I have it, it's a Asus Xonar DSX.

Infact the onboard one is wired to the chipset's PCIe lanes so if you plug your network card to the CPU lanes it'll have less latency.

Not really, they connect to the controller then to the CPU or Chipset, sometimes is though a hacky USB lane (Hi realtek), others directly but rarely through PCIe, intel ones often are but not always, depends how the board design is made too.
Not everything is connected through PCIe.
