That's up to you. From what I understand you simply give the characters a custom range, like the hits only register if their coordinates are within a certain range on the y axis, and you can change the "Z axis" range depending on attack to simulate depth further. The hitboxes work exactly like they do in fighting games, you can even view them in some games. But I haven't made a beat 'em up yet so maybe there's another way to approach the Z axis. It's a shame that this genre is so poorly documented, things like making beat em up AI are very interesting topics to cover, but right now you have to figure it out via experience and trial & error if you're a developer.

It dawned on me how much this is actually designed around MP. The enemies all having identical wake-up timers and being easily herded due to their dumb AI makes SP boring as shit, but in MP this doesn't happen because the two players makes the AI behave far more unpredictably and getting enemies all in one spot a lot harder.
It's still got issues like the retarded throw system and the enemy dizzy whiffing and the entire story but playing in MP actually makes it enjoyable. Which also then really begs the question of why the fuck there's no online co-op built in.

I like Misako more but Kyoko's light and fun personality making her far more popular, she already have much more fanart. I also like Kyoko's attack animations more.

I wonder if SP could be fixed with simple AI tweaks like changing getup times and varying aggression/spacing, or if it needs some new enemy types that are better differentiated from the stock we have right now. Because most of the enemies right now are kind of pedestrian for a beat em up. A couple characters have grenades or other projectiles, and a few have proper dodges, but ultimately everybody's gameplan is just to walk up into your face and punch you a few times while you're stuck in a non-invincible throw or something. And that only contributes to the herding problem.

Kinda sucks that Wavers only spawn by default in maybe one or two areas, because they have a bit of that speed, spacing, and aggressiveness that's lacking otherwise.

I was a pretty adamant defender of Underground but, yea, that enemy AI just grinds momentum to a stop. It's a game that advertised all these cool combos you can pull off and all the enemies always either kite you, block instantly and randomly rush at you from behind when you're attacking someone.
Also, I don't know what happened but clearly shit fell to pieces in the last month of development and got worse after release, especially with whatever deal fell through with their music team

I was playing this game and it's very strange. It seems like it's 90% parodying shit like Battletoads (arcade), TMNT, Moo Mesa (Playable animal is even a bara bull) etc. But then there's a handful of big tittied anime girls thrown in. Feels like two people had very different priorities when this game was being made.

I was thinking more that, it starts off at the same time as the beginning of the Kyouko and Misako story because to show that Hasabe and Mami actually ARE decent people, it was THEM who sent the text to Kyouku(Kyouko is pretty dumb, so she probably gave her number to them at some point) so that Kunio and Riki could have a nice day out. The problem is that Hasabe and Mami underestimate just how tough Kyouko and Misako are.

Honestly, I got that feeling too. It genuinely felt like someone was just aping River City Ransom and a bunch of other arcade beat 'em ups without really understanding or loving the genre. Honestly, the reason I liked it as much as I did is simply because they aped it really well. It captures a lot of the flaws of the old games, but they managed to capture the good parts too just by getting everything wholesale.

I think that's why there are large parts of the writing that feel really dated, or as the cool kids call it, "cringe". Like the portion where the crane driver dropped his keys, and "Wooooooo there's some whacky zombies down there! You better beat them up!", which is ill fitting and comes off as a disingenuous love of anime. Kinda like a western-made "anime" web comic from the mid 2000s.

It kind of bugs me that you don't have one of those health-draining emergency moves that gets everyone off you if you're surrounded or getting combo'd. I assume this was the case in other Kunio games though?

The down+B spin moves you do get have a somewhat long startup time and don't seem to be invincible.

Oh, I know what you're talking about. Usually they're called "desperation attacks" in other beat 'em ups. Yeah, Kunio-kun series doesn't have those as far as I'm aware. But they also break a lot of traditional beat 'em up tropes to begin with anyways.

One biggest flaws with the way the game is designed is that all of the entrances require you to press X to use them, but that also happens to be the game's basic attack button. So anytime you zone in, if you start pressing X to combo an enemy who spawns right next to the door you'll find yourself being sent to the area you were just at. This is a very, very, very basic game design element that I'm surprised wasn't fixed in even the alpha. Even something as simple as mapping the command to another button would make combat less of a problem as you now have to run away from the area's entrance before you can start fighting every time.

Really gives the impression that the game's playtesters were asleep at the wheel while the VA's were being sucked off.
