Is it really that bad? I got into Souls game kinda late, played Bloodborne, DS1 and 3, but skip 2 because everyone said it suck
Is it really that bad? I got into Souls game kinda late, played Bloodborne, DS1 and 3...
please tell me you're joking
It's not bad at all, at worst it's not as good as the rest.
It's really not. Make sure you play SotFS though. Some of the areas a pretty good, though some are also terrible. The DLCs are probably the best part of this game. Multiplayer is better than the first, lots more weapon and armour variety. Movement feels worse?
It's not as bad as Yea Forums makes it out to be. It's only very slightly worse than PtD, which actually means it's pretty good.
It's an amateurishly made game cobbled together out of assets that don't feel like they belong together, has unfinished areas and audiovisual issues up the wazoo, a ridiculous amount of item descriptions that feature "of unknown origin", some nonsensical translations, NPCs and monsters that just scream "I once served a different function during the alpha build" and it tries to hide its issues behind an overabundance of items and equipment of varying design quality.
Sure, it has some decent ideas here and there like bonfire ascetics but they're wasted on a game like this.
It sucked at launch because of poorly tuned environments (Shrine of amana was fucking agonizing to get through), SotFS improved it quite a bit.
It's still a good game, quite easily in top 10 of 2014. The biggest let down was the graphics, which SotFS didn't fix and even modding the game still doesn't get it anywhere near what it what meant to look like. Yes graphics was never a big deal for souls games but so much of the atmosphere was lost.
Also personally I found myself quite let down by the tone not being darker, the initial trailers and dialogue with the grannys made it out like it was going to be turbo depressive journey but it wasn't really.
Scholars faults massively outweigh the positives. With the DLC being unchanged between the two, I would wholeheartedly recommend Vanilla with DLC over Scholar.

It's well known they had to scuttle the original concept for the game partway through development. The trailers probably hinted at a lot of things that never ended up happening.
The DLCs are very good
they straight up switched directors for this game and rebooted development
The generall commentary I see regarding Dark Souls 2 is that it has superior mechanics to 1, but inferior level and boss design. I'm generally inclined to agree with that assessment, I even prefer DS2's mechanics to 3's in some ways (powerstance and functional poise come to mind), and I like how it has qute a few interesting secrets hidden away in the game world. However, in a game like Dark Souls, issues with bosses and level design are pretty impossible to ignore. Many of the areas are just annoying to traverse and full of obnoxious traps, and there are far too many bosses that are just gank-squads of otherwise unimpressive enemies. Then you have bosses that I swear are just plain broken like gluttonous demon, and areas that barely have any exploration at all like Shrine of Amana. Overall, I feel Dark Souls 2 has a worse reputation than it truely deserves, because it is a lot of fun, but there's no denying that it's a deeply flawed game.
yes, it was so bad that 3 ignored everything about it
SoTFS is better than the original release simply because it removes well over half the bullshit enemy hordes hidden around corners and in little alcoves that would jump out and kill you without an opportunity to react.
Not if you have taste and can appreciate hîgh ărţ
Right well the people who aren't shit at videogames should go for Vanilla
I was in the same situation as you. Played all the Soulsborne games and Sekiro and only then gave DS2 a chance. I thought it was just expectations on other peoples part and since mine would be low I still might enjoy it.
I didn't, I beat it and while that is something. It might be in the top 5 worst games I ever finished.
It's the worst souls game but if you really like the others then you should probably play it anyway.
It's got the most content out of them all. Unfortunately you can count the number of good bosses on one hand, it's really one of those quantity > quality games
People say it sucks because
>muh 8 axis movement which doesn't change anything
>muh trash bosses which aren't worse than the ones in DS1 on average
>muh adaptability because I can't use dodges for anything but rolling through attacks
>muh repeated textures
>muh hitboxes because I can't roll
>muh lava castle in the skies
Play it and make your own opinion. Just remember that it's a slower and more deliberate game than the others.
The world wasn't designed as well as DS1, but the mechanics were interesting. I was far more disappointed by DS3 than 2. At least you could play multiple playthroughs and through NG+ and beyond without getting bored, which is more than I can say for DS3. Equipment and build variety was far more interesting, too.
Dark Souls II:
>Hey, what if instead of interesting boss design, we just added adds to every fucking encounter and called it a day?
You did the right thing skipping it. It's garbage.
You're not missing much. If you absolutely need your souls fix, give it a try. The DLCs are the best parts.
>>>/global/rules/2
>he listened to Yea Forums
>he actually did it
DS2 is the best in the series. Even Resetera agrees.
This is what believing in memes looks like.
>skipped 2 because everyone said it sucks
Only DS3fags hate it.
I personally really enjoy it. It's got its strengths over the other entries in the series but also got its fair share of weaknesses. Pretty flawed but worth at least a play through if you're curious and want more Souls.
go with a spear/halberd or a greataxe or great curved sword for a decent time
Haha yeah bro, he should have listened to you instead!
No he shouldn't and that's my point.
It's a bit too easy but its still my favorite. I wish some of the areas weren't so god damn ugly.
it's not like it's an unplayable disaster, but the fact that it feels like a procession of repurposed assets breaks your immersion enough that you begin to realise how annoying/tedious these games are without a solid backdrop of atmosphere and environmental storytelling.
there's still enough item lore and shit that it keeps the wiki people busy debating over theories but none of it really feels meaningful while you're actually playing
Dark Souls 2 feels like the only Souls game I could still go back to and enjoy playing. I already played 3 to death and playing 1 again with remastered was a huge disappointment and made me reevaluate how much I like the game.
I've done a bunch of playthroughs of 2 in the past and they always felt fresh.
playing DS1 remastered feels like conducting an autopsy on the game, everything looks so sparse and exposed in 1080p with flat lighting
