You want to know why people hate Heller? It's not just because he's black. It's because he acts like a nigger. He continues to believe he is righteous and doing the right thing even while he is butchering innocent people, US Marines, and Blackwatch alike. He continues to hate Mercer and pretend like Mercer is so much worse than he is even though they do the exact same shit for pretty much the exact same reasons.

Mercer never pretended to be the good guy. That's what sets them apart as characters, as non-human virus colony organisms that feast on the flesh and minds of human beings. It ruins the whole fucking concept at a root level and even if Heller were a white guy he still just wouldn't work. The fact that he's black just ties the whole thing up with a pretty bow that no one wants to unwrap. Heller himself, as a whole, ruined Prototype 2.

Then he got involved with some girl he fell in love with and tried to help her father with his organized crime problems. Basically he destroys the whole syndicate but then the woman betrays him and shoots him because she's unaware of his true nature, so he goes full Shoggoth on her and loses faith in humanity. That's between the two games by the way.

So in the second game Mercer released the virus in New York again because he's sick and tired of humanity and wants to kill or forcefully evolve those he deems worthy. He basically becomes Wesker. So he turns Heller into a virus monster like him and then Heller rips off Mercer's arms and eats him and that's the end of the game. Heller doesn't eat Mercer's arms by the way, he just throws them aside. I guess they forgot he regenerated himself from a tiny bitch of flesh splattered on the inside of a helicopter that got nuked at the end of the first game.
