I don't know that you would actually need to know much. Most characters aren't really defined by their backstory too much and the main plot had barely kicked off by that point. They just fucked up some dark guilds before that point. By the time they finally run into the dark mage who is kind of at the root of everything, a huge fuck-off dragon appears and almost fucks everyone up. They dodge the fight by skipping a few years into the future through the power of friendship.
Few people who were left to live out those years from the guild were kind of in trouble since all the competent people were gone from their guild. But then everyone returned and I guess the game is maybe about the guild rebuilding their reputation?
Thinking about it, it might be a decent time to set something completely original in. Unless they really just want to follow the story, then I guess the entire game's a tournament(?)

A.) FT was the mags most popular manga and there was a demand for more.
B.) Hiro wanted full creative control of Eden's Zero so he didn't have to deal with any bullshit like Lisanna again.
He made an outline of a plot and gave it to another mangaka so he could work on Eden's Zero with the go-ahead to just go full hog with it.

Anime ran ahead of the manga for a while in Edolas, Lisanna was meant to say dead but the anime brought her back.
Due to some executive meddling she was brought back in the manga too, something about her being popular.
But Hiro had no plan for her at all, so she ended up just staying back at the bar for the rest of the series.

If you enjoy Mashima's work, then Eden's Zero is basically Fairy Tail in space but with better characters/story/setting. I'm not a huge fan of the author but I am enjoying Eden's Zero much more than I ever enjoyed Fairy Tail. I think Mashima sticking to a smaller cast and a more focused story has been working really well for his new series.

The general concept of the setting is that there are Mages and they specialize in different types of magic. You have basic stuff like controlling a certain elements, summoning, etc. And then you have more creative stuff like being able to give words physical properties, changing into monsters, and literally causing shit to explode just by coming into contact with it. The different types of magic have always been one of the series strong points and led to interesting fights earlier on before the power of friendship started to get phoned into everything.

FT has a couple of picks but the biggest one is Gajeel.
First arc he appears in he brutalises three members of the guild, spends the rest of the story making up for it and eventually gets the girl he beat down pregnant.
But he never really loses the edge entirely.

Gajeel is the closest to Vegeta in the sense that he started off as a major antagonist and then eventually joined the good guys. The difference between him and Vegeta though is that he actually becomes a pretty decent person once he's not a bad guy anymore and regularly goes along with the goofy antics of the others.
The other character would be Laxus. He's the son of the guildmaster and had an arc where he was going to destroy the guild to prove he was the most powerful and was obsessed with the strength. He becomes a good guy later too though.
Both are pretty cool as far as powers go and will most likely be playable.

Eden only has consistency for it imo. I have seen nothing on the tier of risks and themes present in Rave. Eden seems to play it really safe and I will give it that it might end up better than FT but no where near Rave unless Mashima pulls a fast one.

I'm cautiously optimistic about this game. Fairy Tail is kind of hot garbage but my inner high school weeb is interested. It helps that I just stopped watching after the Grand Magic Games/Future Rogue so this game looks like it'll be covering things I know about for the most part.
Plus, Fairy Tail seems like it'd work better as a game than an anime/manga. That and I want more game developers to adapt anime as RPGs rather than shitty arena fighters.

Covers about a third of the story and passes the vidya by just a bit, but otherwise its okay.
Honestly read the manga though, the final battle is pretty damn good.

An adaptation isn't always a good representation of a work you know.
Rave was a really solid series. It was a pretty basic Fantasy/Adventure story all the way through, but it played everything straight and pulled off the standard story beats competently. The core cast had a strong focus and everyone got a moment to shine. There were very few straight up asspulls too and the fights were generally well done. You can tell that Mashima had genuine passion for it the whole way through. Early Fairy Tail felt the same but after the Edolas Arc it felt like he was just checking boxes.
Also, Ten Commandments is still one of the coolest anime swords ever.

Agreed, the Decalogue is a cool sword, so cool the main villains straight ripped it off.
I really liked the first run of the anime. The OST was god tier, everything was bright, and they would elaborate on the fights to expand them in a good way. The 2014 run didn't have the old music, the colors were more muted, everything was just 1-to-1 with the manga panels, and it just didn't have the same energy.

I haven't seen the Rave anime outside of a few episodes when the dubbed aired on Toonami. But an anime adaption being different from the manga isn't exactly a rare occurrence, especially if they try to adapt something that's still on-going. Just from the few episodes I saw, they dragged out when Haru first met Ellie with a bunch of filler that didn't really serve to do anything but pad time for whatever reason.
I do remember the English opening being super cheesy and catchy though.
