For what it was, there was an attempt to make the stories and characters human in some ways.
The unexpected breakdowns, like this scene with Cole.
The high energy somehow always positive guy suddenly finds an artifact that reminds him of a life that is probably completely alien to him now.

The books are pretty good about this. They really hammer home that the COG is on the edge. They have baby farms, they almost starve civilians to ensure Gears get a full calorie load and they keep soldiers on the line until they break and then keep them there until they die. Cole writes letters to his momma who died during E-day.

It was interesting to see a sci-fi world that had near constant war being a normal situation and this new threat absolutely pushing such a society to its complete edge.

Another interesting note about the world is that our heroes such as Marcus and Dom are not some poor schlubs who signed up for a job.
They appear to have come from or lived in quite a wealthy situation. Very comfy. When you visit their respective houses they are huge mansions.
And you see some documents in the secret government tornado base that were showing concerns on what to do with rising populations as during times of peace the birth rates outpaced the death rates which was seen as an economic destabilizing concern.
So that made me think that maybe they aren't wealthy there just is enough stuff to go around. Why not have a huge estate of you don't have to think about cramming 40 families in a one acre lot since populations aren't getting big enough for that situation.

Dom was not millionaire but became close to Marcus when Marcus was bullied in the school and Dom stood for him.

That was a point of frustration for me for years, until Marcus told Kait to go to the New Hope Research Facility in 5, and I was like "Oh shit, I think they're actually going to explain what's been going on", and they totally did. Only took them six games and thirteen years, but they finally explained where the Locust game from.

Sons and daughters from the people who were in contact with imulsion for extended periods of time and in great quantity. They developed a sickness that were mutating them and the higher ups tell them that is just a sickness and send them to Black Sites, where experiences are made on them.
Some of these subjects escape into the mountains that are connected with the Hive, a massive web of tunnels bellow Sera and procreate creating the Locusts.
They develop a culture of there own and are happy being moles.
But the imulsion start to fuck with them creating Lambents, crazy Locusts and they enter in a civil war then at large scale war. Familiar, isn't it?
With nowhere to run but up, they prepare and come out to "reclaim what are theirs".
I didn't played 5, don't know if they retconned some or all of this.

2 and 3 still look good, but I do hope they eventually give them the same visual treatment they did for 1.

Probably they would find Earth and be the oposite of your idea.
It was reworked because it was too much sci-fi.

I don't think that's quite right, you invade Nexus in 2 and Baird or somebody specifically calls out how you don't see any little locust families running around - everybody's an adult or some creature (like bloodmounts) as far as they can tell. There's some forum post out there that puts all the pieces together, and it's pretty heavily hinted that locust troops are "processed" humans in some capacity, which is part of the reason they could destroy like 2/3 of humanity on E-Day and take 15 years finishing them off the rest of the way - they're having trouble replenishing their own forces since you can't just pluck humans off the street anymore.

Idk if the swarm plays by the same rules or not, but locust were never really able to reproduce conventionally.

And the kicker is they think that he has equal story relevance to JD at the end when you have to pick who gets killed. The pure delusion that you would pick Del because he didn't get tossed under a bus for an Act by the writers to justify the 'choice' at the end is laughable.

"Processing" was just torturing them into being docile slaves like Dom's wife. It started out as some dumb quote, but they do reproduce by chaining down Berserkers.

Seems the game prefers you save JD since there's the tension between him and Baird that gies unresolved if he dies, plus the line from Fahz when he drives up calling back to the Snatcher scene on the rocket.

Beat all gears except Judgement, was just hoping to have a great sequence at hope's facility in 5.
And oh fuck it was cool.
The fact that during campaign, I was playing Del, and my buddy played kait,he did not told me shit about the flashback and all of this.
Like, I just saw him a couple of time getting headache, asking if he was having things, he didn't told me anything, just saying "Don't know, she's holding her head or something."
When the revelation came in the lab, and he followed by explaining the "controlling the hive and stuff". Fuck that was über cool.
The fight against the matriarch in the lab was great, getting memories back from Gears 1 and the berzerker. Also, in Hope, having the Gears 2 theme playing in the background was kino as fuck.
It was really one of the great part of this series, but then, "EYH, DESERT WITH BAD RUSSIANS ACCENT, YOU KNOW, THE PENDULUM WAR OR ELSE, YEAH, WE'RE HERE".
I did not give a fuck about this, stopped here for the moment.
Next part of the story gets better than the desert and russian space shit or meh tier ?
