A lot of adults have become very attached to the series and as such are willing to ignore how much of a dumpster fire the game is.

Unlike playstation right now or to a lesser extent Xbox back in the day rather than trying to aim at just one specific audience Nintendo aims to have something for everybody on their console for the widest possible audience.
