you have to be slightly insane to want to live on a magical mountain that makes you face your inner darkness personified

the first level of the game is an abandoned city at the base of the mountain, as the game explains that a tourism company sponsored the construction of the city and hotel to prompt revenue, but then everyone fucked off when they realized what the magic mountain does and didn't want to live there. by the time madeline arrives, the only residents are a crazy old lady and the obsessive ghost owner of the run-down hotel who refuses to pass on

once madeline reaches the top of the mountain she has new resolve to improve, and when she returns a year later cause she liked the climb so much she's addressed a lot of her inner issues and the mountain has a much harder time separating her from her shadow self

she had a bitch of a time climbing the mountain the first time, but then on her descent realized that it was actually pretty fun, so after going home and living her life for a year she returns on vacation again to climb it again, seeking to delve into the deepest depths of the mountain. that's chapter 8.

in chapter 9, which is much much later, the old lady dies, and madeline was unable to handle the grief and so blocked it out and didnt even attend the funeral. she returns to climb again and look for the old lady's shadow to try and save her, and badeline appears and tells her shes in denial and won't help her, and so fucks off. chapter 9 is thus madeline working through her grief about the death of a friend as she climbs the moon above the mountain
