the only lore is that the nightmare is the typhon's collective response to you being a threat. other than that its a loot pinata for crafting. on my human playthrough i got sick of fighting it and just locked myself in an office and waited out the time because i didn't feel like walking to a fabricator to make more ammo. on my alien playthrough i obliterated it every time since you get unlimited mana from the water fountain quest.
