Do zoomers even watch /m/echa or toku?

I know Japanese kids think mecha is for old guys, but I really don’t know about Toku.

>I know Japanese kids think mecha is for old guys
Fuck, in that case i really hope Toho doesn't aim the next set of Godzilla films for kids, i really want a new Mechagodzilla one

modern weebs can't handle patlabor because all they like now is over the top gurren knockoffs or shows where characters cry for 24 episodes and then it ends.

Quick search of the latest anime chart showed no mecha but I'm out of touch with the trends anyway.

Often, why?

I'm pretty out of the loop myself but I just watch shows toku so no surprise I guess

There's a new Gundam coming october, but it's yet another web gunpla show so i can't blame you i you don't count it

Why did Kanuka, being half japanese, looks and behaves more like an authentic japanese person than the rest of the team, who were actually born in Japan?

Overcompensation for failing hard at being american

her accent makes me of a chink speaking japanese. it's kinda cute.

really sad, because Patlabor is so good. it achieves being badass and comfy at the same time

Fuck, I wasnt expecting that.

She loves her grandma who is Japanese. I believe she grew up in Hawaii too, so she's used to a variety of Asian mannerisms. She may even be her only remaining relative. Don't forget she's also truly elite and speaks fluent Japanese. However, there's hints throughout the series that part of the reason she was sent to work in Japan was because she didn't get along too well with the rest of her team in the US.

By the way, we all agree the episode revolving around Chinese takeout was the best, right?

The newest Patlabor production was the live action wasn't it? As in, it was a true sequel and also concluded Noa and Azuma's relationship?
Heard it was good.

actually, isn't she hawaiian?

She's of mixed decent, yes.

He nails the moving target training in the second movie like a badass

Ohh, didn't have this one saved. Man what was up with Japan and skis in the 90s.

That's a good one too, but my favorites are the two parter Eve's Shudder and Trap. Excellent exploration of the feelings of those whose loved ones serve as well as giving Kanuka a lot of real vulnerability and humanization.

I hated both of the labor pilots. Why were the two most incompetent people on the team put in charge of piloting multi billion dollar mechs? Fucking retarded.

Attached: kanuka greatest hero.jpg (952x1432, 187K)

patlabor is weird for me. I REALLY loved the OVAs but the tv show has such an odd sense of humor and I can't stand it.

Because Azuma knew how badly Noa wanted to pilot it.
Yamazaki was too big.
Kanuka was only temporary.
Shinshi cared too much about his wife.

it's a lot like GitS in that the core setting is really good but it's up to whoever is in charge where they go with it
I might have to read the manga one of these days

Patlabor was fucking kino, man.

Attached: raise some hell.webm (640x480, 2.62M)

Goto was the best character. Surrounded by retards and doesn't give a shit.

why were they the only options though? out of a force as big as the japanese police, they had a bunch of a third stringers in charge of the huge billion dollar mechs?

No, because Mecha is actually masculine.

i do

Bipedal mechs are definitely not something I'd want cops to have.

>they had a bunch of a third stringers in charge of the huge billion dollar mechs?

You really overestimate how much it costs to build an Ingram. And are an idiot. These aren't Gundams. The Ingram is a great labor but it's main job is to look cool. Seriously. They flat out say as much. The helldivers and brockens probably cost way more. Also Asuma's Dad's company made the fucking things. Try paying attention.

He was a little too Mary Sue for me. The stupid shit he did never bit him in the ass directly.

The series makes it very apparent that the Labor force wasn't respected to begin with (waste of taxpayer money, etc.), and all the competent people were a part of SV1 already.

why the fuck is this thread on Yea Forums.

YEAH BUT WHAT ABOUT CONSTRUCTION WORKERS :D

ESPECIALLY THE DRUNK ONES

>the first three seconds of that webm where she just rollerskates behind the guy

Love this scene.

No they don't. They need the mechs to put the fear into a drunk fork truck driver. They're not actually supposed to fight. It's why they're always getting trouble.

A Yamato Nadeshiko doesn't need to be Japanese to have Japanese qualities.
The series in general was pretty good at subverting stereotypes early on.

kinda surprised this hasn't been posted

Didn't it have something to do with the pilot data?
Besides, SV1 were actually competent so they didn't need the latest tech.

Because that would put tremendous strain on the joins. The MO disks record pilot data and help the machine program ease of motion better. If you have 5 pilots on one mech it just puts stress on the mech and it will break down. They explain this quite clearly. Pay attention, you retard.

i didn't even bother with the current generation

Fuck off stupid japs, if you want to do it, do it right

Why did Oota always got the best girls?

They're cops. Cops probably wouldn't have long hair.

When overwatch was first released I was dropped into a match that was pretty much hopeless from my side. Their team actually had us boxed into the spawn my team was so terrible.

I switch to the ninja guy and just snuck around them to the final capture point. I guess they didn't take it seriously or were just too far away because I was able to win the game without attacking anyone. It was a great feeling seeing their entire squad run into visible range right as I finished capping the point.

Attached: cyg4zre5w2f31.jpg (614x768, 86K)

Why? I imagine there's a lot of regulations but long hair for woman probably wouldn't be one of them. Toss it in a bun or pony tail maybe?

I just finished the TV series and I don't know why people shit on it so much. The pacing is a little more relaxed with more of a 'slice of life' tone but I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing.

Watch Active Raid.

Is that soulless eyesore you posted supposed to entice anyone?

I have some complaints with the TV series, more specifically Kumagami. They sent Kanuka home way to soon. But on the whole I liked a lot. I put a lot of the blame on people who think they need to binge watch everything, so a lot of the more repatative elements become way more obvious.

I burnt myself out on the ova and movies by the time I got to the tv series. I need to go back and finish it.

Based Japs dabbing on (((americans)))

Replacing a good character with a total non-entity was a weird choice. I was expecting them to bring Kanuka back, but when they finally did it was only for 1 episode plus a little cameo.

The only good thing about Kumagami was she reigned in Ota's retardation a little.

why are you so desperate for meaning that you have to do this to people who don't like the same shows as you

Man if you think this was boring, I'd hate to see you try something like Gasaraki

I liked gasaraki and my favorite movie of all time is over 4 hours long and I watch it regularly all in one sitting. patlabor TV is just really boring and oddly paced

Toku is more for moms now than anyone. The fan events for some Kamen Rider events are like 80% women.

alright dude, but I think someone else already said it here. Patlabor is not your average mecha anime when everything is big and important. they are just common people, who have access to giant robots. Isn't kinda great Patlabor be its own thing? It's almost 30 years and they haven't nailed a copy of this type of show yet.

I said this like 20 times in the thread already. I adore the concept of patlabor and I enjoyed the movies and OVAs immensely, enough for them to rank very high among my favorites. the format and the concept of a bureaucratic, character-focused, semi realistic approach to mecha isn't the problem, the tv show being poorly constructed is the problem

Why is the helo flying so close you could literally throw a rock at it?

>oddly paced
I saw it mentioned in another post gere, but you guys are aware it's very much a type of cartoon like Ed, Edd n Eddy or the Ashnime where it's mostly focused on the individual episodes written by different writers as opposed to truly caring about some overarching grand narrative, right?

>it's mostly focused on the individual episodes written by different writers as opposed to truly caring about some overarching grand narrative
completely aware of this. the OVA was the exact same way. Does not excuse its flaws at all.

I'm with you about the OVAs being far more substantial, but it's really just a difference in format. You get like 2 or 3 OVAs and everyone is putting in their utmost versus you get like 10 episodes and try random ideas you had in half of them.

Attached: 1108230052627.jpg (959x720, 92K)

I totally agree on that front, but as a consumer what matters to me is the final product. I'm no stranger to long-form shows in anime or otherwise, but the TV show was simply so variable in quality both in writing and visuals that I didn't want to finish it.

I respect that. I think you get the most out of Patlabor TV if you really enjoy the slightly more wacky setting. I watched it before the OVAs so that helps too. That said I think it's still worth it for a fan of the franchise to finish, even knowing you won't love even half of it. Ironically I think it's part of its charm though. It's like you don't know what kind of episode you're going to get.
I recommend keeping track of the ones you do like though so you can just as easily rewatch only those ones. It definitely does have some gems in there.

>even knowing you won't love even half of it
I know this feeling, the vampire princess miyu TV show was like half and half on good episodes
I'll give it another go after I finish outlaw star

Grandbelm is fucking kino and is airing this season.

It's funny because the guy also has a huge case of oneitis with shinobu

>how the fuck did you boomers not get tired of this shit
Serious answer: they did. That's why most 90s anime was goofy fantasy.

Anime burned out on mecha/scifi in the 80s and everything afterwards until the 2000s was more or less taking the piss and parodying it

You'd best not be talking shit about Active Raid.

Attached: [HorribleSubs] Active Raid S2 - 07 [720p].mkv_snapshot_14.22_[2016.09.05_02.00.37].jpg (1280x720, 85K)

didn't he get to do something really cool in one of the movies?

He actually goes get to shine every now and again. In the OVA he's actually the one to stop the bad guy and in the OVAs and in the Movie he gets a sweet ass tank rifle.

Really? I haven't watched past that episode. I think it's 18 but I'm not sure.

That's episode 14. Goto's relationship with Shinobu doesn't show up too often so I couldn't really point out many stand out episodes but I think a lot of it also Mamoru Oshi, who is, for some reason, super in love with her too. To the point where he made the second movie basically all about her.

They just made a live action tv show a couple of years ago

The interesting thing about Rally's design is that she's not cute, nor sexy, nor cool, but at the very midpoint of all those traits.

Its gone a bit more micro than macro, but it looks like unless we build interference towers everywhere drones are going to be the big "future is now" thing. Alternatively, AI gets stacked into drones BECAUSE of interference and then we really are there.

How is the zeiram anime? I've only seen the two live action movies.

Because giant robots are awesome. What are you, some kind of faggot?

What's this hairstyle called? The Major has it too.

Attached: 2345234523.png (540x277, 79K)

reverse bob
has it too

Because a story having giant robots in it doesn't really tell you what kind of story it's actually going to be.
By comparison if you have an isekai harem LN adaptation you know EXACTLY what kind of story it's going to be.

Crab tanks were here, bipedal mechs are for sissy girls.

Did those sluts get a time machine?

Are there any other mecha anime out there with the same feel as Patlabor?

Attached: 077.jpg (1280x1766, 377K)

Depends, we talking the movies like your picture or the show? Wildly different feel between them.

Not him but both, doesn't even have to be mecha. I just need something good to watch.

Attached: 1546289869973.gif (500x344, 2.85M)

I confess to being a bit biased as it was my first real anime but it's also still one of my favorites that I rewatch regularly. If you liked the movies you should like the anime. The design of the world is great.

You'd be amazed at how much they get around. They've shown up in everything to Uresei Yatsura to Star Trek the next Generation (kinda)

wut?

Either desu, I really like the concept of a "realistic" mecha series set in the modern day world but I also liked the fun quirky elements that the TV show had with the character development and slice of life stuff.

Attached: 038.jpg (1280x1766, 334K)

They don't physically show up but a lot of background text and signs make direct mention of them. It's just the producers being cheeky. But it happens a lot.

Frankly it does explain a lot.

The one about the therapy unit makes me giggle the most.

I disagree. I fucking loved the TV show as much as i loved the OVAs.

Goddamn, i love these two together.

Yeah, they're really nice friends

>why is the patlabor tv series so boring?
Because you expected it to be another TTGL with nonstop action and friendship moralfaggotry for underages.

And the second one

not the second one

Maybe Deunan in the Appleseed OVA.

Reminder there exists an Eroge that is a parody mash-up of Patlabor and Nadesico.

Patlabor 2 and GitS are like sister movies. And if you dislike the more serious tone, get fucked.

They even feel like taking place in the same universe

That's just Oshii's Hong Kong boner.

Pretending to like a boring cartoon with a story ripped straight from a bottom shelf spy novel a baby boomer would buy at the airport doesn't make you look smart.

Okay? I don't "pretend" to enjoy movies to make myself look smart. That's a very idiotic reason to come up with why someone would watch a film.

Always the second one.

I want anime to be good again

GiTS 1&2 and Patlabor 1&2 both feature the art work of Hiromasa Ogura, so that's probably why.

Attached: 043.jpg (1280x1762, 276K)

>Copy and pasted from a previous thread, so forgive me if it's not 1 to 1
I initially want to say "fuck you, it's fun", but I don't think that really articulates why I prefer Patlabor TV over the OVA or Movies.
The first movie is a masterpiece. Brilliant animation, great story, with good pacing and suspense, with a fantastic action payoff at the end. However, I think the story is more of an focus on the genius of the world of patlabor than the actual characters. The driving force of the plot in the first movie was in fact, the following of the footsteps of a dead guy.
Patlabor 2 was a decent movie with a lot of drama and care put into the sociopolitical plot and cloak and dagger intrigue, but in the end, didn't feel much like a true Patlabor movie.
I didn't watch the third movie.
When I first watched the OVA's the first thing I thought as I watched was how tightly written each episode was and how nice the animation looked. It truly looked like a lot of time and love was given to each episode for them to shine, however, I believe the moments I loved the most weren't from those OVA's.
I loved most was the team cop element of Patlabor and the mecha part was simply an added bonus. The characters were what made the show for me and I got more truly fun moments during the course of the show than during the OVA since those were so plot focused.
I loved it when Ohta strapped a Labor Gun on the side of his car and then it actually helped out Noa in the fight.
I loved it when Goto was being harassed by his longtime former associate who still held a grudge against him, but despite everyone's best interest couldn't psych him into letting him help.
I loved it when the team went into the sewers in search of the thief and how they acted scared and psyched out about a rumor of an alligator down there.
I loved the episode where the entire base was starving and the restaurant wouldn't deliver the food they ordered

Time where there was a patlabor in the movie
0:00:00-0:10:52, 1:12:52-1:13:18 (the scene of them getting destroyed), 1:38:45-1:45:57
That's about 18 minutes where Patlabors actually mattered. During the course of the entire rest of the movie was spent on the aspects of the military cabal hiding in the shadows. Unlike Patlabor 1, the plot did not revolve or involve the labors in any shape or form. The only relevance this had on anything was that Goto was main character in all this while it happened, and we barely got to see the rest of the crew, which was the five minutes after the opening credits and the action scene at the beginning. At least in the OVA, everyone got something to do, but here they all got shoved into the background. I loved it when Ohta commandeered the training labor at the military academy and used that machine gun from the military to resist, but missed nearly every shot.

Attached: Patlabor the Movie 2 alt.jpg (1100x500, 348K)

The point of it all is that Patlabor is a series that revolves around
A the police
and
B the Patlabor
Goto was removed from the police station for nearly every scene and the girl who cannot stop cucking him. Everything was about the JSDF. Not partially with some whacky rogue patlabor, no just political maneuvering by some nobody that no one's heard of before.
Police are involved only at the climax when the writer remembered that this is a dime pulp about secret organizations in Japan, but based on a fucking show with an actual cast

Patlabor Movie 1 did it best. There was a seroius tone. Mystery suspence. Police crew investigating. AND FUCKING PATLABORS.
So if you want to watch something GitS-like. Then fucking watch GitS

A new one is in development but there's no known info about it. For all we know it might have the same main cast that one short from a year or so back had (basically gender-swapped Noa, Asuma and Goto)

I feel like the TV series helped me appreciate the movies more if anything, 90% of the characterisation comes from the TV series

Unironically kino, never get tired of watching this

Everyone watched the The New OVA (aka 2nd season) right?

Attached: harrison ford.png (862x647, 485K)

Apparently it was the other way around in the manga (that still has no english scans last I checked)? As in Kumagami was the one who was there from the start with Kanuka coming in later

>oddly paced
It's just an episodic slice-of-life, it's about as "oddly paced" as The Simpsons is. I can get not caring for it but that's the weirdest complaint I've ever seen anyone make about it.

It was phenominal with the exception of the sea monster. Really felt out of place for the whole thing in relation to the movies, but felt alright if you consider only the TV show. Loved the spooky episode.

I thought the movies were both great but I couldn't stand the first episode of early days, is it still worth giving another shot?

Of course.

Attached: kaida_yuuji mecha patlabor ultraman.jpg (2273x3211, 2.49M)

odd pacing in each individual episode, from scene to scene. not the pacing of the series as a whole.

Which makes no sense. Every other Patlabor feels like it takes place in a post-modern Japan.
Patlabor 2 feels like it takes place in a dystopian future Hong Kong during wartime.

What was up with Patlabor Reboot?

They put out one seven-minute teaser episode and then did nothing else with it?

Attached: Patlabor_Reboot-582ad8ac9f122.jpg (1920x1080, 270K)

Might be a teaser for that new series that's supposed to be coming out next year.

That's understandable. All that episode was for was to establish character. If you've already watched the TV show, you-
Wait did you say you quit on the OVA? Like you watched the movies, but not the shows first? Why would you do that?
Some episodes were definitely better then others. It happens.

I still remember the porn ban episode pretty vividly. The humor was pretty hit-or-miss but when it did hit it was way funnier than most comedy anime. Should give this a rewatch one of these days.

How similar is Astral Chain to this? I know nothing about that game beyond how people are describing it

Not even remotely. Patlabor is basically as real life as it gets with the occasional robot squabble.

Nothing aside from being about the futuristic cops

Really? Because when I check my torrents I downloaded it 1013 days and 12 hours ago now and my RSS downloader hasn't seen any activity since. I thought I was getting a new Patlabor series and I've been waiting around ever since.

You better not be getting my hopes up for nothing.

Astral Chain is closer to GitS than Patlabor

Why bother having hope? It's probably going to be decently written, but lack the talent in directing and animating the show

Soon.

Google "Patlabor EZY"

I mean I watched the movies without watching the show and I still thought they were both really good 8.5/10's

I miss having a good giant robot series to watch every week. My only options now are digging up old stuff that I havent watched yet.

Attached: tigerface.jpg (640x1442, 91K)

I've got a bad feeling stuff like this and sex robots will happen right outside our lifespans/the current generation

I didn't even notice I wasn't on Yea Forums

So basically, you went into it with your own ideas on what is and isn't a "true Patlabor film"? And you were upset that it got taken in a completely different direction, even though that's what Mamoru Oshii is known for?
And you were pissed off because there wasn't enough mecha, even though you also like how the series diverges from the mecha action to show the characters.
And you think that Patlabor is about "the police" and "the patlabors," and not about the way in which these two elements are part of a larger setting that's used to showcase a variety of issues that are prevalent in Japan at the time. Or did you really think Patlabor is just a simple series about cops in giant robots?
Did you just forget about the last episode of the OVA, which was literally the basis for the second film?
Like I'll admit the film isn't perfect. There isn't any characterization at all and almost all of it is exposition. I first watched it after I saw the first film without seeing anything else and I couldn't follow a single thing that was going on. I wouldn't recommend someone watch the film until they've seen everything else and got to know the characters, because the film is entirely focused on plot.
Kazunori Ito and Mamoru Oshii made P2 because they wanted to create a story that spoke to people about how they viewed Japan at the time. They weren't concerned about petty shit like what makes something a "true Patlabor film." Oshii in particular has stated that his goal is to make a film that no one has ever seen before. If they made just went with the same style as the first film again it would be going against how he works as an artist.
The film is obviously very different from everything else in the series. And it obviously has it's flaws. But I think it's best enjoyed for what it is. You're free to watch films in your autistic manner, but don't try to tell others that they have to do it like you.

never knew Yea Forums had actually good taste in anime

I knew I wasn't on Yea Forums because people were actually discussing a good old show instead of fawning over waifus and sexualised little girls.

Last two times I tried making a patlabor thread on Yea Forums I got like 4 replies

They have quality, no doubt. Even non-noncommittally, you'd have that, but both movies don't share the same tone of the show.
They're more character driven, while the movies were more plot driven. And by character driven, I mean almost entirely the show is about
>fun cops doing fun things and there are robots more than half the time
It has a lot of soul in it's characters and comedy, and only ever lightly do things start building up.
If it doesn't sound appealing to you, you're better off skipping the show and OVA, though the OVA did have a great three parter at the end, so maybe it might be worth watching the OVA's and skipping episode 3

>My only options now are digging up old stuff that I haven't watched yet.
Wait until you get to the point where I'm at, when you've already watched everything above a 6 and now if you want to want robots you've got to wade through all the obscure (for a reason), untranslated (for a reason), and generally mediocre to bad shit.

Attached: gakeen.jpg (900x1200, 236K)

Well maybe in another 5 years Dragonar will finally be finished

>Mamoru Oshii
Why the fuck would I watch a movie that has more to do with the style of the director than what the story was based on
>Did you just forget about the last episode of the OVA, which was literally the basis for the second film?
And they did better in the show to the point where the entirety of the movie is moot. Better characterization, better action, better exposition. But you know what they didn't have? Fish eye lens. That's what I wanted so god damn bad in my police dramas.
>Oshii in particular has stated that his goal is to make a film that no one has ever seen before.
Well then maybe instead of making boring movies, he should write a fucking book. If your objective in a medium is to transcend a message that really says something about society, you can rise up, but the anime medium isn't a product to set your moral quandaries in, if it cannot at least be good enough to watch.
>But I think it's best enjoyed for what it is.
An anime where all people do is talk? Read a fucking book, dipshit. You probably almost qualify for it if you watched in subs.

Attached: Patlabor 2.png (548x1874, 51K)

It's all about timing. Try close to the dead hours. Like right before so you can get a small boost and then coast into night, where randoms might drop in.
Weekends also help, especially for older stuff, which is similar to how older games get hosts during the weekend. Then again this is all for Yea Forums, haven't been to Yea Forums in a long time.

Attached: 1556726050159.gif (500x732, 299K)

play Super Mecha Battle
get it on bluestacks

Should I watch the series or the movie first?

OVA1->Movies
TV->OVA2

Series obviously
If you don't have the patience for it though the movies are perfectly watchable standalone even if some of the character interactions would obviously have more impact with more context

>Why the fuck would I watch a movie that has more to do with the style of the director than what the story was based on
Why not? There's more than one reason to watch a film dude. And there's more than one person who made the film in the first place. His influence on the project is just one large element of the production.
>And they did better in the show to the point where the entirety of the movie is moot.
They really didn't. A simple finale to an OVA where the main character gets over their own personal attachment to a giant robot whilst the bad guy stages a military coup on the capital is much less interesting than a thematically relevant political thriller about a former secret conspirator turned radical terrorist who creates a panic under the guise of a coup that results in a lockdown and martial law in order to protect the unjust peaceful status quo. At least for me it is.
>Well then maybe instead of making boring movies, he should write a fucking book
Oshii has written novels but that's not really the point. His forte is as a filmmaker and director, and that's where he exceeds. Provided he's working with a talented screenwriter as well.
>the anime medium isn't a product to set your moral quandaries in, if it cannot at least be good enough to watch.
I don't really know where you're going with this because we are talking about a film that is good enough to watch. And anime is full of "moral quandaries" of the people who make them, among many other things.
>An anime where all people do is talk? Read a fucking book, dipshit.
Again where are you going with this? Did we watch two different films? And the "read a book" argument? Really? Enjoying films doesn't exclude me from also reading, but that's a different topic entirely.
To be honest at this point it's obviously fruitless to keep discussing this further since you've already resorted to lame bad faith arguments, so I'll stop responding. Have fun being mad I guess?

Attached: 1467828396266.png (900x900, 38K)

>Oshii in particular has stated that his goal is to make a film that no one has ever seen before.
If he wanted to make something so wildly unique then he shouldn't have chosen to make a sequel in an established franchise.

Holy shit you are such a pleb, have sex.

Production of Patlabor the Movie 2 started after Kazunori Ito was appointed as the scriptwriter for the upcoming movie back in the early 1990s. It wasn't up to Oshii.

yes, established IPs should never ever be used as a launching pad for something different from their original tone

Attached: Ghost-in-the-Shell-1995[1].jpg (1280x720, 87K)

Sometimes I feel like i’m the only incompetent member of your team

It's a lost art with character design.

How does one get into patlabor? Where to start?

watch the TV series, then watch the movies.

Watch the OVAs and the first two movies, first try the TV series to get aquited with the characters a bit and if you find it boring drop it and just go OVA->movies 1,2.

Pretty much every game

Early Days OVA, then the first two films, then the TV series and the second OVA right afterwards.

Attached: 088_089.jpg (1280x883, 145K)

Patlabor movies 1 and 2 are genuine kino. Pure masterpieces.

Patlabor TV series is a boring as fuck slog which is literally of no value.

Go ahead and zoomer meme all you want, this is the correct opinion.

Sorry but you're an SJW now if you don't want everything to be waifushit.
Personally I love spending hundreds of dollars on gatcha games to own the libs.

what a retarded way of making sense of the world

Fuck off feminazi. You can't shame people into not being straight, so just stop trying.

>Patlabor movies 1 and 2 are genuine kino. Pure masterpieces.
Just the first one. Second movie is nothing special.

you're unironically more retarded than the people you seem to hate so much

>Go ahead and zoomer meme all you want, this is the correct opinion.
Why are you people so obsessed with needing everyone to fit your hivemind nowadays? Posts like these aren't even trying to discuss anything either before someone tries to pretend that's what it is, it's just non-descript asshurt over people liking what they dislike and vice versa

not him but thats already been used as an "argument" in this thread multiple times

Kid show kidnapping episode was kino.

The reason why gangweed was so effective is all you had to do to make faggots who fume about women all day sound stupid was repeat their own opinions back to them but with a picture of the joker attached.

I watched the OVA and the films. I love the characters so much but is it my impression that the TV show is similar to the OVA with just episodic self contained episodes? I don't really like that formula, I prefer a story building towards a long narrative arc.
Both movies are fucking flawless though.

Attached: 1538716573193.gif (500x180, 8K)

>Oshii in particular has stated that his goal is to make a film that no one has ever seen before.
It's shame he's usually only capable of rehashing the same story over and over again then.

2 is the most boring thing ever animated and put to film.

What that user is actually trying to say is he wanted to use the zoomer argument but was annoyed he was inb4'd
Nobody has a halfway decent argument to make in defense of the show which is why the thread is full of morons using "zoomer" instead of actual points.

Shitty team members always feel like that

The original Ghost in the Shell manga did what the Patlabor TV show attempted to do better imo. Although the setting is slightly different I suppose.

>dude lets make the manlet LITERALLY Vegeta
how did they get away with that?

Attached: 1540365968612.gif (500x375, 756K)

>What that user is actually trying to say is he wanted to use the zoomer argument
That wasn't what I was saying at all.

he has a short temper totally Vegeta
Watch more than 2 tv shows in your life, FFS

It's more likely he's annoyed by the term "correct opinion". The idea of a "correct opinion" comes from the minds of irritable spergs.

The second movie is a slow burner, I can't really blame anyone if you didn't like it. If you watched in the wrong mood or expectations it's very easy to perceive it as boring.
There's also a lot of subtext and themes that are very local to japanese politics, it also completely went over my head when I watched it at first. If you're curious about it:
youtube.com/watch?v=ybLKmO5Kq5A

Attached: 1559822230957.gif (540x291, 1.05M)

True.
But it really was the correct opinion.

Instead of samefagging you could just ask me to breakdown my post into babymode retardspeak if you're having trouble understanding what I said you know.

Yep, an irritable sperg. Seek sunlight.

That's not why people dislike it though. Most of Oshii's works are slow burners, and a lot of his works also share all the same themes it had since in general the guy doesn't have much else to say despite all his output.

sup /m/

cool animation, but how the hell does:
>that chopper have so many bullets
>that 'mecha' armor not withstand the damage

like why bother making a big mecha suit when you can just use a chopper to fuck shit up?

The mechs in Patlabor are just construction equipment.

Why would you say people don't like it then? I always assumed it was the slow burner aspect. Sure stuff like Angel's Egg is very very slow, but I think people«s expectations are properly aligned when going to watch it. As with Patlabor 2 I think people expect a very Action oriented Film, while it's mostly politics and people talking.

GitS in general is a superior franchise. Patlabor's fine for what it is but because it gets overshadowed it attracts more up-their-own-ass contrarian types.

Not only has almost everything Oshii ever made featured heavy political subtext, the mecha/sci-fi genre in general used to be the go-to genre for narratives like this.

They're not military grade

Literally ever annoying shitter in the world think they're the competent member of the team

o...

Attached: 1512278337936.jpg (641x530, 36K)

>Why would you say people don't like it then?
Because it's pretty dull? Most of Oshii's other works feature the same themes and are also pretty slow (dunno why you mentioned Angel's Egg as that's one of the only ones that's somewhat different to his usual output) and manage to be way more interesting. Nothing to do with expecting loads of action either, the first movie only had a total 10-15 minutes of action in it towards the end.

I'm going to assume you irrationally waifufag Shinobu like Oshii himself does if you think Movie 2 is this amazing, because I can't imagine why else someone would like it.

Why turn a mostly light-hearted Police Academy-type show into some navel gazey political drama, though? That's kind of missing the point.

>best shot on the team
>never hits anything
Oota needs to get fired

Attached: 1566810422596.jpg (1000x662, 247K)

>because I can't imagine why else someone would like it
Because of Oshii. He's like David Lynch for weebs. They like anything he touches and anyone who doesn't appreciate him is a pleb.

The concept is flexible enough that it can exist in different formats imo

He's a fucking idiot. The cop, I mean. Not the guy.

How so?

I imagine shut-ins neets would find the TV show sort of alien, with it's focus on character interaction/camaraderie and workplace bureaucracy. Wacky conspiracies where everyone is out to get them like what the movies dabble in are probably more palatable to those sorts of people.

>the guy doesn't have much else to say despite all his output
And what is Patlabor 2 saying that you feel he already said in his other work?

> dunno why you mentioned Angel's Egg
I was mentioning it to the fact that it's his most slow-burner movie as an example.

> Because it's pretty dull?
That doesn't really answer the question. I'm not trying to like tell you have to like the movie or anything, I was just curious what particular aspects of the movie turned people off. I postulated it was because of the slowburner nature of it, you're saying that's not the reason and countered that it's because it's dull, but that's hardly an answer with any substance, but fine if you don't want to talk anymore about it.

> I'm going to assume you irrationally waifufag Shinobu like Oshii himself
Man what are you even talking about. If I wanted to jack off I'd watch some porn, who honestly cares about this waifu shit non-ironically, this bullshit is consuming modern anime, why would I care for it.

>like why bother making a big mecha suit when you can just use a chopper to fuck shit up?
They're basically big policemen suits, and most criminals don't have military helicopters

Fuck You!

But the whole premise of the original OVA was the police training shtick and all the humor that came with it.

>genuinely trying to spin shit like "the movies are for weebs and the TV show is for cool alpha guys with big dicks"
lmao

You have to be a turbo weeb to like either one user, it's an anime from several decades ago.

>not being a shut-in = cool alpha guy with big dick
I thought Yea Forums was supposed to be better at discussing anime than Yea Forums was
it's impossible to talk about anything there because they can only talk in retarded extremes

I know, that user is a retard who can't imagine defending the TV by talking about its merits and can only string buzzwords together and hope others somehow feel shamed into sharing their opinion.
Which I guess is every single post on Yea Forums these days.

Think about it.

Attached: 1566066230717.jpg (500x281, 27K)

>it's impossible to talk about anything there because they can only talk in retarded extremes
Are you genuinely trying to pretend you're trying to get more thoughtful and insightful discussion going here by claiming the Patlabor movies are for shut-ins and the TV show is for outgoing people who love bureaucracy? (whatever the fuck that's supposed to mean)

I disliked Patlabor 2 and it wasn't due to expecting anything action oriented, as no other Patlabor media is action oriented.
I was expecting something that felt like it took place in the same universe as the other installments, with the same characters. A story revolving around a mechanised police squad operating in postmodern Tokyo

Instead it was a cold war style political thriller where the majority of the cast where relegated to background characters in a world that bears no resemblance to the other Patlabor installments.

Some people love it because it's a departure from the rest of the series, some hate it for that reason. I don't think that can be reconciled.

I'm that user and I didn't use a single buzzword in my post, if you feel I did then point them out please. A shut-in neet, which a lot of anime fans are whether you like it or not, would most likely find a lot of what the TV show is about to be completely alien. Whereas big political conspiracies where everyone is out to get them would be way more palatable to them. Also no it has nothing to do with "cool alpha guys" you insecure retard.

This. I wanted to see the same thing I'd seen before. If I don't see the anime archetypes doing the one thing they do over and over again I get bored.

This seems like a pretty fair assessment

You explain yourself fag

Yea Forums is better at discussing anime than Yea Forums

The Patlabor movies are for shut-ins and neets

I took a media production course in high school and ended up paired up with the laziest mother fucker in the school
It wasn't so bad the second year though since we ended up with the only teacher in the entire school he couldn't charm into not realizing how poor a student he was. In hindsight I should have taken history instead.

Anyone actually played any of the video games?
Anything good?

This. You know what sucked about Red Dead Redemption 2? It was a fucking western shooter. Just like the first game.
The plebs ate it up but true patricians like me know it should have been an RTS or flight sim to be original and subvert expectations.

Opposite.
I often feel like I'm holding everyone else back.

Are you incapable of replying to a post without completely twisting it into something else? I'm not that desperate for a mindless argument with you man
>the Patlabor movies are for shut-ins
>the TV show is for outgoing people who love bureaucracy? (whatever the fuck that's supposed to mean)
All I said that what the TV show is about would probably be alien to them compared to what the movies are about. Different sorts of people have difference preferences you know?

You can bet your ass they are jap only, kyodai

I agree with everything you said and I still love Patlabor 2 because despite all that its still an excellent movie. Now with Patlabor 3 all of that applies on top of it being a mediocre film, which is why I dislike it.

A guy I used to play games online with constantly had this attitude. Genuinely believed they were doing ALL the work. They would be at the bottom or near the bottom of the scoreboard after every game and regardless of if we won or lost he'd say everyone else was an idiot.

I think most people with this mindset are furious everyone isn't doing what they think they SHOULD be doing at all times. Even though others are doing just fine. They are megalomaniacs or autistic or both. And every time I see people here complaining about it I remember my idiot friend who scored the worst in every game but somehow managed to maintain the delusion that they were the only person who had a clue.

Why are off topic threads always the best? This applies to all boards.

This. I can't imagine being so retarded that you'd have any opinion other than this one.

/v is the real /b

every time i play single player games with a party system where i as a player cant control the party

Because Yea Forums is shit overall. I'm a fucking weeb, have been in Yea Forums since 2004 and I still haven't used that fucking shitshow of a place.

>posting wacky conspiracy story shit for shut-ins and neets
Yawn. Don't you have any workplace bureaucracy kino?

There were 30 mecha anime that aired in 2018 alone.

There's some toku that's still popular like Kamen Rider.
Last year had Gridman which was a really popular anime adaption of an old toku/mecha series
This season has Granbelm, which looks weird at first (chibi mecha piloted by magical girls) but the directors and producers hate the state of modern mecha so it's a hotblooded 2D super robot series.
There's also Symphogear which final season's airing and it's literally a fanservice to toku and ancient shounen.

Have you tried /m/

Because it's a novelty and a topic hasn't been discussed to death on a different topic's board.

I feel like with a new cast also should come a new setting.

Patlabor's been discussed to death on Yea Forums that all the people who would discuss it would rather not because they do it every year.

Thread was only good for the first half because retards like this guy weren't up yet

What's your problem?

Whats yours? And I was referring to the linked poster and not whoever he was trying to troll

>been meaning to watch patlabor for awhile now
>keep getting into other shows and constantly putting it off
>have pretty much everything from initial d downloaded and currently i'm watching through symphogear

He's a shut-in neet who likes wacky conspiracy stories instead of workplace bureaucracy.

I'm more about TV than OVA1 but 'you did it' is still one of the best moments in the franchise.

I will try them next year.

As everyone has already said, the Patlabor series is very boring. Nobody contests this. (They say zoomer but have no argument beyond that)
Patlabor movies 1 and 2 are great though.

Wasn't the film Headgear's last entry in the series? And it was set three years after the events of the first film, where the characters had to clean up other people's mess in an only somewhat official operation to destroy the Ark. It makes sense that Division 2 got broken up with the characters either taking new jobs or retiring, not just because of the events of the last film but to show that time moves on and good things come to an end. The lack of characterization in the film is definitely it's biggest flaw, but I would also argue that given the themes and scale of the plot there wasn't really much choice out of the main cast apart from Goto and Shinobu. This is something that was improved on in Ghost in the Shell, but even then most of the action focused on Motoko, Batou and Togusa. Also Kazunori Ito is arguably the true genius behind Patlabor/GITS, not Oshii.

Are there any good Patlabor artbooks?

The entire point of mecha in Patlabor is that they're not at all practical for 'traditional' mecha stuff. Even military labors are pretty lightweight but these civilian use ones? Their armor isn't even metal, it's mainly carbon fibre and plastic.

>TV show is for outgoing people who love bureaucracy? (whatever the fuck that's supposed to mean)
Are you pretending o be retarded?
He's saying people who have held a job and thus experienced workplace bureaucracy, ya NEET dicklet.

If you're a shut-in neet you will find the TV show sort of alien, with it's focus on character interaction/camaraderie and workplace bureaucracy. Wacky conspiracies where everyone is out to get them like what the movies dabble in are probably more palatable to people like you.

It's not at all what you're talking about. There's a subset of 'intellectual' Oshii fans who get offended at stories having any sort of humor element in it. Sounds retarded but it's the truth, and that's all it is in this case. It sort of used to be the case with Ghost in the Shell which has been mentioned a few times in this thread too, although after the shitheaps that were Arise and more notably the Hollywood adaptation a lot of those types of fans disappeared, I guess they're only in it if it's "hip" to like the series.

harsh truths right here.

Patlabor looks really interesting, seems to two movies and an anime, were would you start?

Start with the early days OVA.

TV show is a slice-of-life comedy, if you've seen any of the Police Academy movies before it's like that as an anime basically
OVAs/Movies are more serious thrillers
both are pretty self-contained, watch whatever appeals to you

Considering I'm the ONLY one on my team...yes.

She's got that "I'm going to grow a dick and rape you" 80s hentai look.

Watch two episodes of the anime and then drop it out of boredom then enjoy the films.

OVA then movies then TV show

Watch two minutes of the films then drop it out of boredom and enjoy the OVA.

Attached: helldiver.jpg (723x1104, 110K)

Fafner's apparently one of the hugest modern mecha series in Japan currently

Nice, thank you, I'll probably give the films a watch

There are two continuities. The first OVAs that lead into the movies and the TV series that lead into the second OVAs. Either is fine to start with.

Attached: 71832425_p0.jpg (1416x2000, 1011K)

Are you serious? I've actually downloaded something from that franchise thinking its some obscure eva "ripoff", never really seen it discussed

what a stupid mech design

Whats stupid about it?

Literally me

>mecha
Gundam's still trucking. Code Geass is immensely popular too. Also one off shows like Darling in the Franxx or Gridman seem pretty popular.

>toku
Kamen Rider's plenty popular, Sentai is on life support though. There's also Garo I guess that still gets stuff every now and then but that's always mainly existed as a pachinko thing.

There's no "smart" mecha design to begin with, it's whatever looks cooler

The TV show is a loose adaption of the manga. It's got a few two-part episodes and a couple of longer background arcs, particularly towards the end and into OVA2. For my money it's better written than OVA1 too. Much better characterization, thanks to how long a time it has to flesh them out and grow them over.

It's extremely unpopular in the West but it's really popular in Japan.
The first season is an Eva ripoff but everything afterwards is argaubly the best mecha series of the current century so far
/m/ loves it but you won't see it talked about much anywhere else on the English side of the internet.

nobody has ever done this

based
cringe

Not that user, but I am too was never been a fan of the patlabor's mech. The pilot is too exposed and unprotect relative to its size. Even VOTOM does a better job and the scope dogs are twice as small.

Attached: votoms 2.webm (420x282, 2.52M)

Can we talk about how awful Patlabor 2 is and completely throws away character development and steps on the campy spirit of the series?

Attached: Kanuka.jpg (990x762, 430K)

"Fafner of the blue Sky" is the one I torrented. I genuinely didn't know it had a following in japan.

The west seems way more harsh on eva clones for some reason, I personally really enjoy them, RahXephon and Argento Soma were both awesome shows. Had put this one on the backburner but knowing that I might pick it up later

I really enjoy how the Helldiver is at its core just an Ingram but with hardpoints replacing handheld weapons. Kind of sells the idea that SHI doesn't need to reinvent the wheel when it already has a perfectly good high performance platform to work with.

This is all correct but it's still a great film. Maybe it would be better for it if it was a completely new IP. But it's still a good film nonetheless.

Your autism is unironically lending credence to that guy's shitpost. Have sex.

>By the way, we all agree the episode revolving around Chinese takeout was the best, right?
We'll have to agree in disagreeing.
This guy comes and slaps your labor in the ass. What do you do?

Attached: screenshot-17.jpg (500x375, 168K)

Movie #2's fine for what it is but apparently Shinobu is Oshii's self-insert which paints a really bizarre picture of him considering what Shinobu's story is in that movie.

The Oshii fanboys are going to swarm.

Guys I'm sorry I didn't intend for someone to turn my post into a shitpost

Patlabor 2 is pretty much the definition of 'it's a good game, but not a good [franchise] game'. It's a great political thriller and has some interesting things to say, particularly about domestic Japanese politics and the cultural understanding of the US-written constitution.
But I also don't think it gains much, if anything at all, from hanging its hat on the Patlabor IP other than not needing to establish its cast in its runtime. It's far from a bad film, but I still don't know what to make of it. WXIII is the same thing again, but also not a great film even on its own merits.

Patlabor takes place in the late 90's not in a science fantasy in outer space. They still use crt monitors in the mechs in Patlabor.

Yeah, you have to watch it all in order since it's one story. Check out pic related for a watchorder.
It's a bit outdated since there's a new set of movies now too (that are being reworked into a TV series.

>character development
>in anime
lol

I think it's a shame the characters don't get more screentime but lets not kid ourselves here

I think you're misunderstanding the intent behind them, then. Labors, particularly the ones we see most frequently, aren't some cutting edge military god of the battlefield. They're forklifts with legs.

>The pilot is too exposed
Kinda like driving a forklift, as that's pretty much what the mechs are in Patlabor.

Any second now

Ah sweet, thanks. I've already made the mistake of downloading the second season before the first so thats handy.
And good to know it has a following, it helps to have some more confidence in it before diving in, more obscure shows like this usually need a bit of time investment before getting good.

You didn't watch the first movie, did you?

>usually need a bit of time investment before getting good.
The first season isn't bad by any means but there's a huge change in writing quality at episode 12, when they switch to a better writer who's been with the series ever since. He turned the series from another average Eva clone into something really cool.

98 Zoomer and I like mecha
Started watching Gundam in 2012 with 0079 and loved it, watched the rest of UC from there and other shows like Patlabor and Votoms.
Don't care about toku.
I want Armored Core 6

What's your favorite mech design from any of the mecha you watched so far?

Not him but I'm also a 98fag and my favorite mecha design is Gaogaigar.

Are you me? Every single thing you said is true to how I got into mecha and I was born in 98 as well
Uncanny

dominion tank police > patlabor
leona > noa

>ps4 2017
What the fuck?

What was up with the weird architecture in dominion? It was like all the buildings had fungi inspired facades. It was very strange.

The second one made the whole world look like it was the factory at the end of Robocop.

It's the Disaster Report spin-off featuring Ultraman, Godzila, Eva, Gamera, and Labors.

I hate the second OVA because it ruined a lot of the charm and uniqueness of the first OVA's setting. The second OVA is a reboot/original story
Apparently the first OVA followed the original manga that explains why the world is some weird biopunk cyberpunk setting but I never read the manga so I don't know.
First OVA really felt like that beyond the silly police setting, there was some serious world altering sci-fi shenanigans happening in the background.
Second OVA felt like a shitty Patlabor clone which is ironic considering Patlabor is a clone of the first OVA/manga. Makes me mad it was a reboot because the story was getting good too.
