I get what they were trying to do with Best Wishes. It's what they do with every odd Generation. It always has to be a reset, a return to basics. It happened in AG, it happened in BW, and it happened in SM. But BW handled it the worst by actually reverting Ash's character. I get that he had stopped being interesting as a character as he became more experienced and that there was a charm to his amateur days, but you can't follow the Sinnoh League with that. At least SM was smart about it and didn't make him an amateur. Sure, they don't focus on him being highly skilled like in XY and most of his difficulties seem to come from working with an amateur team, but at least he isn't forgetting basic information.

as someone that hasn't kept up with the anime since like sixth grade (so, midway through RSE era I guess) the impression I get from what I've seen online over the years is that people aren't upset about this win because "not a real league" so much as they are just so fucking burned out at this point on him constantly losing, including one season where it was just straight up bullshit that he lost (XY I think?) so giving it to him now feels like too little too late and the fact that this season is a more comedic one with a lower barrier to entry for the league to begin with just makes it feel more like an insult to them.

You're essentially right. The XY anime finished during the 20 year anniversary of the games. Ash progressed farther than he ever had in a real League. He battled the Champion of Kalos and had her on the ropes and panicking despite her using her main WHILE Mega Evolved before their battle was interrupted. Everything pointed towards this being his triumph, along with the fact that Alola was confirmed not to have a Pokémon League. It got down to their last Pokémon, Ash-Greninja vs Mega Charizard X, and while Ash-Greninja no longer had a 2x type advantage, it at least resisted Fire moves. Charizard tanked hit after hit while Greninja got KO'd by Dragon Claw and Blast Burn. While the Trainer, Alain, had at least been built up since early on in the Generation and had parts of his journey displayed where he challenged Mega Evolved Trainers, he didn't even really plan on entering the League.

Obviously Ash is winning the Alola League not because of backlash to XY, but because of interference from higher up. The writers wanted Ash to win Kalos. Gen VII is the anniversary Gen. Alola Forms for Kanto Pokémon, characters talking about how amazing Kanto is, Kanto getting remade in the style of Let's Go. Even the 151 Battle Royal at the beginning of the League is a reference to the Master Trainers in LGPE (not that it had 151 Master Trainers), but these weren't masters. These were civilians who just thought it would be fun to enter. And for the actual League, there were no full 6v6 battles. It was either 1v1, 2v2, or 3v3 for the very finals. Ash is the only character with 6 Pokémon in Alola, and it's not even at one time (though his exhibition against the Masked Royal will be a 6v6). There wasn't really anything particularly amazing about winning this League. Paul, Gary, or Alain could easily win this League. I don't mind the SM anime, but why did they try to make his victory so low stakes? It's like a professional runner winning a race at an elementary school.

To be fair yugioh goes off the rails pretty hard, even just in the later parts of GX.
Things get weird in the original series but it's like every new series escalates the levels of stupidity

The XY league was mostly skipped, and the battles consisted of anti-climatic ties, Ash forgetting how to counter basic tactics, and Pikachu doing most of the work while the rest of Ash's Gen 6 team were pathetically defeated. And neither of those leagues had Ash using his older pokemon from previous generations.

Everything these days is just a glorified advertisement for merch.
Except video games, somehow they're the only form of media that directly siphons money from their consumers.

All the merch is primarily the pokemon. Not being ash wouldn't dent those sales and the character design is already there as the protagonists.

Ash solidifies the merch as a constant figure. You can't have pikachu without Ash, and you can't abandon pikachu, it wouldn't be right and would slowly kill the franchise.

Could not give less of a shit about ash rubbing pokemon against each other and never have, there were a few interesting fights in the early years but when it just became a shonen fight via pokemon I lost all interest.
I actually loved the season as a whole though, I kind of dropped off around mid gen 3 but started up again around XY and thought it was pretty bland. Really enjoyed this one though.
