Yeah, yeah. Everyone with pets have done this as kids, but the way she does it is pretty unsettling at times. I think it's just the way she's casually doing it, without any expression on her face, is what makes it a little uncanny.

Decibel is exponential, 30 dB is twice as loud as 20 dB and so on, 500 dB would have enough kinetic energy to vaporize the planet. So no, it's most likely not possible.

The better question is " Why do you think this is scary?" Is the fog not letting you see whats around you? If thats the case plenty of horror game do that. Maybe not with fog but obscuring the players vision to have things jump out at them.

games that scare me usually have sounds that scare me and either have enemies that you can hear but not see or that you hear far in advance before you see them
system shock 2 would be an example of the latter just like sh1 to me at least

the only other games that scare me are Afraid of Monsters: Director's Cut, and Cry of Fear but for the opposite actually
in those there are plenty of enemies that are silent or near silent before they attack you or when they are attacking you

SH was one of the first of its kind, I'm not so sure it's merely 'nostalgia' that makes people remember it fondly. What always scared me the most about SH is the aesthetic of the otherworld and soun design. Akira Yamaoka does an excellent job at making some oppressive sounding ambience, coupled with the abandoned decaying industrial nightmare world, I still think it works very well. Just not as well with PS1 graphics, now that we have the knowledge of what graphics can look like.

Because walking on all fours is an unnatural way for a person to move and makes them look like an animal. It's the same thing that triggers the uncanny valley.
