Ignore the online.
Don't rush through the main story, do the stranger missions and side quests as well. The game proceeds in chapters, some stuff gets locked out until post game if you don't do it the first time around. Talk, take in the view, enjoy the weather.
Glitch money if you don't want to grind for outfits and the like. No shame in that.

Actual gunfights are shit but the story and side content carry it. The best part having your character come to terms with a terminal illness is also the worst part, so try and do as much content before chapter 5.
