deltarune only has one ending, the destruction of the timeline. dark, darker, yet darker

for context, deltarune's story is about toby fox and the experience/struggle of making a game and telling a story. deltarune was originally started in 2012 but the project completely failed, instead turning into undertale. a bunch of deltarunes concepts were put into undertale, like the delta rune itself and W.D. Gaster's entry 17.

Maybe not the coolest, but during a puzzle in Snowdin, I pressed the switch behind the tree before Papyrus told me about it in order to solve the puzzle faster. Then sans called me out on it. Took me by surprise because I thought I already discovered all of the character reactions.

The whole point is that the main character is three entities in one body: Frisk, the friendly good kid, Chara, the genocidal evil kid, and the player, who chooses who to give control, and the player is the one with the ability to save/reset. The player is the one with determination to continue the game after Frisk/Chara dies. The fact that the player is controlling the kid is the most important piece of the plot.

maybe undertale isn't your kind of game if explicit plot and lore concepts piss you off? gaster was a royal scientist who invented the determination machine and worked closely with sans and at least one other person, before blipping himself out of existence. you literally cannot know the plot of undertale without at least having a vague recognition that gaster existed, which is specifically why people find him so interesting. gaster's sole written line in undertale is also directly quoted by a character in delta rune, on top of the implication that he's influenced at least one character (jevil). just because he doesn't fucking come out and directly say hi to you doesn't mean he isn't a vital story character.

gaster's "entry #17" theme plays when you try to make a phone call in the dark world, and plays ambiently when hanging out around a semi-hidden red bunker to the south of town.

asriel hated the plan but went along with it out of grief after chara suicided. but when he reached the human town and saw the flowers, he refused to do it and "betrayed" chara, causing him to be killed.

I was never able to figure out Chara's and Asriel's motivations

Sans and Gaster worked in a different field. I think they worked on a machine to try to get out of the underground but Gaster fell in while Sans was only partially in or something like that. It's why Gaster is a ominous random being that isn't seen or heard of much, and why Sans can teleport places. I assume he might know but I feel he would be upset by it.

imo gaster and sans' work was on time travel and quantum mechanics, and they discovered an "anomaly", which was not only warping space-time, but outright deleting timelines. through the process of researching it via their dimension-hopping technology they figured out that the anomaly was a sentient entity, and wanted to find out how it worked.

gaster and sans went to the undertale timeline because the initial anomalous entity (chara) was dead, and they would have free access to experimenting on its remains.

gaster I'm assuming from what we know about him likely designed the determination extractor... and some form of dark world technology. given sans' rooms extreme similarities to the dark world and his door being deltarune's quick-travel door.

Yes, but they're all shitty experiments. Shit tier Josef Mengele style experiments. She gathered up monsters' ashes just to see if she could bring them back to life, and we all know why. It's obvious Gaster is involved, he's the one fucking with you at the beginning with the bait and switch character creator, plus you can find hints about him throughout the real world and the dark world. Kris obviously has his own consciousness independent from the soul inside of him, similar to how Chara did. Kris pulling out the knife at the end with red eyes is an obvious parallel to Chara. Chara and Gaster are the only transcendent beings, so it makes sense they'd be fucking with each other and they're clearly both involved in some way.

Deltarune is a test run of gasters determination experiments. Alphys said herself that a soul needs a vessel. Gaster figured it out. By creating a connection with you, the player, and providing you with a vessel, he hopes to create a brighter future.

Why do you think gaster put you in a character creator, but then said you don't have a choice in who you become? It's because your soul is your own, but your body was always going to be Kris'. Gaster's method to keep Chara under control was to create a "normal" world with no problems and put a foreign soul inside of Chara, making him essentially a puppet. Chara ripping "your" soul out at the end and flashing the camera menacingly was his way of saying "I know what you're up to." The only weird thing about this is Chara and the player being completely seperate entities as opposed to in undertale when they were both aspects of each other, but you can choose to "betray" Chara at the end of genocide anyway so I guess it's not too unrealistic.

Its definitely an interdimensional fight but that gjy fanfics the hell out of it.

An anomaly (aka the player) is fucking with the timeline and outright deleting realities. Gaster is trying to harness that power to save the timelines from erasure and create a happy ending.

I was there for the early days of undertale on Yea Forums and the speed of in which threads got /vg/'d and then turned to absolute cancer sewage is something I have yet to see since. It was fucking incredible how quickly it all went downhill. It took about a week to hit rock bottom.

I accidentally killed an enemy near the beginning of my first playthrough, went the rest of the game being pacifistic until I got to a boss I couldn’t beat and grinded until I could. I kept playing until the last boss, but the revelation that I was considered a murderous psychopath when literally all I’ve been doing is trying to stay alive defending myself against malevolent monsters struck me as so hamfistedly retarded I lost all will to keep going. Does enjoying this game and doing further playthroughs rest on accepting that as a sane proposition, or do subsequent playthroughs invalidate that overly pacifistic morality?

The really big emotional core of Undertale was the way it involved the player in it - it had virtually no fourth wall, and all the characters interacted with you, the player, and extended their offers of friendship to you.

Undertake mostly uses the 4th wall for shock value and comedic effect. For a lot of players, Flowey addressing them savescumming to save goat mom is probably going to be the moment that really gets them engaged with the game. Undertale’s manipulation of the battle system is easily it’s best executed and most novel feature, and some 4th wall leaning was inevitable to accomplish it, so I’d say it was worth the trade-offs of being a little lame at times.
