Releasing on EGS was the smartest move they've done. The game wouldn't sell well even on steam so they ran with the Epic money so they don't go bankrupt.

I've liked Remedy's games, and was looking forward to this, but it dropped between a bunch of other high-profile games and I only have so much time and money. It's also really nice that they made a show of having women's only review events, effectively telling half of their audience that their dollars are not wanted. Real big-brain move, that was. Even as someone who was, as of last E3, totally hooked, I'm waiting until I'm done with all my other games before I snag this (and by then, as a bonus, it'll probably be on sale).

It's crap. And I actually tried to play it, not just judging by the protagonist's appearance. The game manages to be both incredibly boring and incredibly confusing at the same time. The quests are poorly explained and usually result in wandering around trying to figure out what the hell you're supposed to do and where you're supposed to do it. You'd think the quest markers would help, but oftentimes they're not even at the exact spot you have to do the task. They're at a completely different point in a large room and you have to search for the poorly explained objective yourself. Also, the dialogue is cringey as fuck. If the main character's man jaw didn't make you hate her already, listening to her talk certainly will. And the enemies are ridiculously bullet spongy. There's nothing to the combat but shoot, take cover, and shoot again. It's simultaneously mind numbingly boring and frustratingly difficult. Literally the only things this game has going for it are:

RTX+DLSS looks nice on my PC and runs at a playable framerate. Still doesn't do anything to fix the dogshit gameplay though.

It's garbage if you use it by itself, but not paired with RTX. It's not meant to make the game look better. It's meant to make the game look slightly worse, but massively increase framerate. It's a trade-off. Without RTX it's pointless because if you have an RTX card you can already run at 60fps without RTX. But if you turn on RTX on a 1440p or higher screen, then you'll pretty much have an unplayable framerate. Turning on DLSS makes the image very slightly lower quality, but massively increases your framerate to a playable level. Basically it's a way to run a high res screen at lower non-native resolutions without it looking like complete dogshit.

I actually played this from start to finish. The game makes a great first impression if you're hungry for a good sci-fi thriller, then it goes downhill from there. From a technical standpoint, the game engine isn't ready for prime time and the awful load times and hiccups make it clear. The physics are nice and the texture work is surprisingly good on the consoles. The basic shooting is solid and rewards you for being aggressive. Later on the game whiffs a lot of its story setup. Some of the side content, especially the optional bosses can be utterly grueling (combined with the long load times to make losing hurt even more). The game picks back up right at the end. Ahti was amusing with his antics.

I like the gameplay and the narrative, but the way the game constantly stops and starts to dump exposition on you is awful and ruins the pacing a ton. Well I think Max Payne 1 and 2 managed to hold up from a gameplay point of view at the time because not a lot of other third person shooters were doing slow motion at the time and the Matrix had come out just two years earlier so a lot of people wanted to emulate it and it was a success. More importantly both of those games told interesting stories and strongly set their tones and themes from the word go and that helped invest people into the game quite well.
Alan Wake basically did the same thing from a storytelling point of view but had extremely basic and unsatisfying gameplay. I remember magazines containing details of being able to travel around Bright Falls free roam but considering it was a horror game I knew that probably wouldn't happen and was right. The enemies just didn't feel threatening after the first few hours and the gameplay quickly overstayed its welcome.
With Quantum Break the narrative focus went into overdrive with those live action segments which took the player out of the game too frequently so you wouldn't really want to keep going. The combat while more enjoyable than Alan Wake still got stale fast.
When I saw Control's first gameplay trailer I just despaired. It was clear to me Remedy had learned its lessons about too much narrative focus but the gameplay wasn't compelling. Seeing telekinesis mechanics straight out of Half-Life 2, Bioshock, Doom 3 Res of Evil etc. is not new or interesting. Nor is the typical follow the marker structure with quest logs straight out of an MMO or Ubisoft game going to thrill me. So it's left to shooting mechanics and movement which are all your usual dashes and spraying with a pistol but with absolutely no variety. Hell, some enemies at longer ranges just freeze in place and take it while you melt down floating health bars for hours like an absolute chore. When you see a HUD like the one Control has it's usually a red flag for mediocre gameplay.
There is absolutely everything wrong with Aloy.

In short, Remedy has had 18 fucking years to improve on its gameplay and show something innovative but it's too busy copying what everyone else was doing years ago. Their development cycles are very long and the end product is usually less than 10 hours in total and in 2019 unless that's an amazing 10 hours of gameplay it's not even remotely worth it. They didn't adapt to change and now the studio is probably going to get axed.
Also Quantum Break and Control had some of the most sterile art designs I've ever seen in vidya and very weak soundtracks. That doesn't help either.

Marketing and promotional images seem pretty flat to me. It’s presented cleanly but I think it just looks like nothing really new, even if the psychic ability thing isn’t very common in games. I think if all of this focus was going to be on the main character, then some more emotion and “struggle” should have been communicated to people seeing the game for the first time. There’s nothing to really like or dislike about the character if something like the OP image is the first thing you see. I personally would’ve liked to see the game center around her powers to a degree where she didn’t even use a gun, but that’s honestly more for style and I wouldn’t know how to make what I’m thinking work in place of what we got, it would be a lot of work.

I liked the game well enough, but I was left wanting more, combat was decent and felt satisfying by the end of the game, but even after reading every collectible pick up the game only took between 20 and 30 hours to beat, and I could have done it in 10 ish if I didn't fuck around so much and explore every nook and cranny. There is so much interesting story in the collectibles that you only get to experience a sliver of in actual game play, I bet there will be a bunch of dlc to fill those gaps, but while the game feels well polished it seems like there should have been more.
