For what it's worth, Steam now has an offline mode and you can even launch Half-Life 2 without having Steam running. It's ironic that Half-Life 2 would be one of the games that has no Steam DRM but it's true. You can just double-click the .exe and run it.

I can still play offline with a crack, that's what I did when HL2 was released.

How is it Epics fault for BL3 having Denuvo, when the Epic store itself has absolutely no DRM at all outside of account licenses, which is why all their games appear instantly? Control was "cracked" on launch because it had literally 0 DRM like every other game on Epics store unless the devs themselves implement one. Literally, no there were games that would phone home constantly on pc before steam, and even then steam's DRM only has to check once every ~2 months unless otherwise tagged (Ex: free weekend games). Hell even among the time steam came out it's DRM was laughably easy to crack

It really isn't. Steamworks DRM is a lot less invasive than a lot of shit than existed before it.

The problem is that they didn't stop publishers from putting three layers on DRM on their games, so now you have Steam->Publisher Login->DRM for a ton of games.
