Because N64 was a party console. Everyone I know played games on that console exclusively with friends. When you are playing games with friends that makes the games 10x more memorable and entertaining.

the ps1 had plenty of multiplayer/party games, and the two most iconic n64 games (mario 64 and oot) were single-player.
Everyone back in school had a PS1, but only one of our friends had an N64. Everyone had a Gameboy though.
