Very few if any of the Tales games are related to each other
Even the ones that are related to each other are in the same world several centuries apart so the best reference you get to an older game is either a similar location or an item that makes you go "aha i get that reference"

Only one I've played is Symphonia but I think it's great. It's got the classic JRPG setup with overworld and towns and dungeons and everything except it's action combat. Still haven't finished it though.

Zestiria is actually the sequel, despite being released first. The story takes place 1000 years after the events of Berseria. But they're pretty much standalone games and only have minor references to each other's events. Zestiria is kinda trash, I'd say play it only if you really really liked Berseria and want to see more of the world.

Well, the game mirrors Zestiria so that's not surprising.

You still become a hero and defeat the big bad with the power of friendship though. The whole antagonistic protagonist thing is just window dressing.

Honestly didn't care much for Berseria and couldn't push myself to finish it, but Magilou's introduction might be my favourite of any character in any game ever. She enters the scene for absolutely no reason in the prison, gets halfway through introducing herself then just gets bored and wanders offscreen and no one cares at all. It's perfect.

I never said they were evil, they just all have their selfish reasons for stopping the bad guy. And individualism doesn't mean you can't work in a group. Only eleanor is the selfless party member. Velvet and Eizen want revenge, phi wants Velvet's pus... er happiness, rokurou wants to kill stuff and Magilou just wants to see the world burn because she's curious.
