I ended up resorting to a walkthrough, which the only one I could find was via youtube. Then again, by that point I had wandered around looking for Akira for entirely too long due to missing that npc and was getting a little fed up, if I had seen her I probably would have figured it out quicker since another meaning for hassock is some kind of mushroom, apparently, so I would probably have stayed on the park.
