CRTs are worth it even with emulators. Until games can be upscaled perfectly nothing beats playing at native resolution.

you can emulate using a CRT, use a CRT with original hardware, emulate on a HDTV with enhanced visuals or play original hardware on a HDTV with a line-doubler for enhanced visual quality.

The only really bad combination is a HDTV with component video.

CRT is the single most pathetic "fad" in gaming right now. It was born entirely from the nostalgia of aging boomers desperate to plug in the ole Xbox so they can try and recapture those fleeting moments of childhood with the Good Ole Games as they were "meant to be played."

Cathode ray tubes are still unrivaled in color reproduction IMO. The truest blacks and most vibrant colors. It's a shame they're not really produced anymore.

I can understand people my age or greater wanting them for nostalgia's sake, but college age kids jacking off over them is just weird.

From the game? Maybe. From a production CRT with any cable better than RF or composite? That's a lot of fucking different. I'm playing through a game I played back in the day right now but with the better setup and the experience is way different despite the game being a little nostalgic. But if the experience was pure nostalgia, you'd put it down after a few hours because that's how that shit works. I've got dozens of hours clocked in right now after setting up after a move and finally having space for the CRT. That's appreciation, not nostalgia. Anyone putting in the money right now who isn't a fucking hipster knows the difference.

I wouldn't say CRTs are necessary. A Retrotink 2x and/or an OSSC can make the games look phenomenal.

I would say it is worth playing games on the hardware it was designed for (pirated of course) because emulation is shit.
