Have you played it? It can’t even be viewed as an alternative view of the series, it’s just a shit product of its time, trying to do Dead Space and Last of Us. It shat on everything the series stood for plus Capcom’s black magic MTframework for fucking UE3. Seriously, if I could monkey paw it I’d rather it and LP2 didn’t exist because at least LP2 will inevitably happen because it’s the natural progression of the franchise. 3 is just a fucking mistake. GFWL isn't the only fuckery. The game also crashes less than semi regularly, but more than enough to be annoying, on systems that are running with more than 6 core processors. So you'll need to go into your boot settings and tone that down. GFWL is only really bad if you're playing on windows 10, or at least that what i've heard.
LP2 is worth playing if you haven't done so before, but MP on PC is pretty much dead.
You can find an altered .dll for bulletstorm(i think) that will turn off GFWL, but the offline saves that you have for LP2 won't be transferable to GFWL if you choose to use it later.

Also, Very important. You have to get GFWL working at least once in order to upgrade the game to the post release version. I didn't do this beforehand and the final mission has a bug where it doesn't allow you to complete it and it just crashes the game.

I couldn't pick a favorite with so many contenders such as the hardballer, all the VS that can transform into flying mode and the two VS that can merge into one super VS.
The only one I don't like piloting is probably the original GTT-01 VS.

as much as i dislike how slow the GTT-01 is i appreciate its clunky nature and that it's one of the first ones you use.
I think my least favorite would have to be the GTF-13F followed by the GAF-15D(Just because of how little use i got to see of it in single player)
The concept for the GAF-15D is great though. Coop buddies operating turrets is fun
