You differentiate characters by giving them interesting personalities, visual designs, and gameplay styles. Most popular fighting games, mobas, team class shooters, and other genres where backstory and lore mean very little do this just fine. Even something like Guilty Gear, which has a whopping two playable characters from its home country, Japan, does it better. It also has an actual lore excuse for that, and the characters would still be awesome even if they were Japanese.

It's especially convenient when the characters' visual designs and personalities are otherwise extremely boring and generic. They're relying entirely on race and gender identity to carry it. Not only is this boring, it's a very blatant marketing move to hook in people who white knight other races and identities to cope with their personal insecurities.

I don't remember the last time I bought a game. Probably ace combat 7 and it fucking sucked. Didn't hold a candle to any of the previous titles.

Yes, but tactfully. It's not preying on or pandering to a common and specific market in its home country. EA doesn't exactly give me a lot of faith in their integrity when they rely on preying on a common and intensely-defended political topic while half-assing every other aspect of its characters. Especially when said game is also unabashedly jumping on the battle royale and freemium lootbox bandwagons.

Does it mean anything regarding the gameplay? Technically, no. Is it damning of the development practices and standards of EA, and that they're not above hitting below the belt?
