There has to be a sense of paranoia as people try to survive and uncover who is and isn't a werewolf. That is where the fear comes from but most people just see werewolves as hulk mode for the player. They don't really think how inconvenient it would be for werewolf trying to live a normal life. And as you said most people have their own versions of werewolves that remove the troublesome habits that would otherwise make them fun to play. In most cases werewolves are just people but now they're big and have lots of fur.
