It’s kind of bizarre. I thought Yokai Watch was a Nintendo x Level 5 venture but I guess Level 5 actually owned the IP? I know the game had a rough launch on the switch for some reason. Hope it wasn’t gameplay related

The gameplay in 4 is basically just Ni No Kuni. Although I feel like I remember the release date for 4 being sandwiched together in the same week as Mario Maker 2, so that might have had something to do with it. I wouldn't be surprised if Level-5 moved Yo-kai Watch off of Nintendo exclusively because of the unfair treatment they've gotten. Nintendo had a hand to play in YKW's botched marketing in the West.

Well 1 is being re-released for Switch, so maybe they'll inevitably put it on PS4 as well. 1 was already on phones, so I doubt it's exclusive.
That said, 1 has a ton of problems that 2 and 3 fixed.

If you own a 3DS (preferably a hacked one) then go for it. Skip 1, play 2 Psychic Specters, and then 3. They're good games in their own respect. With that said, you don't have to at all. You can jump in at any point. They do tend to reintroduce characters for new players.

If you're referring to something like SMT where it flat out tells you the origins of a lot of the mythological creatures and whatnot, then no, it doesn't just tell you. But there are plenty of Yokai that are actually based on real life Yokai that exist. A lot of the Yokai in the Japanese versions keep their original names even.

There's more purpose in having things like tanks and healers whereas in Pokemon you can more or less get by with quick sweepers, so in that sense it can be harder in a way. You don't want to play YW without a healer on your side.
The story feels more laid back and has skippable cutscenes if you aren't feeling it
