I'll usually play on second hardest unless there's some sort of something. Played Halo 2 on Legendary back in the day but Heroic is definitely a good balance between fun, bullet sponge, and how fast you die.

Most games just make harder modes with enemies that have more HP and do more damage, turning it into an unfun slog. Void Bastards did hard modes correctly because the enemies all have the same health, but there's significantly less ammo on the harder difficulties, making for a very nice scavenger feel (which is what the game is about, being a scavenger)

Hardest is usually some meme difficulty like "Die in 1 hit". I'll play on the "intended difficulty" if the devs defined one as the intended way to play, otherwise I find that second hardest offers the best balance. If I really like a game I'll try to finish it on hardest at least once.
