It's so odd how the story is actually kind of dark and depresing but the gameplay is so disconnected from it no one really cares.

I haven't read the full summary in a while so I'll give you what comes from the top of my head.
>It's the future and basically everything is under control of the Regular army
>Morden is a high ranking general leading a huge portion of the army
>His son gets murdered pointlessly and no one in the army gave a fuck
>Morden gets beyond mad and rebels along with his forces
>The Regular army continues giving no fucks despite the fact that they are giving constant warnings that Morden is up to some shit
>To the surprise of nobody, Morden attacks and manages to take control of most of the world
>The Regular army is in deep shit now, with literally their only hope being some dude and his best friend who are volunteering to fight Morden's forces by themselves
>By some miracle, they win and Morden is driven back
>Regular army takes all the credit and threatens Marco and Tarma to stay in service in case shit comes up again, despite both of them wanting to retire
>Morden returns with aliens this time, Regular Army knows that they can't trust Marco and Tarma to actually fight them so they send Fio and Eri to spy on them and kill them if necessary

>You kill their leader (but it was a ruse again), You rescue your comrade and then you have one last fight against the real deal, Rootmars
>You kill him finally, and land safely on earth
>Morden and some of his soldiers celebrate the victory, but the Marco & his pals are so disgusted about what war brings to the world they drop their weapons to the bottom of the sea
